Spatial variation of heart failure and air pollution in Warwickshire, UK : an investigation of small scale variation at the ward-level
Objectives To map using geospatial modelling techniques the morbidity and mortality caused by heart failure within Warwickshire to characterise and quantify any influence of air pollution on these risks.
Design Cross-sectional.
Setting Warwickshire, UK.
Participants Data from all of the 105 current Warwickshire County wards were collected on hospital admissions and deaths due to heart failure.
Results In multivariate analyses, the presence of higher mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) in a ward (3.35:1.89, 4.99), benzene (Ben) (31.9:8.36, 55.85) and index of multiple deprivation (IMD; 0.02: 0.01, 0.03), were consistently associated with a higher risk of heart failure morbidity. Particulate matter (Pm; −12.93: −20.41, −6.54) was negatively associated with the risk of heart failure morbidity. No association was found between sulfur dioxide (SO2) and heart failure morbidity. The risk of heart failure mortality was higher in wards with a higher NOx (4.30: 1.68, 7.37) and wards with more inhabitants 50+ years old (1.60: 0.47, 2.92). Pm was negatively associated (−14.69: −23.46, −6.50) with heart failure mortality. SO2, Ben and IMD scores were not associated with heart failure mortality. There was a prominent variation in heart failure morbidity and mortality risk across wards, the highest risk being in the regions around Nuneaton and Bedworth.
Conclusions This study showed distinct spatial patterns in heart failure morbidity and mortality, suggesting the potential role of environmental factors beyond individual-level risk factors. Air pollution levels should therefore be taken into account when considering the wider determinants of public health and the impact that changes in air pollution might have on the health of a population
Large anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic insulator-topological insulator heterostructures
We demonstrate the van der Waals epitaxy of the topological insulator
compound Bi2Te3 on the ferromagnetic insulator Cr2Ge2Te6. The layers are
oriented with (001) of Bi2Te3 parallel to (001) of Cr2Ge2Te6 and (110) of
Bi2Te3 parallel to (100) of Cr2Ge2Te6. Cross-sectional transmission electron
microscopy indicates the formation of a sharp interface. At low temperatures,
bilayers consisting of Bi2Te3 on Cr2Ge2Te6 exhibit a large anomalous Hall
effect (AHE). Tilted field studies of the AHE indicate that the easy axis lies
along the c-axis of the heterostructure, consistent with magnetization
measurements in bulk Cr2Ge2Te6. The 61 K Curie temperature of Cr2Ge2Te6 and the
use of near-stoichiometric materials may lead to the development of spintronic

Microstructural Pattern Formation during Far-from-Equilibrium Alloy Solidification
We introduce a new phase-field formulation of rapid alloy solidification that
quantitatively incorporates non-equilibrium effects at the solid-liquid
interface over a very wide range of interface velocities. Simulations identify
a new dynamical instability of dendrite tip growth driven by solute trapping at
velocities approaching the absolute stability limit. They also reproduce the
formation of the widely observed banded microstructures, revealing how this
instability triggers transitions between dendritic and microsegregation-free
solidification. Predicted band spacings agree quantitatively with observations
in rapidly solidified Al-Cu thin films

Design of temperature insurance index and risk zonation for single-season rice in response to high-temperature and low-temperature damage: a case study of Jiangsu Province, China.
Disaster insurance is an important tool for achieving sustainable development in modern agriculture. However, in China, the design of such insurance indexes is far from sufficient. In this paper, the single-season rice in Jiangsu Province of China is taken as an example to design the high-temperature damage index in summer and the low-temperature damage index in autumn to constructtheformulacalculatingtheweatheroutputandsingle-seasonriceyieldreduction. Thedaily highest, lowest and average temperatures between 1999 and 2015 are selected as main variables for the temperature disaster index to quantitatively analyze the relationship between the temperature indexandtheyieldreductionrateofthesingle-seasonrice. Thetemperaturedisasterindexcanbeput into the relevant model to obtain the yield reduction rate of the year and determine whether to pay the indemnity. Then, the burn analysis is used to determine the insurance premium rate for all cities in Jiangsu Province under four-level deductibles, and the insurance premium rate can be used for the risk division of the Province. The research provides some insights for the design of agricultural weather insurance products, and the empirical results provide a reference for the design of similar single-season rice temperature index insurance products

Surface-Bound Cucurbit[8]uril Catenanes on Magnetic Nanoparticles Exhibiting Molecular Recognition.
We demonstrate the preparation of surface-bound cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) catenanes on silica nanoparticles (NPs), where CB[8] was employed as a tethered supramolecular "handcuff" to selectively capture target guest molecules. In this catenane, CB[8] was threaded onto a methyl viologen (MV(2+) ) axle and immobilized onto silica NPs. The formation of CB[8] catenanes on NPs were confirmed by UV/Vis titration experiments and lithographic characterization, demonstrating a high density of CB[8] on the silica NPs surface, 0.56 nm(-2) . This CB[8] catenane system exhibits specific molecular recognition towards certain aromatic molecules such as perylene bis(diimide), naphthol and aromatic amino acids, and thus it can act as a nanoscale molecular receptor for target guests. Furthermore, we also demonstrate its use as an efficient and recyclable nano-platform for peptide separation. By embedding magnetic NPs inside silica NPs, separation could be achieved by simply applying an external magnetic field. Moreover, the peptides captured by the catenanes could be released by reversible single-electron reduction of MV(2+) . The entire process demonstrated high recoverability.X. Fracture of a Polyethylene Tibial Post in a Scorpio Posterior-Stabilized Knee Prosthesis
We report the case of a polyethylene tibial post fracture in a 72-year-old woman 14 months after a Scorpio posterior-stabilized (PS) total knee arthroplasty. The polyethylene wear was found around the fracture site of the post, especially over the anterior aspect of the post base. The failure mechanism of the post fracture in the present case was anterior impingement with excessive wear over the base of the anterior aspect of the tibial post, which became a stress-riser of post and cam articulation. This is the first report of a polyethylene tibial post fracture of a Scorpio PS prosthesis
Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the merging cluster of galaxies PLCK G036.7+14.9
We present Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of PLCK G036.7+14.9 from the
Chandra-Planck Legacy Program. The high resolution X-ray observations reveal
two close subclusters, G036N and G036S, which were not resolved by previous
ROSAT, optical, or recent Planck observations. We perform detailed imaging and
spectral analyses and use a simplified model to study the kinematics of this
system. The basic picture is that PLCK G036.7+14.9 is undergoing a major merger
(mass ratio close to unity) between the two massive subclusters, with the
merger largely along the line-of-sight and probably at an early stage. G036N
hosts a small, moderate cool-core, while G036S has at most a very weak
cool-core in the central 40 kpc region. The difference in core cooling times is
unlikely to be caused by the ongoing merger disrupting a pre-existing cool-core
in G036S. G036N also hosts an unresolved radio source in the center, which may
be heating the gas if the radio source is extended. The Planck derived mass is
higher than the X-ray measured mass of either subcluster, but is lower than the
X-ray measured mass of the whole cluster, due to the fact that Planck does not
resolve PLCK G036.7+14.9 into subclusters and interprets it as a single
cluster. This mass discrepancy could induce significant bias to the mass
function if such previously unresolved systems are common in the Planck cluster
sample. High resolution X-ray observations are necessary to identify the
fraction of such systems and correct such a bias for the purpose of precision
