On the Energy Transfer Performance of Mechanical Nanoresonators Coupled with Electromagnetic Fields
We study the energy transfer performance in electrically and magnetically
coupled mechanical nanoresonators. Using the resonant scattering theory, we
show that magnetically coupled resonators can achieve the same energy transfer
performance as for their electrically coupled counterparts, or even outperform
them within the scale of interest. Magnetic and electric coupling are compared
in the Nanotube Radio, a realistic example of a nano-scale mechanical
resonator. The energy transfer performance is also discussed for a newly
proposed bio-nanoresonator composed of a magnetosomes coated with a net of

An X-ray and neutron reflectometry study of iron corrosion in seawater
The corrosive breakdown of thin iron films supported on silicon substrates under a number of conditions is presentedβin particular to understand better how iron, and hence ferritic steel, behaves in a salty water environment. A combination of X-ray and neutron reflectometry was used to monitor the structures of both the metal and oxide surface layers and also organic corrosion inhibitors adsorbed at the iron/aqueous interface. A range of behaviour in seawater was observed, including complete dissolution and void formation under the metal surface. Importantly, two simple treatmentsβUV/ozone or soaking in ultrapure waterβwere found to significantly protect the iron surface for considerable lengths of time, although evidence of pitting corrosion began after around 10 days. The underlying causes of the efficacies of these treatments were further investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, three potential corrosion inhibitors were investigated: (i) dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) demonstrated no ability to protect the surface; (ii) sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) appeared to accelerate corrosion; (iii) bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate showed an impressive level of protection (the neutron reflectometry results indicated a thick diffuse layer of surfactant of 23 % surface coverage). These findings have been interpreted in terms of preferential inhibitor adsorption at cathodic and anodic surface sites (depending on the nature of the inhibitor)
Accurate reconstruction of insertion-deletion histories by statistical phylogenetics
The Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) is a computational abstraction that
represents a partial summary either of indel history, or of structural
similarity. Taking the former view (indel history), it is possible to use
formal automata theory to generalize the phylogenetic likelihood framework for
finite substitution models (Dayhoff's probability matrices and Felsenstein's
pruning algorithm) to arbitrary-length sequences. In this paper, we report
results of a simulation-based benchmark of several methods for reconstruction
of indel history. The methods tested include a relatively new algorithm for
statistical marginalization of MSAs that sums over a stochastically-sampled
ensemble of the most probable evolutionary histories. For mammalian
evolutionary parameters on several different trees, the single most likely
history sampled by our algorithm appears less biased than histories
reconstructed by other MSA methods. The algorithm can also be used for
alignment-free inference, where the MSA is explicitly summed out of the
analysis. As an illustration of our method, we discuss reconstruction of the

A novel biweekly multidrug regimen of gemcitabine, oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and folinic acid (FA) in pretreated patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma
Previous results suggest that GEM affects 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) metabolism and pharmacokinetics in cancer patients, while combined with oxaliplatin, levo-folinic acid, and 5-FU (GOLF regimen), at doses achievable in cancer patients, determines high cytotoxic and proapoptotic antitumour activity in colon cancer cells in vitro. On these bases we designed a phase IβII clinical trial testing the GOLF
regimen in patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma, who had received at least a prior line of chemotherapy. In total, 29 patients (20 males and nine females) enrolled in the study received every 2 weeks, gemcitabine (patients #1β3 received 600 mgm2; patients # 4β6 received 850 mgm2; while patients # 7β29 received 1000 mgm2) on the day 1, levo-folinic acid (100 mgm2) on the days
1 and 2; 5-fluorouracil (400 mgm2) in bolus injection, followed by a 22-h continuous infusion (800 mgm2) on the days 1 and 2, and oxaliplatin (85 mgm2), 6 h after the 5-FU bolus on day 2. The most frequent side effect was grade IβII haematological toxicity. In total, 28 patients were evaluable for response: three achieved a complete response, nine a partial response, 10 had a stable disease,
and six progressed. The average time to progression and overall survival of the patients was, respectively, 7.26 and 22 months. Our GOLF combination is well tolerated and seems promising for the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer
Human Gyrovirus Apoptin shows a similar subcellular distribution pattern and apoptosis induction as the chicken anaemia virus derived VP3/Apoptin
The chicken anaemia virus-derived protein Apoptin/VP3 (CAV-Apoptin) has the important ability to induce tumour-selective apoptosis in a variety of human cancer cells. Recently the first human Gyrovirus (HGyV) was isolated from a human skin swab. It shows significant structural and organisational resemblance to CAV and encodes a homologue of CAV-Apoptin/VP3. Using overlapping primers we constructed a synthetic human Gyrovirus Apoptin (HGyV-Apoptin) fused to green fluorescent protein in order to compare its apoptotic function in various human cancer cell lines to CAV-Apoptin. HGyV-Apoptin displayed a similar subcellular expression pattern as observed for CAV-Apoptin, marked by translocation to the nucleus of cancer cells, although it is predominantly located in the cytosol of normal human cells. Furthermore, expression of either HGyV-Apoptin or CAV-Apoptin in several cancer cell lines triggered apoptosis at comparable levels. These findings indicate a potential anti-cancer role for HGyV-Apoptin
Disparities and risks of sexually transmissible infections among men who have sex with men in China: a meta-analysis and data synthesis.
BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Hepatitis B and C virus, are emerging public health risks in China, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to assess the magnitude and risks of STIs among Chinese MSM. METHODS: Chinese and English peer-reviewed articles were searched in five electronic databases from January 2000 to February 2013. Pooled prevalence estimates for each STI infection were calculated using meta-analysis. Infection risks of STIs in MSM, HIV-positive MSM and male sex workers (MSW) were obtained. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. RESULTS: Eighty-eight articles (11 in English and 77 in Chinese) investigating 35,203 MSM in 28 provinces were included in this review. The prevalence levels of STIs among MSM were 6.3% (95% CI: 3.5-11.0%) for chlamydia, 1.5% (0.7-2.9%) for genital wart, 1.9% (1.3-2.7%) for gonorrhoea, 8.9% (7.8-10.2%) for hepatitis B (HBV), 1.2% (1.0-1.6%) for hepatitis C (HCV), 66.3% (57.4-74.1%) for human papillomavirus (HPV), 10.6% (6.2-17.6%) for herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) and 4.3% (3.2-5.8%) for Ureaplasma urealyticum. HIV-positive MSM have consistently higher odds of all these infections than the broader MSM population. As a subgroup of MSM, MSW were 2.5 (1.4-4.7), 5.7 (2.7-12.3), and 2.2 (1.4-3.7) times more likely to be infected with chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HCV than the broader MSM population, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prevalence levels of STIs among MSW were significantly higher than the broader MSM population. Co-infection of HIV and STIs were prevalent among Chinese MSM. Integration of HIV and STIs healthcare and surveillance systems is essential in providing effective HIV/STIs preventive measures and treatments. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO NO: CRD42013003721
Constraints on Nucleon Decay via "Invisible" Modes from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
Data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory have been used to constrain the
lifetime for nucleon decay to ``invisible'' modes, such as n -> 3 nu. The
analysis was based on a search for gamma-rays from the de-excitation of the
residual nucleus that would result from the disappearance of either a proton or
neutron from O16. A limit of tau_inv > 2 x 10^{29} years is obtained at 90%
confidence for either neutron or proton decay modes. This is about an order of
magnitude more stringent than previous constraints on invisible proton decay
modes and 400 times more stringent than similar neutron modes.Comment: Update includes missing efficiency factor (limits change by factor of
