    Emission limit values for building materials. Environmental foundation and consequences for building materials

    This report presents alternative emission limit values for inorganic components to be used in the revision of the Building Materials Decree (1999) in the Netherlands. Three key factors determine the emission limit value: (1) the environmental compartment under consideration, with its dimensions and the accounted for, (2) the desired level of environmental protection and (3) the scenario applying to the intended use of the construction material. Emission limit values have been derived here from modelled concentrations in soil, groundwater and surface water. The desired level of protection has been elaborated as a stand-still approach (based on quality target values and a risk-based approach (based on PNECs). Two exposure models were used for taking the effects of a time-dependent exposure of the soil to leached components into account, for vertical transport through the soil profile and for retardation of components in the soil profile. The PEARL model was used for binding described by equilibrium adsorption. The ORCHESTRA model was used for binding that also takes speciation into account. For surface water, a dilution factor was computed assuming a certain mixing zone, dependent on the size of the surface water. The consequences of the proposed alternative emission limit values have been estimated on the basis of information in a database containing results of leaching tests for construction materials. The alternatives proposed form the basis for a political decision-making process, where environmental protection will be balanced with other socio-economic concerns.In dit rapport worden varianten berekend die de huidige normen voor het hergebruik van bouwmaterialen - zoals vastgelegd in het Bouwstoffenbesluit 1999 - kunnen vervangen. De huidige normen vormden een belemmering voor het hergebruik van bouwmaterialen. Omdat er wel behoefte bestond aan hergebruik, zijn de mogelijkheden tot een eventuele verruiming, die wel milieuverantwoord blijft, onderzocht. Het bouwstoffenbesluit bevat normen voor de maximale uitstoot van anorganische stoffen (zoals metalen) in bouwmaterialen. Milieuhygienische belangen worden nu afgewogen tegen de wens tot ruimere mogelijkheden voor hergebruik. Het onderzoek houdt rekening met verschillende elementen bij het hergebruik van bouwmaterialen: het milieucompartiment, het gewenste beschermingsniveau en het toepassingsscenario van de bouwstof. Er zijn twee alternatieve computermodellen gebruikt, die de verschillen in de wijzen waarop vrijgekomen stoffen zich aan de bodem binden, berekenen. Daarnaast is ook de menging van vrijgekomen stoffen voor oppervlaktewater berekend. De berekende waarden zijn afgezet tegen de kwaliteitsgegevens van bouwstoffen die door verschillende bedrijfstakken zijn aangeleverd. De voorgestelde varianten maken onderdeel uit van een beleidsmatig besluitvormingsproces, waarbij ook andere socio-economische aspecten worden afgewogen

    Video enhancement using adaptive spatio-temporal connective filter and piecewise mapping

    This paper presents a novel video enhancement system based on an adaptive spatio-temporal connective (ASTC) noise filter and an adaptive piecewise mapping function (APMF). For ill-exposed videos or those with much noise, we first introduce a novel local image statistic to identify impulse noise pixels, and then incorporate it into the classical bilateral filter to form ASTC, aiming to reduce the mixture of the most two common types of noises - Gaussian and impulse noises in spatial and temporal directions. After noise removal, we enhance the video contrast with APMF based on the statistical information of frame segmentation results. The experiment results demonstrate that, for diverse low-quality videos corrupted by mixed noise, underexposure, overexposure, or any mixture of the above, the proposed system can automatically produce satisfactory results

    Recruitment, augmentation and apoptosis of rat osteoclasts in 1,25-(OH)2D3 response to short-term treatment with 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3in vivo

    Background Although much is known about the regulation of osteoclast (OC) formation and activity, little is known about OC senescence. In particular, the fate of of OC seen after 1,25-(OH)2D3 administration in vivo is unclear. There is evidence that the normal fate of OC is to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death). We have investigated the effect of short-term application of high dose 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2D3) on OC apoptosis in an experimental rat model. Methods OC recruitment, augmentation and apoptosis was visualised and quantitated by staining histochemically for tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), double staining for TRAP/ED1 or TRAP/DAPI, in situ DNA fragmentation end labelling and histomorphometric analysis. Results Short-term treatment with high-dose 1,25-(OH)2D3 increased the recruitment of OC precursors in the bone marrow resulting in a short-lived increase in OC numbers. This was rapidly followed by an increase in the number of apoptotic OC and their subsequent removal. The response of OC to 1,25-(OH)2D3 treatment was dose and site dependent; higher doses producing stronger, more rapid responses and the response in the tibiae being consistently stronger and more rapid than in the vertebrae. Conclusions This study demonstrates that (1) after recruitment, OC are removed from the resorption site by apoptosis (2) the combined use of TRAP and ED1 can be used to identify OC and their precursors in vivo (3) double staining for TRAP and DAPI or in situ DNA fragmentation end labelling can be used to identify apoptotic OC in vivo

    Automated Algebraic Reasoning for Collections and Local Variables with Lenses

    Lenses are a useful algebraic structure for giving a unifying semantics to program variables in a variety of store models. They support efficient automated proof in the Isabelle/UTP verification framework. In this paper, we expand our lens library with (1) dynamic lenses, that support mutable indexed collections, such as arrays, and (2) symmetric lenses, that allow partitioning of a state space into disjoint local and global regions to support variable scopes. From this basis, we provide an enriched program model in Isabelle/UTP for collection variables and variable blocks. For the latter, we adopt an approach first used by Back and von Wright, and derive weakest precondition and Hoare calculi. We demonstrate several examples, including verification of insertion sor

    The Problem of Signal and Symbol Integration: A Study of Cooperative Mobile Autonomous Agent Behaviors

    This paper explores and reasons about the interplay between symbolic and continuous representations. We first provide some historical perspective on signal and symbol integration as viewed by the Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics and Computer Vision communities. The domain of autonomous robotic agents residing in dynamically changing environments anchors well different aspects of this integration and allows us to look at the problem in its entirety. Models of reasoning, sensing and control actions of such agents determine three different dimensions for discretization of the agent-world behavioral state space. The design and modeling of robotic agents, where these three aspects have to be closely tied together, provide a good experimental platform for addressing the signal-to-symbol transformation problem.     Comparison of normalisation methods for surface-enhanced laser desorption and ionisation (SELDI) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry data

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mass spectrometry for biological data analysis is an active field of research, providing an efficient way of high-throughput proteome screening. A popular variant of mass spectrometry is SELDI, which is often used to measure sample populations with the goal of developing (clinical) classifiers. Unfortunately, not only is the data resulting from such measurements quite noisy, variance between replicate measurements of the same sample can be high as well. Normalisation of spectra can greatly reduce the effect of this technical variance and further improve the quality and interpretability of the data. However, it is unclear which normalisation method yields the most informative result.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this paper, we describe the first systematic comparison of a wide range of normalisation methods, using two objectives that should be met by a good method. These objectives are minimisation of inter-spectra variance and maximisation of signal with respect to class separation. The former is assessed using an estimation of the coefficient of variation, the latter using the classification performance of three types of classifiers on real-world datasets representing two-class diagnostic problems. To obtain a maximally robust evaluation of a normalisation method, both objectives are evaluated over multiple datasets and multiple configurations of baseline correction and peak detection methods. Results are assessed for statistical significance and visualised to reveal the performance of each normalisation method, in particular with respect to using no normalisation. The normalisation methods described have been implemented in the freely available MASDA R-package.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In the general case, normalisation of mass spectra is beneficial to the quality of data. The majority of methods we compared performed significantly better than the case in which no normalisation was used. We have shown that normalisation methods that scale spectra by a factor based on the dispersion (e.g., standard deviation) of the data clearly outperform those where a factor based on the central location (e.g., mean) is used. Additional improvements in performance are obtained when these factors are estimated locally, using a sliding window within spectra, instead of globally, over full spectra. The underperforming category of methods using a globally estimated factor based on the central location of the data includes the method used by the majority of SELDI users.</p

    Fragment reattachment, reproductive status, and health indicators of the invasive colonial tunicate Didemnum vexillum with implications for dispersal

D. vexillum can inflict ecological and economic damage through biofouling and habitat modification. Natural and anthropogenic processes that fragment colonies of D. vexillum may be accelerating the spread of this invader. Reattachment success and fragment viability were confirmed in the laboratory after four weeks of suspension in experimental aquaria. The shape of suspended D. vexillum fragments progressed from flattened to globular spheres and then flattened again after reattachment to the substrate. Reproductive activity, confirmed by the presence of eggs and larvae, was observed for fragments suspended up to three weeks suggesting that D. vexillum is capable of reproducing while in a fragmented, suspended state. An index of colony health was used to monitor change in D. vexillum health while in suspension. Overall, colony health declined with time in suspension although colonies that appeared dead (black and gray in overall color) still contained a substantial number of healthy live zooids. These results suggest that activities that cause fragmentation can significantly facilitate the spread of D. vexillum. Coastal managers should consider reducing or eliminating, when practical, activities that return fragmented colonies of D. vexillum to the water. In-water cleaning of biofouling and dredging are likely expediting the spread of this invasive species unless biofouling can be contained and removed from the water.This research was funded by the NOAA Aquatic Invasive Species Program

    Validation of an arterial tortuosity measure with application to hypertension collection of clinical hypertensive patients

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hypertension may increase tortuosity or twistedness of arteries. We applied a centerline extraction algorithm and tortuosity metric to magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) brain images to quantitatively measure the tortuosity of arterial vessel centerlines. The most commonly used arterial tortuosity measure is the distance factor metric (DFM). This study tested a DFM based measurement’s ability to detect increases in arterial tortuosity of hypertensives using existing images. Existing images presented challenges such as different resolutions which may affect the tortuosity measurement, different depths of the area imaged, and different artifacts of imaging that require filtering.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The stability and accuracy of alternative centerline algorithms was validated in numerically generated models and test brain MRA data. Existing images were gathered from previous studies and clinical medical systems by manually reading electronic medical records to identify hypertensives and negatives. Images of different resolutions were interpolated to similar resolutions. Arterial tortuosity in MRA images was measured from a DFM curve and tested on numerically generated models as well as MRA images from two hypertensive and three negative control populations. Comparisons were made between different resolutions, different filters, hypertensives versus negatives, and different negative controls.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In tests using numerical models of a simple helix, the measured tortuosity increased as expected with more tightly coiled helices. Interpolation reduced resolution-dependent differences in measured tortuosity. The Korean hypertensive population had significantly higher arterial tortuosity than its corresponding negative control population across multiple arteries. In addition one negative control population of different ethnicity had significantly less arterial tortuosity than the other two.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Tortuosity can be compared between images of different resolutions by interpolating from lower to higher resolutions. Use of a universal negative control was not possible in this study. The method described here detected elevated arterial tortuosity in a hypertensive population compared to the negative control population and can be used to study this relation in other populations.</p
