    Thermal instability in spherical liquid shells induced by surface tension

    A linear perturbation method is employed to determine the condition for neutral stability in spherical liquid shells induced by surface tension mechanism. Three possible boundary conditions are considered: at least one boundary free or both. The critical Marangoni numbers for the onset of cellular convections are found for two types of steady radial temperature distributions in the spherical shells. Results are compared with those induced by buoyancy mechnism. It is concluded that surface tension forces are much more effective than buoyancy forces in producing thermal instability and a parabolic steady temperature distribution is more susceptible than a linear one to thermal disturbances due to surface tension forces.     Towards Optimised Cell Design of Thin Film Silicon-Based Solid-State Batteries via Modelling and Experimental Characterisation

    To realise the promise of solid-state batteries, negative electrode materials exhibiting large volumetric expansions, such as Li and Si, must be used. These volume changes can cause significant mechanical stresses and strains that affect cell performance and durability, however their role and nature in SSBs are poorly understood. Here, a 2D electro-chemo-mechanical model is constructed and experimentally validated using steady-state, transient and pulsed electrochemical methods. The model geometry is taken as a representative cross-section of a non-porous, thin-film solid-state battery with an amorphous Si (a-Si) negative electrode, lithium phosphorous oxynitride (LiPON) solid electrolyte and LiCoO2 (LCO) positive electrode. A viscoplastic model is used to predict the build-up of strains and plastic deformation of a-Si as a result of (de)lithiation during cycling. A suite of electrochemical tests, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique and hybrid pulse power characterisation are carried out to establish key parameters for model validation. The validated model is used to explore the peak interfacial (a-Si∣LiPON) stress and strain as a function of the relative electrode thickness (up to a factor of 4), revealing a peak volumetric expansion from 69% to 104% during cycling at 1C. The validation of this electro-chemo-mechanical model under load and pulsed operating conditions will aid in the cell design and optimisation of solid-state battery technologies

    Vanadyl sulfate inhibits NO production via threonine phosphorylation of eNOS.

    Exposure to excessive vanadium occurs in some occupations and with consumption of some dietary regimens for weight reduction and body building. Because vanadium is vasoactive, individuals exposed to excessive vanadium may develop adverse vascular effects. We have previously shown that vanadyl sulfate causes acute pulmonary vasoconstriction, which could be attributed in part to inhibition of nitric oxide production. In the present study we investigated whether NO inhibition was related to phosphorylation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). VOSO4 produced dose-dependent constriction of pulmonary arteries in isolated perfused lungs and pulmonary arterial rings and a right shift of the acetylcholine-dependent vasorelaxation curve. VOSO4 inhibited constitutive as well as A23187-stimulated NO production. Constitutive NO inhibition was accompanied by increased Thr495 (threonine at codon 495) phosphorylation of eNOS, which would inhibit eNOS activity. Thr495 phosphorylation of eNOS and inhibition of NO were partially reversed by pretreatment with calphostin C, a protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor. There were no changes in Ser1177 (serine at codon 1177) or tyrosine phosphorylation of eNOS. These results indicate that VOSO4 induced acute pulmonary vasoconstriction that was mediated in part by the inhibition of endothelial NO production via PKC-dependent phosphorylation of Thr495 of eNOS.     Effect of Film Injection Location on Local Heat Transfer Coefficient on a Gas Turbine Blade

    Experiments were performed to study the effect of film hole location on local heat transfer coefficient distribution of a turbine blade model with air or CO2 film injection to simulate coolant density effect. Tests were performed on a five blade linear cascade at the chord Reynolds number of 3×105 at cascade inlet. The test blade had three rows of film holes in the leading edge region and two rows each on the pressure and suction surfaces. Film hole locations were varied by leaving the desired ones open and plugging the rest. A combination of turbulence grid and unsteady wake was used to generate upstream high turbulence condition. Results indicate that film injection by itself causes a substantial increase in Nusselt numbers over a blade model without film holes. An increase in mainstream turbulence intensity causes an increase in Nusselt numbers over most of the blade surface, for both coolants, and at all blowing ratios. Film injection promotes an earlier boundary layer transition on the suction surface and the onset of transition depends on the film injection location; but at high turbulence levels, transition location is almost independent of film injection location

    A low density of 0.8 g/cc for the Trojan binary asteroid 617 Patroclus

    The Trojan population consists of two swarms of asteroids following the same orbit as Jupiter and located at the L4 and L5 Lagrange points of the Jupiter-Sun system (leading and following Jupiter by 60 degrees). The asteroid 617 Patroclus is the only known binary Trojan (Merline et al. 2001). The orbit of this double system was hitherto unknown. Here we report that the components, separated by 680 km, move around the system centre of mass, describing roughly a circular orbit. Using the orbital parameters, combined with thermal measurements to estimate the size of the components, we derive a very low density of 0.8 g/cc. The components of Patroclus are therefore very porous or composed mostly of water ice, suggesting that they could have been formed in the outer part of the solar system.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    Transcription profiling reveals potential mechanisms of dysbiosis in the oral microbiome of rhesus macaques with chronic untreated SIV infection.

    A majority of individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have inadequate access to antiretroviral therapy and ultimately develop debilitating oral infections that often correlate with disease progression. Due to the impracticalities of conducting host-microbe systems-based studies in HIV infected patients, we have evaluated the potential of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infected rhesus macaques to serve as a non-human primate model for oral manifestations of HIV disease. We present the first description of the rhesus macaque oral microbiota and show that a mixture of human commensal bacteria and "macaque versions" of human commensals colonize the tongue dorsum and dental plaque. Our findings indicate that SIV infection results in chronic activation of antiviral and inflammatory responses in the tongue mucosa that may collectively lead to repression of epithelial development and impact the microbiome. In addition, we show that dysbiosis of the lingual microbiome in SIV infection is characterized by outgrowth of Gemella morbillorum that may result from impaired macrophage function. Finally, we provide evidence that the increased capacity of opportunistic pathogens (e.g. E. coli) to colonize the microbiome is associated with reduced production of antimicrobial peptides
