    Study of behaviour on simulated daylight ageing of artists¿ acrylic and poly(vinyl acetate) paint films

    [EN] This work proposes a multi-method approach that combines advanced microscopy (SEM/EDX, AFM) and spectroscopy (UV-vis and FTIR) techniques. This approach not only characterises the behaviour of the additives of two commercial poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and acrylic emulsion paints but also simultaneously characterises the changes in chemical composition and morphology observed in the paint films as a result of ageing due to the paints being exposed to an intense source of simulated daylight. In parallel, a series of mechanical tests were performed that correlate the chemical changes in composition and the changes observed in the films' mechanical properties. This work was a comparative study between both types of acrylic and PVAc paints.     The significance of the complement system for the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration — current evidence and translation into clinical application

    BACKGROUND: Dysregulation of the complement system has been shown to play a major role in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: The current evidence from human studies derives from immunohistochemical and proteomic studies in donor eyes, genetic association studies, and studies of blood complement protein levels. These lines of evidence are corroborated by in vitro and animal studies. RESULTS: In AMD donor eyes, detection of complement proteins in drusen suggested local inflammatory processes involving the complement system. Moreover, higher levels of complement proteins in the Bruch's membrane/choroid complex could be detected in AMD donor eyes compared to controls. A large number of independent genetic studies have consistently confirmed the association of AMD with risk or protective variants in genes coding for complement proteins, including complement factor H (CFH), CFH-related proteins 1 and 3, factor B/C2, C3 and factor I. Another set of independent studies detected increased levels of complement activation products in plasma of AMD patients, suggesting that AMD may be a systemic disease and the macula a vulnerable anatomic site of minimal resistance to complement activation. Genotype-phenotype correlations, including the impact of genetic variants on disease progression, gene-environment and pharmacogenetic interactions, have been investigated. There is evidence that complement gene variants may be associated with the progression from early to late forms of AMD, whereas they do not appear to play a significant role when late atrophic AMD has already developed. There are indications for an interaction between genetic variants and supplementation and dietary factors. Also, there is some evidence that variants in the CFH gene influence treatment effects in patients with neovascular AMD. CONCLUSIONS: Such data suggest that the complement system may have a significant role for developing new prophylactic and therapeutic interventions in AMD. In fact, several compounds acting on the complement pathway are currently in clinical trials. Therapeutics that modulate the complement system need to balance inhibition with preservation of sufficient functional activity in order to maintain adequate immune responses and tissue homeostasis. Specifically, targeting the dysfunction appears more adequate than a global suppression of complement activation in chronic diseases such as AMD

    Multiple sclerosis is the most frequent demyelinating disease in adults. It is characterized by demyelination, inflammation, gliosis and a variable loss of axons. Clinically and histologically, it shares features with other demyelinating and/or inflammatory CNS diseases. Diagnosis of an inflammatory demyelinating disease can be challenging, especially in small biopsy specimens. Here, we summarize the histological hallmarks and most important neuropathological differential diagnoses of early MS, and provide practical guidelines for the diagnosis of inflammatory demyelinating diseases

    Search for gravitational waves associated with gamma-ray bursts detected by Fermi and Swift during the LIGO–Virgo run O3b

    We search for gravitational-wave signals associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi and Swift satellites during the second half of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 November 1 15:00 UTC–2020 March 27 17:00 UTC). We conduct two independent searches: a generic gravitational-wave transients search to analyze 86 GRBs and an analysis to target binary mergers with at least one neutron star as short GRB progenitors for 17 events. We find no significant evidence for gravitational-wave signals associated with any of these GRBs. A weighted binomial test of the combined results finds no evidence for subthreshold gravitational-wave signals associated with this GRB ensemble either. We use several source types and signal morphologies during the searches, resulting in lower bounds on the estimated distance to each GRB. Finally, we constrain the population of low-luminosity short GRBs using results from the first to the third observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. The resulting population is in accordance with the local binary neutron star merger rate

    Rayleigh Damping Modelling to Assess Viscous Behaviour in Actuated Breast Tissue

    Breast cancer is a significant health problem worldwide. Emerging non-invasive methods assess tumor presence by its impact on breast tissue mechanics. This paper outlines a method to identify equivalent viscous damping in breast tissue and fit a model based on the Rayleigh damping (RD) model. Surface motion information of actuated breast tissue was captured using the Digital Image Elasto Tomography (DIET) system. The viscous damping was calculated for over 14,000 reference points using an ellipse fitted to the force-displacement hysteresis loop response data to calculate work done. A damping model based on RD is suggested and fit to median filtered data of viscous damping constant plotted against the major ellipse axis. This successfully described the trend for all 29 breasts (14 cancerous, 15 healthy) with average R2 values ranging from 0.79-0.88. One model coefficient, ‘a’, proportional to local mass, showed reasonable consistency among the subjects and decreased with increasing frequency. No significant difference in this ‘a’ coefficient between healthy and cancerous breasts showed indication of diagnostic potential. However, consistent values across all breasts suggest it is a fundamental tissue property. Further suggestions to normalise the major axis by frequency demonstrate the potential for the model to be developed to describe viscous behaviour of breast tissue in the form of storage and loss modulus

    Rayleigh Damping Modelling for Tumor Detection using Digital Image Elasto Tomography (DIET)

    This study develops a model based on Rayleigh Damping (RD) with potential use in breast cancer diagnostics. Displacement data of over 14,000 reference points on the breast surface from 14 breasts was captured using the Digital Image Elasto Tomography (DIET) system. The reference points were split into four segments and an ellipse fit utilized to calculate the work done and consequent viscous damping constant for each reference point. Fitting a model based on RD to median filtered data gave consistent results for one model coefficient across all breasts. The other coefficient was seen to have diagnostic potential when the model was fit to unfiltered data, and is the focus of this paper. The coefficient value was compared between breast segments adjacent to and containing the tumor (locations given from X-ray mammography) to those opposite the tumor. A total of 11 out of 14 breasts had a higher coefficient found in the tumor segment and all breasts had a higher coefficient in at least one adjacent segment. This method showed potential for breast specific diagnosis and tumor localisation using the DIET system
