Strategies Small Business Owners Use for Long-Term Existence

More than 90 of every 100 new businesses fail within 5 years. The need to explore ongoing strategies that provide low-cost alternatives can prove invaluable to cash-strapped new business owners. Exploration of relationships among a group of stakeholders essential to business success provided data in this case study. Those stakeholders include the owner, the customer service personnel and the consumer. Without the consumer, all other business activities would cease to be necessary. Five business owners and five employees from Redding, California participated in 2 separate focus group interviews. The conceptual framework for this case study was to explore the specific business problem, the lack of low-cost strategic resources, and initiatives to facilitate continued existence of new small businesses. The focus group interviews were conducted in 2 separate settings using notes and Audacity voice recordings. Through personal notes and the use of NVivo 11 data was disseminated and provided rich information on at least four themes. Major themes were customer retention, creating teamwork, building relationships, and communication to create business sustainability. Having communities in which businesses thrive allows for greater job opportunities and increased community revenue. The impact of empty storefronts in cities throughout America and the loss of community identity necessitate the need for the strategist to continue to attempt to provide resources and strategies to business owners everywhere. The social change impact occurs when SBOs who recognize their business provides structure to the community seek out ways to increase sustainability

\u27Bootstraps\u27 or \u27Helping Hand:\u27 An Exploration of the Relationship Between Economic Stratification Among Black Americans and Their Racial Attitudes Toward Merit-Based Opportunities and Affirmative Action

Over the last thirty years, much has been written about the increasing disparity between Black Americans who have achieved upward mobility and those at the lower end of the economic spectrum. This dissertation utilizes the General Social Survey (GSS) to contribute to this dialogue on stratification within the Black American community. More specifically, it asks the questions: from 1994-2006 - during the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush administrations - how did socioeconomic status affect Blacks\u27 racial attitudes about themselves? To answer this question, the racial attitudes of a sample of Black Americans of low socioeconomic status will be compared to the racial attitudes of their higher socioeconomic status counterparts across several demographic, attitudinal, and economic variables. The theoretic framework for this investigation includes stratification theory (Weber), group interest theory (Dawson, Shelton & Wilson), and the theory of opportunities and group consciousness (Chong & Kim)

The Effects of Testosterone Propionate on the Testes, Seminal Vesicles and Prostate of Intact and Castrate Rats

Much work has been done upon the response of immature rats\u27 testes and accessories to male hormones. The treatments in general have been over a long period of time. In this research, the effects of testosterone propionate on the testes and accessories were observed after injection of testosterone propionate for a period of 14 days. The objectives being: I. To study the normal condition of the testes and accessory sex organs of the rat which may be compared with modifications of these organs in experimental animals. II. To observe the responses that the male testes and accessories make after the injection of testosterone propionate into 22 days of age rats for a period of 14 days. III. To determine if the effects of testosterone propionate are parallel to the effects of the male hormone secreted by the testes. IV. To show how castration affect the accessory sex organs, and find out if testosterone propionate injection will prevent the appearance of castrate characteristics

An Examination of the Negotiability Concept of the Uniform Commercial Code

The aim of this undertaking is to examine the impact, if any, that the new Uniform Commercial Code may have on our concept of negotiability as it has evolved to the present time. Analysis will be confined to this one broad topic, but our considerations are not limited to one section of the Code. Although analytical thought about the negotiability concept has been applied to its many segments, which we call rules, apparently nothing has been written on the Code that has emphasized the expansion of the concept itself which is now possible. The inspiration for this article stems from the ostensibly innocent words “within this article” found in Section 3-104 of the Uniform Commercial Code. It is contended that these words could completely change the historical policy of the courts and launch us into an entirely new era for the negotiability concept. A full understanding of this position can only be gained by an inquiry into the historical development of negotiability

Image-based Quantification of 3D Morphology for Bifurcations in the Left Coronary Artery: Application to Stent Design

Background Improved strategies for stent‐based treatment of coronary artery disease at bifurcations require a greater understanding of artery morphology. Objective We developed a workflow to quantify morphology in the left main coronary (LMCA), left anterior descending (LAD), and left circumflex (LCX) artery bifurcations. Methods Computational models of each bifurcation were created for 55 patients using computed tomography images in 3D segmentation software. Metrics including cross‐sectional area, length, eccentricity, taper, curvature, planarity, branching law parameters, and bifurcation angles were assessed using open‐sources software and custom applications. Geometric characterization was performed by comparison of means, correlation, and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Results Differences between metrics suggest dedicated or multistent approaches should be tailored for each bifurcation. For example, the side branch of the LCX (i.e., obtuse marginal; OM) was longer than that of the LMCA (i.e., LCXprox) and LAD (i.e., first diagonal; D1). Bifurcation metrics for some locations (e.g., LMCA Finet ratio) provide results and confidence intervals agreeing with prior findings, while revised metric values are presented for others (e.g., LAD and LCX). LDA revealed several metrics that differentiate between artery locations (e.g., LMCA vs. D1, LMCA vs. OM, LADprox vs. D1, and LCXprox vs. D1). Conclusions These results provide a foundation for elucidating common parameters from healthy coronary arteries and could be leveraged in the future for treating diseased arteries. Collectively the current results may ultimately be used for design iterations that improve outcomes following implantation of future dedicated bifurcation stents
