    Surviving a transfixing gunshot wound to the head 70 years ago.

    Surviving a gunshot wound to the head is a rare event, particularly in the past when medical treatment was much less advanced than it is today. Moreover, the finding of such a case as an identified specimen within a museum collection is even more uncommon. This led us to report on this unique case in this paper as it poses a challenge to forensic anthropology and provides a unique educational oppourtunity. The skull from the Collection at the Cranium Museum in the Department of Morphology and Genetic at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) dates back to 1946. For trauma registration the bone location, severity, trauma aetiology, trauma classification, description, callus formation, periosteal reaction, degree and success of repair, and an estimate of the time elapsed since the trauma, were all assessed. To explore the case radiologically a CT scan of the skull was performed. Considering the survival of the patient and the morphology of the wound it is likely that the injury was caused by a small calibre, low-velocity gunshot. The bullet path shows an almost vertical direction on the right side of the individual's splanchno and neurocranium. The path of the projectile is consistent with a suicide attempt, although the possibility of a homicide simulating a suicide cannot be discarded. This case highlights how informative such cases can be to the practice of forensic anthropology

    rASUDAS: A New Web-Based Application for Estimating Ancestry from Tooth Morphology

    The use of crown and root morphology to estimate population relationships has a long history in dental anthropology. Over the past two decades, methods employing dental morphology within forensic anthropology have been formalized with the incorporation of statistical models. This paper presents a new web-based application (rASUDAS) that estimates the ancestry of unknown individuals based on their suite of tooth crown and root traits. The application utilizes 21 independent traits that were scored following the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASUDAS). The reference sample represents approximately 30,000 individuals from seven biogeographic regions. A naive Bayes classifier algorithm was created in the R open source programming language to assign posterior probabilities for individual group assignment. To test the application, 150 individuals were selected from the C. G. Turner II database with the proviso that an individual had to be scored for a minimum of 12 of the 21 traits. In a seven-group analysis, the model correctly assigned individuals to groups 51.8% of the time. In a four-group analysis, classification accuracy improved to 66.7%. With three groups, accuracy was at 72.7%. It is still necessary to validate the program using forensic cases and to augment the reference sample with modern skeletal data. However, results from the beta version of rASUDAS are presented as proof of concept on the potential of dental morphology in ancestry estimation in forensic contexts

    Model inference for spreadsheets

    Many errors in spreadsheet formulas can be avoided if spreadsheets are built automati- cally from higher-level models that can encode and enforce consistency constraints in the generated spreadsheets. Employing this strategy for legacy spreadsheets is dificult, because the model has to be reverse engineered from an existing spreadsheet and existing data must be transferred into the new model-generated spreadsheet. We have developed and implemented a technique that automatically infers relational schemas from spreadsheets. This technique uses particularities from the spreadsheet realm to create better schemas. We have evaluated this technique in two ways: First, we have demonstrated its appli- cability by using it on a set of real-world spreadsheets. Second, we have run an empirical study with users. The study has shown that the results produced by our technique are comparable to the ones developed by experts starting from the same (legacy) spreadsheet data. Although relational schemas are very useful to model data, they do not t well spreadsheets as they do not allow to express layout. Thus, we have also introduced a mapping between relational schemas and ClassSheets. A ClassSheet controls further changes to the spreadsheet and safeguards it against a large class of formula errors. The developed tool is a contribution to spreadsheet (reverse) engineering, because it lls an important gap and allows a promising design method (ClassSheets) to be applied to a huge collection of legacy spreadsheets with minimal effort.We would like to thank Orlando Belo for his help on running and analyzing the empirical study.     Magnésio – associação com inflamação e doença renal no lúpus eritematoso sistémico

    Introduction: Recent studies suggest that magnesium deficiency may play a role in inflammation. In diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases, conditions with a component of chronic inflammation, C–reactive protein levels are higher and associated with low serum magnesium. The objective of this study is to evaluate serum magnesium levels in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and its potential association with inflammation and renal manifestations. Methods: All patients with systemic lupus erythematosus followed in a Systemic Immune Diseases Unit, from January 2012 until January 2014, were included in this cross sectional analysis. Patients with infection, neoplasia, liver failure and chronic kidney disease (stage > 3) were excluded. Clinical information and laboratory results (serum magnesium, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum creatinine and spot urine test) were collected. A multivariate analysis was performed to explore possible predictive factors for hypomagnesaemia. Results: One hundred and two patients were included (94.1% female, 21-86 years). 33.4% had hypertension, 8.8% had diabetes and 20.6% had hypomagnesaemia (< 1.8mg/dL). There were no significant differences between the inflammatory parameters of patients with hypomagnesaemia or normomagnesaemia. Serum magnesium was significantly lower with increasing comorbidities (p = 0.01). Leukocyturia was significantly higher in the hypomagnesaemia group (p = 0.03) and haematuria had a negative correlation with serum magnesium (-0.23, p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that patients with hypertension and diabetes had higher risk of hypomagnesaemia: OR 42.29 (95% CI, 1.43-1249.31). Leukocyturia was also individually and independently associated with hypomagnesaemia: OR 8.37 (95% CI, 1.40-49.97). Conclusion: The presence of hypomagnesaemia in our patients with systemic lupus erythematosus was high. There was no association between the levels of serum magnesium and the inflammatory parameters. Increasing comorbidities and leukocyturia were independent predictors of lower serum magnesium. Finally, the association of leukocyturia and haematuria with lower serum magnesium may suggest a relationship with a higher disease activity.Introdução: Estudos recentes sugerem uma relação entre inflamação e défice de magnésio. Em doenças com inflamação crónica, como a diabetes e doenças cárdio-vasculares, os níveis séricos de proteína C-reativa são mais altos e associados a menores níveis séricos de magnésio. O objetivo desde trabalho é avaliar o magnésio sérico em doentes com lúpus eritematoso sistémico e a sua associação com inflamação e manifestações renais. Métodos: Foram incluídos neste estudo transversal, doentes com lúpus eritematoso sistémico, seguidos numa unidade de doenças imunomediadas sistémicas, entre Janeiro 2012 e Janeiro 2014. Foram excluídos os doentes com infeção, neoplasia, insuficiência hepática e doença renal crónica (estadio > 3). Foi colhida informação clínica e laboratorial (magnésio sérico, proteína C-reativa, velocidade de sedimentação, creatinina sérica e exame sumário de urina). Foi usada uma análise multivariada para explorar possíveis fatores preditivos de hipomagnesémia. Resultados: Foram incluídos 102 doentes (94.1% do sexo feminino, 21-86 anos), 33.4% com hipertensão, 8.8% com diabetes e 20.6% com hipomagnesémia (< 1.8mg/ dL). Não houve diferenças significativas nos parâmetros inflamatórios entre os doentes com hipomagnesémia e normomagnesémia. Os valores de magnésio foram mais baixos nos doentes com mais comorbilidades associadas (p = 0.01). A leucocitúria foi significativamente maior no grupo com hipomagnesémia (p = 0.03) e a hematúria correlacionou-se negativamente com o magnésio sérico (r = -0.23, p < 0.05). Na análise multivariada, doentes com hipertensão e diabetes apresentaram maior risco de hipomagnesemia: OR 42.29 (95% CI, 1.43-1249.31). A leucocitúria foi individualmente e independentemente associada a hipomagnesemia OR 8.37 (95% CI, 1.40-49.97). Conclusão: A presença de hipomagnesémia nos nossos doentes com lúpus eritematoso sistémico foi elevada. Não encontrámos associação entre os níveis de magnésio sérico e os parâmetros inflamatórios. A comorbilidade crescente e a leucocitúria foram preditores independentes de hipomagnesémia. A associação de leucocitúria e hematúria com magnésio sérico mais baixo pode sugerir uma relação com maior atividade da doença

    The holographic principle

    There is strong evidence that the area of any surface limits the information content of adjacent spacetime regions, at 10^(69) bits per square meter. We review the developments that have led to the recognition of this entropy bound, placing special emphasis on the quantum properties of black holes. The construction of light-sheets, which associate relevant spacetime regions to any given surface, is discussed in detail. We explain how the bound is tested and demonstrate its validity in a wide range of examples. A universal relation between geometry and information is thus uncovered. It has yet to be explained. The holographic principle asserts that its origin must lie in the number of fundamental degrees of freedom involved in a unified description of spacetime and matter. It must be manifest in an underlying quantum theory of gravity.     A four-dimensional {\Lambda}CDM-type cosmological model induced from higher dimensions using a kinematical constraint

    A class of cosmological solutions of higher dimensional Einstein field equations with the energy-momentum tensor of a homogeneous, isotropic fluid as the source are considered with an anisotropic metric that includes the direct sum of a 3-dimensional (physical, flat) external space metric and an n-dimensional (compact, flat) internal space metric. A simple kinematical constraint is postulated that correlates the expansion rates of the external and internal spaces in terms of a real parameter {\lambda}. A specific solution for which both the external and internal spaces expand at different rates is given analytically for n=3. Assuming that the internal dimensions were at Planck length scales when the external space starts with a Big Bang (t=0), they expand only 1.49 times and stay at Planck length scales even in the present age of the universe (13.7 Gyr). The effective four dimensional universe would exhibit a behavior consistent with our current understanding of the observed universe. It would start in a stiff fluid dominated phase and evolve through radiation dominated and pressureless matter dominated phases, eventually going into a de Sitter phase at late times.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures; matches the version published in General Relativity and Gravitatio

    Kerr-CFT From Black-Hole Thermodynamics

    We analyze the near-horizon limit of a general black hole with two commuting killing vector fields in the limit of zero temperature. We use black hole thermodynamics methods to relate asymptotic charges of the complete spacetime to those obtained in the near-horizon limit. We then show that some diffeomorphisms do alter asymptotic charges of the full spacetime, even though they are defined in the near horizon limit and, therefore, count black hole states. We show that these conditions are essentially the same as considered in the Kerr/CFT corresponcence. From the algebra constructed from these diffeomorphisms, one can extract its central charge and then obtain the black hole entropy by use of Cardy's formula.Comment: 19 pages, JHEP3, no figures.     The value of EBV DNA in early detection of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders among solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients

    PURPOSE: Emerging EBV DNAemia in plasma is considered an early sign of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD). The aim of this study was to quantify the extent of benefit from screening for EBV DNAemia to detect emerging PTLD among solid organ (SOT) or hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients (HSCT). METHODS: We used receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for assessing ability of models to predict PTLD. Among 2642 recipients transplanted between January 2004 and December 2014, 79 (3%) developed PTLD. RESULTS: EBV DNAemia was observed in 331/1784 recipients (18.6%, 95% CI 16.8-20.4) with measured EBV DNA. The area under the curve (AUC) of the ROC of EBV DNAemia to identify persons with subsequent PTLD was 72% (95% CI, 64-79%) among SOT and 59% (51-68%) among HSCT. Including clinical predictors such as age, gender, transplant year and type, high-risk EBV serostatus, and routine biochemistry in addition to EBV DNAemia increased AUC to 83% (75-90%) among SOT and 84% (79-89%) among HSCT. Among HSCT, including additional factors such as T-cell-depleting treatment, acute graft vs. host disease and donor match increased AUC to 85% (78-91%). CONCLUSIONS: We constructed a model to better predict PTLD compared to EBV DNA screening alone which could have clinical implications

    Matched pairs of human prostate stromal cells display differential tropic effects on LNCaP prostate cancer cells

    Prostate stromal cells may play binary roles in the process of prostate cancer development. As the first to be encountered by infiltrating prostate cancer cells, prostate stromal cells form the first defense line against prostate cancer progression and metastasis. However, interaction between prostate cancer and stromal cells may facilitate the formation of a tumor microenvironment favoring cancer cell growth and survival. To establish an experimental system for studying the interaction between cancer and stromal cells, we isolated three matched pairs of normal and cancer-associated human prostate stromal clones. In this report, we describe the morphologic and behavioral characteristics of these cells and their effect on LNCaP prostate cancer cells in co-culture. Unlike LNCaP prostate cancer cells, the isolated prostate stromal clones are large fibroblast-like cells with a slow proliferation rate. Growth and survival of these clones are not affected by androgens. The stromal cells display high resistance to serum starvation, while cancer-associated stromal clones have differentiated survival ability. In co-culture experiments, the stromal cells protected some LNCaP prostate cancer cells from death by serum starvation, and cancer-associated stromal clones showed more protection. This work thus established a panel of valuable human prostate stromal cell lines, which could be used in co-culture to study the interaction between prostate cancer and prostate stromal cells

    Hidden Conformal Symmetry of Extremal Kerr-Bolt Spacetimes

    We show that extremal Kerr-Bolt spacetimes have a hidden conformal symmetry. In this regard, we consider the wave equation of a massless scalar field propagating in extremal Kerr-Bolt spacetimes and find in the "near region", the wave equation in extremal limit can be written in terms of the SL(2,R)SL(2,R) quadratic Casimir. Moreover, we obtain the microscopic entropy of the extremal Kerr-Bolt spacetimes also we calculate the correlation function of a near-region scalar field and find perfect agreement with the dual 2D CFT.Comment: 13 page
