    The role of complex cues in social and reproductive plasticity

    Phenotypic plasticity can be a key determinant of fitness. The degree to which the expression of plasticity is adaptive relies upon the accuracy with which information about the state of the environment is integrated. This step might be particularly beneficial when environments, e.g. the social and sexual context, change rapidly. Fluctuating temporal dynamics could increase the difficulty of determining the appropriate level of expression of a plastic response. In this review, we suggest that new insights into plastic responses to the social and sexual environment (social and reproductive plasticity) may be gained by examining the role of complex cues (those comprising multiple, distinct sensory components). Such cues can enable individuals to more accurately monitor their environment in order to respond adaptively to it across the whole life course. We briefly review the hypotheses for the evolution of complex cues and then adapt these ideas to the context of social and sexual plasticity. We propose that the ability to perceive complex cues can facilitate plasticity, increase the associated fitness benefits and decrease the risk of costly ‘mismatches’ between phenotype and environment by (i) increasing the robustness of information gained from highly variable environments, (ii) fine-tuning responses by using multiple strands of information and (iii) reducing time lags in adaptive responses. We conclude by outlining areas for future research that will help to determine the interplay between complex cues and plasticity

    Hierarchical organization of perylene bisimides and polyoxometalates for photo-assisted water oxidation

    The oxygen in Earth\u2019s atmosphere is there primarily because of water oxidation performed by photosynthetic organisms using solar light and one specialized protein complex, photosystem II (PSII). High-resolution imaging of the PSII \u2018core\u2019 complex shows the ideal co-localization of multi-chromophore light-harvesting antennas with the functional reaction centre. Man-made systems are still far from replicating the complexity of PSII, as the majority of PSII mimetics have been limited to photocatalytic dyads based on a 1:1 ratio of a light absorber, generally a Ru\u2013polypyridine complex, with a water oxidation catalyst. Here we report the self-assembly of multi-perylene-bisimide chromophores (PBI) shaped to function by interaction with a polyoxometalate water-oxidation catalyst (Ru4POM). The resulting [PBI]5Ru4POM complex shows a robust amphiphilic structure and dynamic aggregation into large two-dimensional paracrystalline domains, a redshifted light-harvesting efficiency of >40% and favourable exciton accumulation, with a peak quantum efficiency using \u2018green\u2019 photons (\u3bb > 500 nm). The modularity of the building blocks and the simplicity of the non-covalent chemistry offer opportunities for innovation in artificial photosynthesis

    Sacrificial Oxidants as a Means to Study the Catalytic Activity of Water Oxidation Catalysts

    An overview of the different sacrificial oxidants used in literature is reported, paying particular attention to the “sacrificial pair”, a photosystem made of a Ru-dye (Tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) dichloride, working as “antenna” for visible light) and a final electron acceptor (i.e. the persulfate ion). Such sacrificial oxidant is one of the most common in the literature and it was used in all the experiments described in Chap. 4. Different configurations of batch reactors can be used in the sacrificial-oxidant-driven water oxidation (WO) reaction, and three of them (i.e. the Clark-electrode Cell, the Stripping Flow Reactor and the Bubbling Reactor) are described in detail. The effects of both mass transfer limitations and side reactions on the determination of the two parameters describing the activity of water oxidation catalysts (i.e. the O2 production rate and the total evolved O2) are discussed, evidencing how such undesired phenomena occur to a different extent with the three reactor configurations
