    Enhancing Students’ Science Achievement through Jigsaw II Strategy

    The Science education curriculum in the Philippines has shifted from inputs-based to outcomes-based education putting the learners at the core of the instruction. Hence, educators continue to innovate ways on how to engage the learners into a relevant and responsive science instruction. Further, the implementation of the K to 12 curriculum brings a paradigm shift in education in terms of pedagogy, assessment and outcomes. This within group quasi-experimental research attempts to test the effects of Jigsaw II strategy on the students’ science achievement. A total of 51 Grade 9 students in a government-run secondary school in Zambales, Philippines participated in the study. Results revealed that the class improved from “approaching proficiency” to “proficient” level in their science achievement after the implementation of the strategy. It was found out that Jigsaw II strategy had a significant effect on the science achievement of the learners. The study recommends the use of the instructional strategy in enhancing students’ achievement. The strategy may be applied in other science topics to further see its effectiveness. This paper likewise contributes to the literature on the effectiveness of Jigsaw II learning strategy in the science teaching in the Philippine context. 

    Single step joint: overview of European standardized approaches and experimentations

    In the field of the built heritage restoration, engineers have to work with old structures made of badly preserved timber elements. The assessment of timber elements and connections is a major issue for engineers involved in a restoration project. Before thinking about any intervention technics, engineers have to properly understand how the carpentry connections fail, which parameters influence the failure modes (geometry of the joint, mechanical properties of the wood,…) and how the internal forces are distributed into the joint to finally figure out how to design the traditional carpentry connections. The present paper aims to raise those questions focusing on the Single Step Joint design. Even if this common joint between the rafter and the tie beam is geometrically simple, one may pick up three geometrical configurations of Simple Notched Joints from the past till today: the geometrical configuration ideal (GCID), the geometrical configuration perpendicular to the tie beam (GCPTB) and the geometrical configuration perpendicular to the rafter (GCPR). The first one is more recent because it requires a highest accuracy production, and so the use of the new technologies (e.g., CNC). For each one, some general design rules about the geometrical parameters of the Single Step Joint are defined by some European standards (Siem and Jorissen, 2015), but no one details how to design this connection to prevent shear cracks at the heel depth or the compressive crushing at the joint contact surfaces. Hence the design rules and the emergence of failure modes according to the geometrical parameters of the Simple Notched Joint must be defined. In order to check the design equations and the failure modes, lab tests about the three geometrical configurations of the Single Step Joint have been carried out, varying the heel depth, the shear length and the inclination of the rafter

    The role of servant leadership in creating a positive school climate

    This study investigates the role of servant leadership in creating a positive school climate. A quantitative research design was used to examine the relationship between servant leadership and school climate, including the effects of servant leadership on student academic achievement, teacher job satisfaction, and school culture. The study was conducted in several schools in a particular district, and data were collected using a survey questionnaire from 40 teachers and 1000 students. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings suggest that there is a significant positive correlation between servant leadership and teacher job satisfaction (r = 0.55, p < 0.01), school culture (r = 0.62, p < 0.01), and academic achievement (r = 0.45, p < 0.01). The results indicate that servant leadership practices contribute to the development of a positive school climate. The study provides support for the notion that servant leadership is a viable leadership approach in schools that can contribute to the development of a positive school climate. The results suggest that schools should consider implementing servant leadership practices as a way of improving teacher job satisfaction and school culture. By prioritizing the needs of their followers and creating a supportive environment, servant leaders can contribute to the development of a positive school culture that fosters growth and development for teachers and students alike. However, the study had several limitations, including the limited sample size and the reliance on self-reported data. Future research should aim to address these limitations by conducting longitudinal studies with larger and more diverse samples. Overall, this study highlights the importance of servant leadership in creating a positive school climate, and provides important insights for school leaders and policymakers seeking to improve the quality of education in their schools

    WHO systematic review of maternal mortality and morbidity: methodological issues and challenges

    BACKGROUND: Reducing maternal mortality and morbidity are among the key international development goals. A prerequisite for monitoring the progress towards attainment of these goals is accurate assessment of the levels of mortality and morbidity. In order to contribute to mapping the global burden of reproductive ill-health, we are conducting a systematic review of incidence and prevalence of maternal mortality and morbidity. METHODS: We followed the standard methodology for systematic reviews. We prepared a protocol and a form for data extraction that identify key characteristics on study and reporting quality. An extensive search was conducted for the years 1997–2002 including electronic and hand searching. RESULTS: We screened the titles and abstracts of about 65,000 citations identified through 11 electronic databases as well as various other sources. Four thousand six hundred and twenty-six full-text reports were critically appraised and 2443 are included in the review so far. Approximately one third of the studies were conducted in Asia and Africa. The reporting quality was generally low with definitions for conditions and the diagnostic methods often not reported. CONCLUSIONS: There are unique challenges and issues regarding the search, critical appraisal and summarizing epidemiological data in this systematic review of prevalence/incidence studies. More methodological studies and discussion to advance the field will be useful. Considerable efforts including leadership, consensus building and resources are required to improve the standards of monitoring burden of disease

    How Mistimed and Unwanted Pregnancies Affect Timing of Antenatal Care Initiation in three Districts in Tanzania

    Early antenatal care (ANC) initiation is a doorway to early detection and management of potential complications associated with pregnancy. Although the literature reports various factors associated with ANC initiation such as parity and age, pregnancy intentions is yet to be recognized as a possible predictor of timing of ANC initiation. Data originate from a cross-sectional household survey on health behaviour and service utilization patterns. The survey was conducted in 2011 in Rufiji, Kilombero and Ulanga districts in Tanzania on 910 women of reproductive age who had given birth in the past two years. ANC initiation was considered to be early only if it occurred in the first trimester of pregnancy gestation. A recently completed pregnancy was defined as mistimed if a woman wanted it later, and if she did not want it at all the pregnancy was termed as unwanted. Chisquare was used to test for associations and multinomial logistic regression was conducted to examine how mistimed and unwanted pregnancies affect timing of ANC initiation. Although 49.3% of the women intended to become pregnant, 50.7% (34.9% mistimed and 15.8% unwanted) became pregnant unintentionally. While ANC initiation in the 1st trimester was 18.5%, so was 71.7% and 9.9% in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that ANC initiation in the 2nd trimester was 1.68 (95% CI 1.10‒2.58) and 2.00 (95% CI 1.05‒3.82) times more likely for mistimed and unwanted pregnancies respectively compared to intended pregnancies. These estimates rose to 2.81 (95% CI 1.41‒5.59) and 4.10 (95% CI 1.68‒10.00) respectively in the 3rd trimester. We controlled for gravidity, age, education, household wealth, marital status, religion, district of residence and travel time to a health facility. Late ANC initiation is a significant maternal and child health consequence of mistimed and unwanted pregnancies in Tanzania. Women should be empowered to delay or avoid pregnancies whenever they need to do so. Appropriate counseling to women, especially those who happen to conceive unintentionally is needed to minimize the possibility of delaying ANC initiation.\u

    The development and application of a new tool to assess the adequacy of the content and timing of antenatal care

    Abstract Background: Current measures of antenatal care use are limited to initiation of care and number of visits. This study aimed to describe the development and application of a tool to assess the adequacy of the content and timing of antenatal care. Methods: The Content and Timing of care in Pregnancy (CTP) tool was developed based on clinical relevance for ongoing antenatal care and recommendations in national and international guidelines. The tool reflects minimal care recommended in every pregnancy, regardless of parity or risk status. CTP measures timing of initiation of care, content of care (number of blood pressure readings, blood tests and ultrasound scans) and whether the interventions were received at an appropriate time. Antenatal care trajectories for 333 pregnant women were then described using a standard tool (the APNCU index), that measures the quantity of care only, and the new CTP tool. Both tools categorise care into 4 categories, from ‘Inadequate’ (both tools) to ‘Adequate plus’ (APNCU) or ‘Appropriate’ (CTP). Participants recorded the timing and content of their antenatal care prospectively using diaries. Analysis included an examination of similarities and differences in categorisation of care episodes between the tools. Results: According to the CTP tool, the care trajectory of 10,2% of the women was classified as inadequate, 8,4% as intermediate, 36% as sufficient and 45,3% as appropriate. The assessment of quality of care differed significantly between the two tools. Seventeen care trajectories classified as ‘Adequate’ or ‘Adequate plus’ by the APNCU were deemed ‘Inadequate’ by the CTP. This suggests that, despite a high number of visits, these women did not receive the minimal recommended content and timing of care. Conclusions: The CTP tool provides a more detailed assessment of the adequacy of antenatal care than the current standard index. However, guidelines for the content of antenatal care vary, and the tool does not at the moment grade over-use of interventions as ‘Inappropriate’. Further work needs to be done to refine the content items prior to larger scale testing of the impact of the new measure
