Such networks have become important research subjects in the field of informatics engineering due to the recent popularity of smart phones. User provided networks are independent from traditional Internet service providers. Communication and information exchange between users occurs opportunistically, i.e., when the smart phones are close enough to exchange information. Most user provided networks are based on the radio standard IEEE 802.11, popularly known as 'wi-fi'. However, some networks are based on other low range radio standards, such as Bluetooth and IEEE 802.15.4.
User provided networks are important to the society in general when the traditional Internet service providers become unavailable. For example, this may occur in terrorist attacks, earthquakes, or even cyber attacks. In these emergency situations, when users have a greater interest in common, an efficient system for non-presencial information exchange is necessary. Such networks are also interesting in a social context, when users must be incentivized to share their resources (storage capacity, wireless connectivity and battery) to enable the exchange of information. This doctoral thesis addresses both situations: i) networks whose users have a common interest and ii) networks whose users need to be encouraged to share resources.
Among the various contributions of this doctoral thesis are the Delay Tolerant Reinforcement-Based routing solution and the Messages on oFfer incentive mechanism. The first is a routing solution for users-provided networks when the users have a prior interest in common. The second is an incentive mechanism to encourage users to exchange information. Both solutions showed excellent results in the simulation environment.Esta tese de doutoramento investiga as redes providas pelos usuários. Com a popularização do telemóvel esperto (smart phone) tais redes se tornaram objeto de pesquisa na área de engenharia informática. Uma característica básica das redes providas pelo usuário é a sua independência em relação aos provedores de serviço tradicionais. A comunicação e troca de informação entre usuários ocorre de forma oportuna, isto é, quando os telemóveis estão próximos o suficiente para se comunicarem. A maioria das redes providas por usuários é baseada no padrão de rádio IEEE 802.11, popularmente conhecido como 'wi-fi'. No entanto, algumas redes se baseiam em outros padrões de baixo alcance, por exemplo Bluetooth e IEEE 802.15.4.
As redes providas por usuários são importantes para a sociedade no advento dos provedores de serviço tradicionais ficarem indisponíveis. Por exemplo, isso pode ocorrer em ataques terroristas, terremotos, ou mesmo em ataques virtuais. Nessas situações de emergência, quando os usuários têm um interesse maior em comum, é necessário um sistema de troca de mensagens não presencial eficiente. Tais redes também são importantes em um contexto social, quando os usuários precisam ser incentivados a compartilhar os seus recursos (capacidade de armazenamento, conectividade sem-fio e bateria) para que ocorra troca de informação. Essa tese de doutoramento aborda ambas as situações: i) redes cujos usuários têm um interesse em comum e ii) redes cujos usuários precisam ser incentivados a compartilhar recursos.
Dentro das diversas contribuições que esta tese de doutoramento apresenta estão a solução de roteamento Delay Tolerant Reinforcement-Based e o mecanismo de incentivo Messages on oFfer. A primeira é uma solução de encaminhamento para redes providas por usuários que tenham um interesse em comum prévio. A segunda é um mecanismo de incentivo para estimular que os usuários troquem informação quando não houver o interesse em comum. More than a century of bathymetric observations and present-day shallow sediment characterization in Belfast Bay, Maine, USA: implications for pockmark field longevity

pockmark formation and maintenance remain uncertain,
especially in areas lacking extensive thermogenic fluid
deposits (e.g., previously glaciated estuaries). This study
characterizes seafloor activity in the Belfast Bay, Maine
nearshore pockmark field using (1) three swath bathymetry
datasets collected between 1999 and 2008, complemented
by analyses of shallow box-core samples for radionuclide
activity and undrained shear strength, and (2) historical
bathymetric data (report and smooth sheets from 1872,
1947, 1948). In addition, because repeat swath bathymetry
surveys are an emerging data source, we present a selected
literature review of recent studies using such datasets for
seafloor change analysis. This study is the first to apply the
method to a pockmark field, and characterizes macro-scale
(>5 m) evolution of tens of square kilometers of highly
irregular seafloor. Presence/absence analysis yielded no
change in pockmark frequency or distribution over a 9-year
period (1999–2008). In that time pockmarks did not
detectably enlarge, truncate, elongate, or combine. Historical
data indicate that pockmark chains already existed in
the 19th century. Despite the lack of macroscopic changes
in the field, near-bed undrained shear-strength values of
less than 7 kPa and scattered downcore 137Cs signatures
indicate a highly disturbed setting. Integrating these
findings with independent geophysical and geochemical
observations made in the pockmark field, it can be
concluded that (1) large-scale sediment resuspension and
dispersion related to pockmark formation and failure do not
occur frequently within this field, and (2) pockmarks can
persevere in a dynamic estuarine setting that exhibits
minimal modern fluid venting. Although pockmarks are
conventionally thought to be long-lived features maintained
by a combination of fluid venting and minimal sediment
accumulation, this suggests that other mechanisms may be
equally active in maintaining such irregular seafloor
morphology. One such mechanism could be upwelling

The Impact of Global Warming and Anoxia on Marine Benthic Community Dynamics: an Example from the Toarcian (Early Jurassic)
The Pliensbachian-Toarcian (Early Jurassic) fossil record is an archive of natural data of benthic community response to global warming and marine long-term hypoxia and anoxia. In the early Toarcian mean temperatures increased by the same order of magnitude as that predicted for the near future; laminated, organic-rich, black shales were deposited in many shallow water epicontinental basins; and a biotic crisis occurred in the marine realm, with the extinction of approximately 5% of families and 26% of genera. High-resolution quantitative abundance data of benthic invertebrates were collected from the Cleveland Basin (North Yorkshire, UK), and analysed with multivariate statistical methods to detect how the fauna responded to environmental changes during the early Toarcian. Twelve biofacies were identified. Their changes through time closely resemble the pattern of faunal degradation and recovery observed in modern habitats affected by anoxia. All four successional stages of community structure recorded in modern studies are recognised in the fossil data (i.e. Stage III: climax; II: transitional; I: pioneer; 0: highly disturbed). Two main faunal turnover events occurred: (i) at the onset of anoxia, with the extinction of most benthic species and the survival of a few adapted to thrive in low-oxygen conditions (Stages I to 0) and (ii) in the recovery, when newly evolved species colonized the re-oxygenated soft sediments and the path of recovery did not retrace of pattern of ecological degradation (Stages I to II). The ordination of samples coupled with sedimentological and palaeotemperature proxy data indicate that the onset of anoxia and the extinction horizon coincide with both a rise in temperature and sea level. Our study of how faunal associations co-vary with long and short term sea level and temperature changes has implications for predicting the long-term effects of “dead zones” in modern oceans
A survey of transcutaneous blood gas monitoring among European neonatal intensive care units
BACKGROUND: PCO(2 )and PO(2 )are important monitoring parameters in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Compared to conventional blood gas measurements that cause significant blood loss in preterms, transcutaneous (tc) measurements allow continuous, non-invasive monitoring of blood gas levels. The aim of the study was to survey the usage and opinions among German speaking NICUs concerning tc blood gas monitoring. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed and sent to 56 head nurses of different NICUs in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. RESULTS: A completely answered questionnaire was obtained from 41 NICUs. In two of these units tc measurements are not performed. In most NICUs (77%), both P(tc)O(2 )and P(tc)CO(2 )are measured simultaneously. Most units change the sensors every 3 hours; however, the recommended temperature of 44°C is used in only 15% of units. In only 8% of units are arterial blood gases obtained to validate tc values. Large variations were found concerning the targeted level of oxygen saturation [median upper limit: 95% (range 80–100%); median lower limit: 86% (range 75–93%)] and PO(2 )[median upper limit: 70 mmHg (range 45–90 mmHg); median lower limit: 44 mmHg (range 30–60 mmHg)]. CONCLUSION: Our survey shows that the use of tc monitors remains widespread among German speaking NICUs, despite earlier data suggesting that their use had been abandoned in many NICUs worldwide. In addition, we suggest that the current method of monitoring oxygenation may not prevent hyperoxemia in preterm infants
Triple Combination Antiviral Drug (TCAD) Composed of Amantadine, Oseltamivir, and Ribavirin Impedes the Selection of Drug-Resistant Influenza A Virus
Widespread resistance among circulating influenza A strains to at least one of the anti-influenza drugs is a major public health concern. A triple combination antiviral drug (TCAD) regimen comprised of amantadine, oseltamivir, and ribavirin has been shown to have synergistic and broad spectrum activity against influenza A strains, including drug resistant strains. Here, we used mathematical modeling along with three different experimental approaches to understand the effects of single agents, double combinations, and the TCAD regimen on resistance in influenza in vitro, including: 1) serial passage at constant drug concentrations, 2) serial passage at escalating drug concentrations, and 3) evaluation of the contribution of each component of the TCAD regimen to the suppression of resistance. Consistent with the modeling which demonstrated that three drugs were required to suppress the emergence of resistance in influenza A, treatment with the TCAD regimen resulted in the sustained suppression of drug resistant viruses, whereas treatment with amantadine alone or the amantadine-oseltamivir double combination led to the rapid selection of resistant variants which comprised ∼100% of the population. Furthermore, the TCAD regimen imposed a high genetic barrier to resistance, requiring multiple mutations in order to escape the effects of all the drugs in the regimen. Finally, we demonstrate that each drug in the TCAD regimen made a significant contribution to the suppression of virus breakthrough and resistance at clinically achievable concentrations. Taken together, these data demonstrate that the TCAD regimen was superior to double combinations and single agents at suppressing resistance, and that three drugs at a minimum were required to impede the selection of drug resistant variants in influenza A virus. The use of mathematical modeling with multiple experimental designs and molecular readouts to evaluate and optimize combination drug regimens for the suppression of resistance may be broadly applicable to other infectious diseases
Intravital Two-Photon Microscopy of Immune Cell Dynamics in Corneal Lymphatic Vessels
BACKGROUND: The role of lymphatic vessels in tissue and organ transplantation as well as in tumor growth and metastasis has drawn great attention in recent years. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We now developed a novel method using non-invasive two-photon microscopy to simultaneously visualize and track specifically stained lymphatic vessels and autofluorescent adjacent tissues such as collagen fibrils, blood vessels and immune cells in the mouse model of corneal neovascularization in vivo. The mouse cornea serves as an ideal tissue for this technique due to its easy accessibility and its inducible and modifiable state of pathological hem- and lymphvascularization. Neovascularization was induced by suture placement in corneas of Balb/C mice. Two weeks after treatment, lymphatic vessels were stained intravital by intrastromal injection of a fluorescently labeled LYVE-1 antibody and the corneas were evaluated in vivo by two-photon microscopy (TPM). Intravital TPM was performed at 710 nm and 826 nm excitation wavelengths to detect immunofluorescence and tissue autofluorescence using a custom made animal holder. Corneas were then harvested, fixed and analyzed by histology. Time lapse imaging demonstrated the first in vivo evidence of immune cell migration into lymphatic vessels and luminal transport of individual cells. Cells immigrated within 1-5.5 min into the vessel lumen. Mean velocities of intrastromal corneal immune cells were around 9 µm/min and therefore comparable to those of T-cells and macrophages in other mucosal surfaces. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge we here demonstrate for the first time the intravital real-time transmigration of immune cells into lymphatic vessels. Overall this study demonstrates the valuable use of intravital autofluorescence two-photon microscopy in the model of suture-induced corneal vascularizations to study interactions of immune and subsequently tumor cells with lymphatic vessels under close as possible physiological conditions
Uncertainties in Simulating Crop Performance in Degraded Soils and Low Input Production Systems
Many factors interact to determine crop production. Cropping systems have evolved or been developed to achieve high yields, relying on practices that eliminate or minimize yield reducing factors. However, this is not entirely the case in many developing countries where subsistence farming is common. The soils in these countries are mainly coarse-textured, have low water holding capacity, and are low in fertility or fertility declines rapidly with time. Apart from poor soils, there is considerable annual variability in climate, and weeds, insects and diseases may damage the crop considerably. In such conditions, the gap between actual and potential yield is very large. These complexities make it difficult to use cropping system models, due not only to the many inputs needed for factors that may interact to reduce yield, but also to the uncertainty in measuring or estimating those inputs. To determine which input uncertainties (weather, crop or soil) dominate model output, we conducted a global sensitivity analysis using the DSSAT cropping system model in three contrasting production situations, varying in environments and management conditions from irrigated high nutrient inputs (Florida, USA) to rainfed crops with manure application (Damari, Niger) or with no nutrient inputs (Wa, Ghana). Sensitivities to uncertainties in cultivar parameters accounted for about 90% of yield variability under the intensive management system in Florida, whereas soil water and nutrient parameters dominated uncertainties in simulated yields in Niger and Ghana, respectively. Results showed that yield sensitivities to soil parameters dominated those for cultivar parameters in degraded soils and low input cropping systems. These results provide strong evidence that cropping system models can be used for studying crop performance under a wide range of conditions. But our results also show that the use of models under low-input, degraded soil conditions requires accurate determination of soil parameters for reliable yield predictions
Teosinte Inflorescence Phytolith Assemblages Mirror Zea Taxonomy
Molecular DNA analyses of the New World grass (Poaceae) genus Zea, comprising five species, has resolved taxonomic issues including the most likely teosinte progenitor (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis) of maize (Zea mays ssp. mays). However, archaeologically, little is known about the use of teosinte by humans both prior to and after the domestication of maize. One potential line of evidence to explore these relationships is opaline phytoliths produced in teosinte fruit cases. Here we use multidimensional scaling and multiple discriminant analyses to determine if rondel phytolith assemblages from teosinte fruitcases reflect teosinte taxonomy. Our results indicate that rondel phytolith assemblages from the various taxa, including subspecies, can be statistically discriminated. This indicates that it will be possible to investigate the archaeological histories of teosinte use pending the recovery of appropriate samples
