    Longitudinal Associations between Callous-unemotional (CU) Traits and School-based Affiliative Relationships among South Korean Children.

    OBJECTIVE: Callous-unemotional traits (CU) traits are characterized by low empathy, guilt, and reduced sensitivity to others’ feelings, along with a reduced drive for social affiliation. However, little is known about the relationships between CU traits and social affiliation in the school context, or the influence of gender on these associations. This study tested reciprocal associations between CU traits and school-based affiliative relationships and explored gender as a potential moderator. METHOD: The sample included South Korean children aged 10 to 12 years (N = 218, M = 11.03, SD = .65, 52% boys). Children reported on CU traits, antisocial behavior, teacher-student relationship quality, and peer affiliation. Three-wave longitudinal cross-lagged models tested reciprocal associations between CU traits and affiliation with both teachers and peers, with multi-group modeling employed to test the moderating effect of gender. RESULT: Higher CU traits at time 1 predicted decreases in teacher affiliation at time 2 controlling for CU traits, teacher-child affiliation, and antisocial behavior at time 1, while lower teacher-child affiliation at time 2 predicted increases in CU traits at time 3 accounting for CU traits, teacher-child affiliation, and antisocial behavior at time 2. However, there were no reciprocal associations between CU traits and teacher affiliation nor significant associations between CU traits and peer affiliation. Gender did not moderate any pathways between CU traits and teacher or peer affiliation. CONCLUSIONS: Findings indicate CU traits may reduce teacher-child affiliation, potentially escalating risk for further increases in CU traits. Thus, teacher-child affiliation may represent an important target for school-based intervention for children with elevated CU traits regardless of gender

    The Influence of Antisocial Behavior and Callous-Unemotional Traits on Trajectories of School Engagement and Achievement in South-Korean Children

    Poor educational outcomes are common among children with antisocial behavior problems, including among a subgroup of antisocial children with callous-unemotional traits, who show deficits in empathy, guilt, and prosociality. However, few studies have explored the unique contributions of antisocial behavior and callous-unemotional traits to school outcomes and most prior studies have been conducted in Western countries. The current study thus tested associations between callous-unemotional traits, antisocial behavior, and trajectories of school outcomes among South Korean children. Participants aged 10-12 years (N = 218; 52% boys) completed questionnaires assessing antisocial behavior, callous-unemotional traits, verbal ability, and school engagement, and teachers provided children’s Math and Korean grades at three time points during a single academic year. Prospective associations were explored in conditional latent growth curve models. Both antisocial behavior and callous-unemotional traits were related to lower school engagement at the start of the academic year, but the magnitude of the associations was greater for callous-unemotional traits, suggesting a greater adverse effect of callous-unemotional traits on engagement than antisocial behavior. Moreover, children with high levels of callous-unemotional traits showed stable and low levels of school engagement. There were no significant predictive associations between antisocial behavior or callous-unemotional traits and trajectories of academic grades. The findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving educational outcomes among antisocial children should be tailored according to the presence of callous-unemotional traits to target the specific needs of individual students, particularly at the start of the school year

    Characterisation of transcription factors with potential roles in the circadian optimisation of Crassulacean acid metabolism in Kalanchoë fedtschenkoi.

    Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is a metabolic adaptation of photosynthesis that is optimised via strict temporal regulation of its biochemistry by the circadian oscillator. CAM plants achieve high water use efficiency and thus thrive in seasonally dry regions unsuitable for C3 food crops such as rice or wheat. Climate change and the associated challenges of global food and energy security, mean that CAM research is currently of urgent and pressing need, as CAM may reveal methods for the generation of more water use efficient crops. The efficiency of CAM is optimised by the circadian clock, through the regulation of PHOSPHOENOLPYRUVATE CARBOXYLASE KINASE (PPCK) expression and nocturnal CO2 fixation, but the signalling pathway between the central clock and CAM has yet to be elucidated. Whole genome sequencing and detailed RNA-seq datasets for C3 and CAM leaves of the model CAM species Kalanchoë fedtschenkoi have enabled the discovery of novel genes that could function to link CAM to the circadian clock. Three CAM-induced and clock-controlled transcription factor (TF) genes were identified from the RNA-seq datasets: MYB-LIKE 439 (KfMYB439), CAM-INDUCED BZIP1 (KfCIB1) and CYCLING DOF FACTOR2 (KfCDF2). Both over-expressor and RNAi knockdown transgenic lines of K. fedtschenkoi were generated for each TF, facilitating the further elucidation of their biological functions. Over 200 transgenic lines were screened for altered expression levels, and changes to the dawn and dusk levels of key CAM metabolites: malate and starch. Four transgenic lines for each TF, two over-expressor and two RNAi lines, were used for detailed phenotypic analysis of CAM-associated traits. Transgenic perturbation of any one of the three TFs caused small but widespread changes to the transcript levels of core clock- and CAM-associated genes. KfMYB439 is a REVEILLE family TF related to the clock gene CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED1 (CCA1). Data revealed that KfMYB439 functioned close to the core circadian oscillator. Mis-regulation of KfMYB439 led to the perturbation of efficient dark CO2 fixation, reduced levels of starch and malate, and reduced productivity during drought. KfCIB1, was found to feed back to influence the core circadian clock as well as regulating CAM. In constant light conditions, KfCIB1 mis-expression led to perturbed timing of KfCCA1 and TIMING OF CAB1 (KfTOC1) . KfCIB1 mis-regulation also impacted on stomatal control. At dusk and dawn, large and rapid changes in stomatal conductance resulted in spikes of CO2. Mis-expression also resulted in small improvements in productivity in water-limited environments. KfCDF2 was found to function not only in the clock control of CAM, but also in the photoperiodic control of flowering time. In terms of CAM and the clock, KfCDF2 mis-expression caused changes to CCA1, TOC1 and PPCK expression, and arrhythmic CO2 fixation in constant conditions. It also impacted on water retention during drought, with both over-expressor and RNAi lines displaying higher succulence than the wild type lines after 90 days of drought. KfCDF2 over-expression in both K. fedtschenkoi and K. laxiflora caused constitutive flowering in long days, whereas wild type plants never flowered. Q-RT-PCR analysis of flowering pathway genes revealed that KfCDF2 over-expression impacted on transcript levels for CONSTANS (CO) and FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT); key proteins in the day-length dependent induction of flowering. Results suggested that all three TFs likely function in the circadian optimisation of CAM, although whether or not the often small effects were direct or indirect will require further work. Future Chromatin Immunoprecipitation and sequencing experiments will reveal the target genes regulated by these TFs, and the identification of other novel CAM-induced genes from the RNA-seq data, will allow the pathway between the circadian clock and CAM to be elucidated in much greater detail

    Psychological Targets for Lung Cancer Screening Uptake: A Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study

    Introduction: Low uptake of low-dose computed tomography lung cancer screening by high-risk groups compromises its effectiveness and equity as a population-level early detection strategy. Numerous psychological factors are implicated qualitatively or retrospectively, but prospective data are needed to validate their associations with uptake behavior and specify psychological targets for intervention. / Methods: This is a prospective, longitudinal cohort study evaluating psychological correlates of lung cancer screening uptake. Ever-smokers (aged 55–77 y) were invited to a lung health check, at which low-dose computed tomography screening was offered through the SUMMIT Study—a multicenter screening implementation trial. One week after their screening invitation, 44,000 invitees were mailed the self-regulatory questionnaire for lung cancer screening. Regression analyses evaluated the constructs’ associations with uptake (telephoning for an appointment) and sociodemographic characteristics. / Results: Higher odds of uptake were associated with both positive and negative perceptions. Positive perceptions included lung cancer controllability, benefits of early diagnosis, improved survival when lung cancer is detected early, willingness to be treated, and believing smoking cessation is effective in reducing risk. Negative perceptions included a higher lung cancer risk perception, negative beliefs about the consequences of lung cancer, perceiving lung cancer as stigmatized, and a negative emotional response. Although current smokers held the highest risk perceptions, they also reported negative perceptions that could undermine how they behave in response to their risk. / Conclusions: Interventions to improve uptake should focus on changing perceptions that affect how an individual reacts when they believe their risk of lung cancer is high

    Visual classification of feral cat Felis silvestris catus vocalizations

    Cat vocal behavior, in particular, the vocal and social behavior of feral cats, is poorly understood, as are the differences between feral and fully domestic cats. The relationship between feral cat social and vocal behavior is important because of the markedly different ecology of feral and domestic cats, and enhanced comprehension of the repertoire and potential information content of feral cat calls can provide both better understanding of the domestication and socialization process, and improved welfare for feral cats undergoing adoption. Previous studies have used conflicting classification schemes for cat vocalizations, often relying on onomatopoeic or popular descriptions of call types (e.g., “miow”). We studied the vocalizations of 13 unaltered domestic cats that complied with our behavioral definition used to distinguish feral cats from domestic. A total of 71 acoustic units were extracted and visually analyzed for the construction of a hierarchical classification of vocal sounds, based on acoustic properties. We identified 3 major categories (tonal, pulse, and broadband) that further breakdown into 8 subcategories, and show a high degree of reliability when sounds are classified blindly by independent observers (Fleiss’ Kappa KK = 0.863). Due to the limited behavioral contexts in this study, additional subcategories of cat vocalizations may be identified in the future, but our hierarchical classification system allows for the addition of new categories and new subcategories as they are described. This study shows that cat vocalizations are diverse and complex, and provides an objective and reliable classification system that can be used in future studies

    Lung Screen Uptake Trial (LSUT): Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial Testing Targeted Invitation Materials

    Rationale: Low uptake of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening, particularly by current smokers of a low socioeconomic position, compromises effectiveness and equity. Objectives: To compare the effect of a targeted, low-burden, and stepped invitation strategy versus control on uptake of hospital-based Lung Health Check appointments offering LDCT screening. Methods: In a two-arm, blinded, between-subjects, randomized controlled trial, 2,012 participants were selected from 16 primary care practices using these criteria: 1) aged 60 to 75 years, 2) recorded as a current smoker within the last 7 years, and 3) no prespecified exclusion criteria contraindicating LDCT screening. Both groups received a stepped sequence of preinvitation, invitation, and reminder letters from their primary care practitioner offering prescheduled appointments. The key manipulation was the accompanying leaflet. The intervention group’s leaflet targeted psychological barriers and provided low-burden information, mimicking the concept of the U.K. Ministry of Transport’s annual vehicle test (“M.O.T. For Your Lungs”). Measurements and Main Results: Uptake was 52.6%, with no difference between intervention (52.3%) and control (52.9%) groups in unadjusted (odds ratio [OR], 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.82–1.16) or adjusted (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.82–1.17) analyses. Current smokers were less likely to attend (adjusted OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.56–0.86) than former smokers. Socioeconomic deprivation was significantly associated with lower uptake for the control group only (P < 0.01). Conclusions: The intervention did not improve uptake. Regardless of trial arm, uptake was considerably higher than previous clinical and real-world studies, particularly given that the samples were predominantly lower socioeconomic position smokers. Strategies common to both groups, including a Lung Health Check approach, could represent a minimum standard.     Development of a measurement tool to assess public awareness of cancer

    &lt;p&gt;Objective: We aimed to develop and validate a measurement tool to assess cancer awareness in the general population: the cancer awareness measure (CAM).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Methods: Items assessing awareness of cancer warning signs, risk factors, incidence, screening programmes and attitudes towards help seeking were extracted from the literature or generated by expert groups. To determine reliability, the CAM was administered to a university participant panel (n=148), with a sub-sample (n=94) completing it again 2 weeks later. To establish construct validity, CAM scores of cancer experts (n=12) were compared with those of non-medical academics (n=21). Finally, university students (n=49) were randomly assigned to read either a cancer information leaflet or a leaflet with control information before completing the measure, to ensure the CAM was sensitive to change.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Results: Cognitive interviewing indicated that the CAM was being interpreted as intended. Internal reliability (Cronbach's α=0.77) and test–retest reliability (r=0.81) were high. Scores for cancer experts were significantly higher than those for non-medical academics (t(31)=6.8, P&#60;0.001). CAM scores were higher among students who received an intervention leaflet than the control leaflet (t(47)=4.8, P&#60;0.001).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Conclusions: These studies show the psychometric properties of the CAM and support its validity as a measure of cancer awareness in the general population.&lt;/p&gt

    Two-dimensional amine and hydroxy functionalized fused aromatic covalent organic framework

    Ordered two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have generally been synthesized using reversible reactions. It has been difficult to synthesize a similar degree of ordered COFs using irreversible reactions. Developing COFs with a fused aromatic ring system via an irreversible reaction is highly desirable but has remained a significant challenge. Here we demonstrate a COF that can be synthesized from organic building blocks via irreversible condensation (aromatization). The as-synthesized robust fused aromatic COF (F-COF) exhibits high crystallinity. Its lattice structure is characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray diffraction pattern. Because of its fused aromatic ring system, the F-COF structure possesses high physiochemical stability, due to the absence of hydrolysable weak covalent bonds

    Intercolony variation in reproductive skipping in the African penguin

This may be an adaptive decision to protect survival, or a non-adaptive decision driven by individual-specific constraints. Understanding the presence and drivers of reproductive skipping behavior can be important for effective population management, yet in many species such as the endangered African penguin (Spheniscus demersus), these factors remain unknown. This study uses multistate mark-recapture methods to estimate African penguin survival and breeding probabilities at two colonies between 2013 and 2020. Overall, survival (mean ± SE) was higher at Stony Point (0.82 ± 0.01) than at Robben Island (0.77 ± 0.02). Inter-colony differences were linked to food availability; under decreasing sardine (Sardinops sagax) abundance, survival decreased at Robben Island and increased at Stony Point. Additionally, reproductive skipping was evident across both colonies; at Robben Island the probability of a breeder becoming a nonbreeder was ~0.22, versus ~0.1 at Stony Point. Penguins skipping reproduction had a lower probability of future breeding than breeding individuals; this lack of adaptive benefit suggests reproductive skipping is driven by individual-specific constraints. Lower survival and breeding propensity at Robben Island places this colony in greater need of conservation action.
