    Interrelationships among Language Skills, Externalizing Behavior, and Academic Fluency and Their Impact on the Academic Skills of Students with ED

    There is growing interest in understanding the factors that influence the academic achievement of students with emotional disturbance (ED). Structural equation modeling was used to test the interrelationships among language skills, externalizing behavior, and academic fluency and their impact on the academic skills of students with ED. Results showed that language skills exerted a significant proximal effect and distal effect on academic skills. The effect of language skills was mediated through academic fluency (path coefficient = .389) but also had a proximal effect on academic skills (path coefficient = .359). However, externalizing behavior failed to have a statistically significant effect on language skills, academic fluency, or academic skills. Overall, fit indices suggested a marginally acceptable fit of the data. Results and implications are discussed

    Myosin IIA-mediated forces regulate multicellular integrity during vascular sprouting

    Angiogenic sprouting is a critical process involved in vascular network formation within tissues. During sprouting, tip cells and ensuing stalk cells migrate collectively into the extracellular matrix while preserving cell-cell junctions, forming patent structures that support blood flow. Although several signaling pathways have been identified as controlling sprouting, it remains unclear to what extent this process is mechanoregulated. To address this question, we investigated the role of cellular contractility in sprout morphogenesis, using a biomimetic model of angiogenesis. Three-dimensional maps of mechanical deformations generated by sprouts revealed that mainly leader cells, not stalk cells, exert contractile forces on the surrounding matrix. Surprisingly, inhibiting cellular contractility with blebbistatin did not affect the extent of cellular invasion but resulted in cell-cell dissociation primarily between tip and stalk cells. Closer examination of cell-cell junctions revealed that blebbistatin impaired adherens-junction organization, particularly between tip and stalk cells. Using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing, we further identified NMIIA as the major isoform responsible for regulating multicellularity and cell contractility during sprouting. Together, these studies reveal a critical role for NMIIA-mediated contractile forces in maintaining multicellularity during sprouting and highlight the central role of forces in regulating cell-cell adhesions during collective motility.R01 EB000262 - NIBIB NIH HHS; R01 HL115553 - NHLBI NIH HHSPublished versio

    Diminished Chondrogenesis and Enhanced Osteoclastogenesis in Leptin-Deficient Diabetic Mice (ob/ob) Impair Pathologic, Trauma-Induced Heterotopic Ossification

    Diabetic trauma patients exhibit delayed postsurgical wound, bony healing, and dysregulated bone development. However, the impact of diabetes on the pathologic development of ectopic bone or heterotopic ossification (HO) following trauma is unknown. In this study, we use leptin-deficient mice as a model for type 2 diabetes to understand how post-traumatic HO development may be affected by this disease process. Male leptin-deficient (ob/ob) or wild-type (C57BL/6 background) mice aged 6?8 weeks underwent 30% total body surface area burn injury with left hind limb Achilles tenotomy.     Cadherin–catenin expression in primary colorectal cancer: a survival analysis

    Both cell adhesion and cell signalling events are mediated by components of the cadherin-catenin complex. Loss of expression of the components of this complex have been shown to correlate with invasive behaviour in many tumour types although their exact role in colorectal cancer remains unclear. Immunohistochemical analysis of the expression of components of the cadherin-catenin complex in colorectal cancers from 60 patients was undertaken. Loss of memberanous expression of E-cadherin, alpha-catenin and beta-catenin was demonstrated in 52%, 85% and 40% of tumours respectively. Focal nuclear expression of beta-catenin ( 75% of tumour cells per section) was seen in 11 (18%) tumours. Loss of membranous alpha-catenin expression significantly correlated with tumour de-differentiation (P = 0.009). There was a trend towards an association between advanced tumour stage and loss of membranous expression of alpha-catenin or beta-catenin, although these associations were not statistically significant. Univariate analysis revealed that advanced Dukes' stage, tumour de-differentiation, loss of membranous beta-catenin expression, cytoplasmic beta-catenin expression and widespread nuclear expression of beta-catenin all correlated with short survival following apparently curative resection of the primary tumour. However, only Dukes' stage (P = 0.002), tumour grade (P = 0.02) and widespread nuclear expression of beta-catenin (P = 0.002) were independent predictors of short survival. Disturbed growth signalling events in colorectal tumours are thought to result in nuclear accumulation of beta-catenin. Consequently, tumours with widespread nuclear expression of beta-catenin are likely to have severely abnormal growth characteristics, and which therefore might be predictive of short survival in these patients

    Prices, Output and Hours: An Empirical Analysis Based on a Sticky Price Model

    I show that a simple sticky price model based on Rotemberg (1982) is consistent with a variety of facts concerning the correlation of prices, hours and output. In particular, I show that it is consistent with a negative correlation between the detrended levels of output and prices when the Beveridge-Nelson method is used to detrend both the price and output data. Such a correlation, i.e., a negative correlation between the predictable movements in output and the predictable movements in prices is present (and very strong) in U.S. data. Consistent with the model, this correlation is stronger than correlations between prices and hours of work. I also study the size of the predictable price movements that are associated with predictable output movements as well as the degree to which there are predictable movements in monetary aggregates associated with predictable movements in output. These facts are used to shed light on the degree to which the Federal Reserve has pursued a policy designed to stabilize expected inflation.
