Mixing fuel particles for space combustion research using acoustics

    Get PDF
Part of the microgravity science to be conducted aboard the Shuttle (STS) involves combustion using solids, particles, and liquid droplets. The central experimental facts needed for characterization of premixed quiescent particle cloud flames cannot be adequately established by normal gravity studies alone. The experimental results to date of acoustically mixing a prototypical particulate, lycopodium, in a 5 cm diameter by 75 cm long flame tube aboard a Learjet aircraft flying a 20 sec low gravity trajectory are described. Photographic and light detector instrumentation combine to measure and characterize particle cloud uniformity

Set Systems Containing Many Maximal Chains

The purpose of this short problem paper is to raise an extremal question on set systems which seems to be natural and appealing. Our question is: which set systems of a given size maximise the number of (n+1)(n+1)-element chains in the power set P({1,2,…,n})\mathcal{P}(\{1,2,\dots,n\})? We will show that for each fixed α>0\alpha>0 there is a family of α2n\alpha 2^n sets containing (α+o(1))n!(\alpha+o(1))n! such chains, and that this is asymptotically best possible. For smaller set systems we are unable to answer the question. We conjecture that a `tower of cubes' construction is extremal. We finish by mentioning briefly a connection to an extremal problem on posets and a variant of our question for the grid graph.Comment: 5 page

Early and late complications of bariatric operation.

    Get PDF
Weight loss surgery is one of the fastest growing segments of the surgical discipline. As with all medical procedures, postoperative complications will occur. Acute care surgeons need to be familiar with the common problems and their management. Although general surgical principles generally apply, diagnoses specific to the various bariatric operations must be considered. There are anatomic considerations which alter management priorities and options for these patients in many instances. These problems present both early or late in the postoperative course. Bariatric operations, in many instances, result in permanent alteration of a patient\u27s anatomy, which can lead to complications at any time during the course of a patient\u27s life. Acute care surgeons diagnosing surgical emergencies in postbariatric operation patients must be familiar with the type of surgery performed, as well as the common postbariatric surgical emergencies. In addition, surgeons must not overlook the common causes of an acute surgical abdomen-acute appendicitis, acute diverticulitis, acute pancreatitis, and gallstone disease-for these are still among the most common etiologies of abdominal pathology in these patients

Measuring Supervisor Self-Efficacy: Development and Validation of the Psychotherapy Supervisor Self-Efficacy Scale

    Get PDF
Psychotherapy supervision is an important aspect of clinical training and professional development. Researchers have developed models of psychotherapy supervisor development, and measures for evaluating supervisor competence have also been proposed. Instruments for measuring psychotherapy supervisor self-efficacy, however, have not been developed. This study examined the literature concerning psychotherapy supervision and self-efficacy. Currently, self-efficacy has only been researched regarding counselors and counselors-in-training. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to develop a scale that measures psychotherapy supervisor self-efficacy—the Psychotherapy Supervisor Self-Efficacy Scale (PSS-ES). Specifically, this study addressed eight research hypotheses. Factor structure and internal consistency of the PSS-ES were evaluated. Group differences in PSS-ES scores regarding age and years of supervisor experience were also examined. Additionally, convergent and divergent validity were assessed through comparisons of PSS-ES scores and scales related to counselor self-efficacy (CSES), supervisory style (SSI), supervisor working alliance (SWAI), and optimism (LOT-R). The results of this study provide evidence that the PSS-ES is a valid and reliable scale measuring one factor— psychotherapy supervisor self-efficacy

High turnover in electro-oxidation of alcohols and ethers with a glassy carbon-supported phenanthroimidazole mediator.

Glassy carbon electrodes covalently modified with a phenanthroimidazole mediator promote electrochemical alcohol and ether oxidation: three orders of magnitude increase in TON, to ∼15 000 in each case, was observed compared with homogeneous mediated reactions. We propose the deactivation pathways in homogeneous solution are prevented by the immobilization: modified electrode reversibility is increased for a one-electron oxidation reaction. The modified electrodes were used to catalytically oxidize p-anisyl alcohol and 1-((benzyloxy)methyl)-4-methoxybenzene, selectively, to the corresponding benzaldehyde and benzyl ester, respectively

Dynamic induced softening in frictional granular material investigated by DEM simulation

A granular system composed of frictional glass beads is simulated using the Discrete Element Method. The inter-grain forces are based on the Hertz contact law in the normal direction with frictional tangential force. The damping due to collision is also accounted for. Systems are loaded at various stresses and their quasi-static elastic moduli are characterized. Each system is subjected to an extensive dynamic testing protocol by measuring the resonant response to a broad range of AC drive amplitudes and frequencies via a set of diagnostic strains. The system, linear at small AC drive amplitudes has resonance frequencies that shift downward (i.e., modulus softening) with increased AC drive amplitude. Detailed testing shows that the slipping contact ratio does not contribute significantly to this dynamic modulus softening, but the coordination number is strongly correlated to this reduction. This suggests that the softening arises from the extended structural change via break and remake of contacts during the rearrangement of bead positions driven by the AC amplitude.Comment: acoustics, nonlinearity, granular medi
