Synchrony affects Taylor’s law in theory and data
Two widely confirmed patterns in ecology are Taylor’s law (TL), which states that the variance of population density is approximately a power of mean population density, and population synchrony, the tendency of species’ population sizes in different areas to be correlated through time. TL has been applied in many areas, including fisheries management, conservation, agriculture, finance, physics, and meteorology. Synchrony of populations increases the likelihood of large-scale pest or disease outbreaks and shortages of resources. We show that changed synchrony modifies and can invalidate TL. Widespread recent changes in synchrony, possibly resulting from climate change, may broadly affect TL and its applications

Innate immune signaling in hearts and buccal mucosa cells of patients with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy
Background: Nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling in cardiac myocytes causes disease in a mouse model of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) by mobilizing CCR2-expressing macrophages that promote myocardial injury and arrhythmias. Buccal mucosa cells exhibit pathologic features similar to those seen in cardiac myocytes in patients with ACM. Objectives: We sought to determine if persistent innate immune signaling via NF-κB occurs in cardiac myocytes in patients with ACM and if this is associated with myocardial infiltration of proinflammatory cells expressing CCR2. We also determined if buccal mucosa cells from young subjects with inherited disease alleles exhibit NF-κB signaling. Methods: We analyzed myocardium from ACM patients who died suddenly or required cardiac transplantation. We also analyzed buccal mucosa cells from young subjects with inherited disease alleles. The presence of immunoreactive signal for RelA/p65 in nuclei of cardiac myocytes and buccal cells was used as a reliable indicator of active NF-κB signaling. We also counted myocardial CCR2-expressing cells. Results: RelA/p65 signal was seen in numerous cardiac myocyte nuclei in 34 of 36 cases of ACM but not in 19 age-matched control individuals. Cells expressing CCR2 were increased in patient hearts in numbers directly correlated with the number of cardiac myocytes showing NF-κB signaling. NF-κB signaling was observed in buccal cells in young subjects with active disease. Conclusions: Patients with clinically active ACM exhibit persistent innate immune responses in cardiac myocytes and buccal mucosa cells, reflecting a local and systemic inflammatory process. Such individuals may benefit from anti-inflammatory therapy
Job Search Behavior of Employed Managers
Job search typically has been thought of as an antecedent to voluntary turnover or job choice behavior. This study extends the existing literature by proposing a model of the job search process and examining the job search behavior of employed managers. Managers were initially surveyed about their job search activity over the past year. Approximately one year later, the same managers were surveyed to assess whether they had changed jobs since the initial survey, and the circumstances surrounding the job change. This survey data was matched with job, organizational, and personal information contained in the data base of a large executive search firm. Results suggest that dissatisfaction with different aspects of the organization and job were more strongly related to job search than were perceptions of greener pastures. Moreover, although some job search activity does facilitate turnover, a considerable amount of search does not lead to turnover. Thus, it appears that search serves many purposes. Evaluation of early and late presentation of patients with ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid to two major tertiary referral hospitals in the United Kingdom
PURPOSE: Ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid (OcMMP) is a sight-threatening autoimmune disease in which referral to specialists units for further management is a common practise. This study aims to describe referral patterns, disease phenotype and management strategies in patients who present with either early or established disease to two large tertiary care hospitals in the United Kingdom.\ud

PATIENTS AND METHODS: In all, 54 consecutive patients with a documented history of OcMMP were followed for 24 months. Two groups were defined: (i) early-onset disease (EOD:<3 years, n=26, 51 eyes) and (ii) established disease (EstD:>5 years, n=24, 48 eyes). Data were captured at first clinic visit, and at 12 and 24 months follow-up. Information regarding duration, activity and stage of disease, visual acuity (VA), therapeutic strategies and clinical outcome were analysed.\ud

RESULTS: Patients with EOD were younger and had more severe conjunctival inflammation (76% of inflamed eyes) than the EstD group, who had poorer VA (26.7%=VA<3/60, P<0.01) and more advanced disease. Although 40% of patients were on existing immunosuppression, 48% required initiation or switch to more potent immunotherapy. In all, 28% (14) were referred back to the originating hospitals for continued care. Although inflammation had resolved in 78% (60/77) at 12 months, persistence of inflammation and progression did not differ between the two phenotypes. Importantly, 42% demonstrated disease progression in the absence of clinically detectable inflammation.\ud

CONCLUSIONS: These data highlight that irrespective of OcMMP phenotype, initiation or escalation of potent immunosuppression is required at tertiary hospitals. Moreover, the conjunctival scarring progresses even when the eye remains clinically quiescent. Early referral to tertiary centres is recommended to optimise immunosuppression and limit long-term ocular damage.\ud

Analysis of buccal mucosa as a prognostic tool in children with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy
Background
The diagnosis of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is challenging especially in children at risk of adverse events. Analysis of cardiac myocyte junctional protein distribution may have diagnostic and prognostic implications, but its utility is limited by the need for a myocardial sample. We previously reported that buccal mucosa cells show junctional protein redistribution similar to that seen in cardiac myocytes of adult patients with ACM.
Objectives
We aimed to determine when junctional protein distribution abnormalities first occur in children with ACM variants and whether they correlate with progression of clinically apparent disease.
Methods
We analyzed buccal mucosa samples of children and adolescents with a family history of ACM (n = 13) and age-matched controls (n = 13). Samples were immunostained for plakoglobin, desmoplakin, plakophilin-1 and connexin43 and analyzed by confocal microscopy. All participants were swabbed at least twice with an average interval of 12–18 months between samplings.
Results
Junctional protein re-localization in buccal mucosa cells did not correlate with the presence of ACM-causing variants but instead occurred with clinical onset of disease. No changes in protein distribution were seen unless and until there was clinical evidence of disease. In addition, progressive shifts in the distribution of key proteins correlated with worsening of the disease phenotype. Finally, we observed restoration of junctional signal for Cx43 in patient with a favorable response to anti-arrhythmic therapy.
Conclusions
Due to ethical concerns about obtaining heart biopsies in children with no apparent disease, it has not been possible to analyze molecular changes in cardiac myocytes with the onset/progression of clinical disease. Using buccal smears as a surrogate for the myocardium may facilitate future studies of mechanisms and pathophysiological consequences of junctional protein redistribution in ACM. Buccal cells may also be a safe and inexpensive tool for risk stratification and potentially monitoring response to treatment in children bearing ACM variants
Using sequence data to identify alternative routes and risk of infection: a case-study of campylobacter in Scotland
<b>Background:</b> Genetic typing data are a potentially powerful resource for determining how infection is acquired. In this paper MLST typing was used to distinguish the routes and risks of infection of humans with Campylobacter jejuni from poultry and ruminant sources.<p></p>
<b>Methods:</b> C. jejuni samples from animal and environmental sources and from reported human cases confirmed between June 2005 and September 2006 were typed using MLST. The STRUCTURE software was used to assign the specific sequence types of the sporadic human cases to a particular source. We then used mixed case-case logistic regression analysis to compare the risk factors for being infected with C. jejuni from different sources.<p></p>
<b>Results:</b> A total of 1,599 (46.3%) cases were assigned to poultry, 1,070 (31.0%) to ruminant and 67 (1.9%) to wild bird sources; the remaining 715 (20.7%) did not have a source that could be assigned with a probability of greater than 0.95. Compared to ruminant sources, cases attributed to poultry sources were typically among adults (odds ratio (OR) = 1.497, 95% confidence intervals (CIs) = 1.211, 1.852), not among males (OR = 0.834, 95% CIs = 0.712, 0.977), in areas with population density of greater than 500 people/km(2) (OR = 1.213, 95% CIs = 1.030, 1.431), reported in the winter (OR = 1.272, 95% CIs = 1.067, 1.517) and had undertaken recent overseas travel (OR = 1.618, 95% CIs = 1.056, 2.481). The poultry assigned strains had a similar epidemiology to the unassigned strains, with the exception of a significantly higher likelihood of reporting overseas travel in unassigned strains.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions:</b> Rather than estimate relative risks for acquiring infection, our analyses show that individuals acquire C. jejuni infection from different sources have different associated risk factors. By enhancing our ability to identify at-risk groups and the times at which these groups are likely to be at risk, this work allows public health messages to be targeted more effectively. The rapidly increasing capacity to conduct genetic typing of pathogens makes such traced epidemiological analysis more accessible and has the potential to substantially enhance epidemiological risk factor studies
Phylogenetic Codivergence Supports Coevolution of Mimetic Heliconius Butterflies
The unpalatable and warning-patterned butterflies _Heliconius erato_ and _Heliconius melpomene_ provide the best studied example of mutualistic Müllerian mimicry, thought – but rarely demonstrated – to promote coevolution. Some of the strongest available evidence for coevolution comes from phylogenetic codivergence, the parallel divergence of ecologically associated lineages. Early evolutionary reconstructions suggested codivergence between mimetic populations of _H. erato_ and _H. melpomene_, and this was initially hailed as the most striking known case of coevolution. However, subsequent molecular phylogenetic analyses found discrepancies in phylogenetic branching patterns and timing (topological and temporal incongruence) that argued against codivergence. We present the first explicit cophylogenetic test of codivergence between mimetic populations of _H. erato_ and _H. melpomene_, and re-examine the timing of these radiations. We find statistically significant topological congruence between multilocus coalescent population phylogenies of _H. erato_ and _H. melpomene_, supporting repeated codivergence of mimetic populations. Divergence time estimates, based on a Bayesian coalescent model, suggest that the evolutionary radiations of _H. erato_ and _H. melpomene_ occurred over the same time period, and are compatible with a series of temporally congruent codivergence events. This evidence supports a history of reciprocal coevolution between Müllerian co-mimics characterised by phylogenetic codivergence and parallel phenotypic change

NASA's Solar Probe Plus (SPP) mission will make the first in situ measurements of the solar corona and the birthplace of the solar wind. The FIELDS instrument suite on SPP will make direct measurements of electric and magnetic fields, the properties of in situ plasma waves, electron density and temperature profiles, and interplanetary radio emissions, amongst other things. Drawing firmer conclusions: autistic children show no evidence of a local processing bias in a controlled copying task
Drawing tasks are frequently used to test competing theories of visuospatial skills in autism. Yet, methodological differences between studies have led to inconsistent findings. To distinguish between accounts based on local bias or global deficit, we present a simple task that has previously revealed dissociable local/global impairments in neuropsychological patients. Autistic and typical children copied corner elements, arranged in a square configuration. Grouping cues were manipulated to test whether global properties affected the accuracy of reproduction. All children were similarly affected by these manipulations. There was no group difference in the reproduction of local elements, although global accuracy was negatively related to better local processing for autistic children. These data speak against influential theories of visuospatial differences in autism
