A design flow for performance planning : new paradigms for iteration free synthesis
In conventional design, higher levels of synthesis produce a netlist, from which layout synthesis builds a mask specification for manufacturing. Timing anal ysis is built into a feedback loop to detect timing violations which are then used to update specifications to synthesis. Such iteration is undesirable, and for very high performance designs, infeasible. The problem is likely to become much worse with future generations of technology. To achieve a non-iterative design flow, early synthesis stages should use wire planning to distribute delays over the functional elements and interconnect, and layout synthesis should use its degrees of freedom to realize those delays

Motor shaft vibrations may have a negative effect on ability to implement a stiff haptic wall
A one degree of freedom experimental test bed is used to
investigate the effects of elastic vibration in haptic devices. Strong angular vibration occurs at the motor rotor due to elastic deformation in the shaft. These vibrations occur due to large discontinuities in the virtual environment such as stiff contact which is common in haptics. Also looked at was the effect of these vibrations on stability and control. It was found that the vibrations may negatively affect the stability of the haptic device by introducing large measurement errors to the controller. The experiments investigated using different types of damping in controller feedback. Adding damping to the system whilst these elastic vibrations are present can successfully damp the system, but also tend to increase the magnitude of vibrations sometimes resulting in greater instability. Finally, a second non co-located encoder was used to try to eliminate measurement error from the system due to vibration. It was found that by simply placing the encoder closer to the link where the angle is being measured, error due to rotational flex in the shaft is eliminated. This yielded the greatest improvement in controller performance, nearly eliminating the presence of the vibrations and their effects
Combining estimates of interest in prognostic modelling studies after multiple imputation: current practice and guidelines
Background: Multiple imputation (MI) provides an effective approach to handle missing covariate
data within prognostic modelling studies, as it can properly account for the missing data
uncertainty. The multiply imputed datasets are each analysed using standard prognostic modelling
techniques to obtain the estimates of interest. The estimates from each imputed dataset are then
combined into one overall estimate and variance, incorporating both the within and between
imputation variability. Rubin's rules for combining these multiply imputed estimates are based on
asymptotic theory. The resulting combined estimates may be more accurate if the posterior
distribution of the population parameter of interest is better approximated by the normal
distribution. However, the normality assumption may not be appropriate for all the parameters of
interest when analysing prognostic modelling studies, such as predicted survival probabilities and
model performance measures.
Methods: Guidelines for combining the estimates of interest when analysing prognostic modelling
studies are provided. A literature review is performed to identify current practice for combining
such estimates in prognostic modelling studies.
Results: Methods for combining all reported estimates after MI were not well reported in the
current literature. Rubin's rules without applying any transformations were the standard approach
used, when any method was stated.
Conclusion: The proposed simple guidelines for combining estimates after MI may lead to a wider
and more appropriate use of MI in future prognostic modelling studies

Calibration Belt for Quality-of-Care Assessment Based on Dichotomous Outcomes
Prognostic models applied in medicine must be validated on independent samples,
before their use can be recommended. The assessment of calibration,
i.e., the model's ability to provide reliable
predictions, is crucial in external validation studies. Besides having several
shortcomings, statistical techniques such as the computation of the standardized
mortality ratio (SMR) and its confidence intervals, the Hosmer–Lemeshow
statistics, and the Cox calibration test, are all non-informative with respect
to calibration across risk classes. Accordingly, calibration plots reporting
expected versus observed outcomes across risk subsets have been used for many
years. Erroneously, the points in the plot (frequently representing deciles of
risk) have been connected with lines, generating false calibration curves. Here
we propose a methodology to create a confidence band for the calibration curve
based on a function that relates expected to observed probabilities across
classes of risk. The calibration belt allows the ranges of risk to be spotted
where there is a significant deviation from the ideal calibration, and the
direction of the deviation to be indicated. This method thus offers a more
analytical view in the assessment of quality of care, compared to other
approaches

Differentiating criminal networks in the illegal wildlife trade: organized, corporate and disorganized crime
Historically, the poaching of wildlife was portrayed as a small-scale local activity in which only small numbers of wildlife would be smuggled illegally by collectors or opportunists. Nowadays, this image has changed: criminal networks are believed to be highly involved in wildlife trafficking, which has become a significant area of illicit activity. Even though wildlife trafficking has become accepted as a major area of crime and an important topic and criminologists have examined a variety of illegal wildlife markets, research that specifically focusses on the involvement of different criminal networks and their specific nature is lacking. The concept of a ‘criminal network’ or ‘serious organized crime’ is amorphous – getting used interchangeably and describes all crime that is structured rather than solely reflecting crime that fits within normative definitions of ‘organized’ crime. In reality, criminal networks are diverse. As such, we propose categories of criminal networks that are evidenced in the literature and within our own fieldwork: (1) organized crime groups (2) corporate crime groups and (3) disorganized criminal networks. Whereas there are instances when these groups act alone, this article will (also) discuss the overlap and interaction that occurs between our proposed categories and discuss the complicated nature of the involved criminal networks as well as predictions as to the future of these networks
Simultaneously Hermaphroditic Shrimp Use Lipophilic Cuticular Hydrocarbons as Contact Sex Pheromones
Successful mating is essentially a consequence of making the right choices at the correct time. Animals use specific strategies to gain information about a potential mate, which is then applied to decision-making processes. Amongst the many informative signals, odor cues such as sex pheromones play important ecological roles in coordinating mating behavior, enabling mate and kin recognition, qualifying mate choice, and preventing gene exchange among individuals from different populations and species. Despite overwhelming behavioral evidence, the chemical identity of most cues used in aquatic organisms remains unknown and their impact and omnipresence have not been fully recognized. In many crustaceans, including lobsters and shrimps, reproduction happens through a cascade of events ranging from initial attraction to formation of a mating pair eventually leading to mating. We examined the hypothesis that contact pheromones on the female body surface of the hermaphroditic shrimp Lysmata boggessi are of lipophilic nature, and resemble insect cuticular hydrocarbon contact cues. Via chemical analyses and behavioural assays, we show that newly molted euhermaphrodite-phase shrimp contain a bouquet of odor compounds. Of these, (Z)-9-octadecenamide is the key odor with hexadecanamide and methyl linoleate enhancing the bioactivity of the pheromone blend. Our results show that in aquatic systems lipophilic, cuticular hydrocarbon contact sex pheromones exist; this raises questions on how hydrocarbon contact signals evolved and how widespread these are in the marine environment
Non-adherence to antipsychotic medication, relapse and rehospitalisation in recent-onset schizophrenia
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aims of this study were to describe outcome with respect to persistent psychotic symptoms, relapse of positive symptoms, hospital admissions, and application of treatment by coercion among patients with recent onset schizophrenia being adherent and non-adherent to anti-psychotic medication.</p> <p>Materials and methods</p> <p>The study included 50 patients with recent onset schizophrenia, schizoaffective or schizophreniform disorders. The patients were clinically stable at study entry and had less than 2 years duration of psychotic symptoms. Good adherence to antipsychotic medication was defined as less than one month without medication. Outcomes for poor and good adherence were compared over a 24-month follow-up period.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The Odds Ratio (OR) of having a psychotic relapse was 10.27 and the OR of being admitted to hospital was 4.00 among non-adherent patients. Use of depot-antipsychotics were associated with relapses (OR = 6.44).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Non-adherence was associated with relapse, hospital admission and having persistent psychotic symptoms. Interventions to increase adherence are needed.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Current Controlled Trials NCT00184509.
