An analysis of risk factors for arterial hypertension in adolescent students
The objective of the study was to evaluate some risk factors for increases in systemic arterial blood pressure. This transversal study was carried out with 145 individuals from 12 to18 years of age at two state schools in the city of Pico in the state of Piauí in Brazil. The majority were female (62.8%). The median age was 14.8 years (±3.19). It was ascertained that 13 of the subjects (9.0%) were overweight [CI% 73.0-86.0]. Elevations in waist circumference were found in 31 (21.4%) and 76 (52.4%) had elevated arterial blood levels. There was no statistically-significant association between the above-cited risk factors and gender (p=0.088; 0.999; 0.204, respectively). However, 44.8% of the adolescents had at least one risk factor associated with arterial hypertension; 15.9% had two, and 2.1% had three. The study confirms the influence of the risk factors on arterial pressure values among adolescents. Being aware of these factors means that nurses can intervene with health education measures. PREVALENCE OF CHAGAS DISEASE AMONG BLOOD DONOR CANDIDATES IN TRIANGULO MINEIRO, MINAS GERAIS STATE, BRAZIL
Despite public health campaigns and epidemiological surveillance activities, Chagas disease remains a major health problem in Latin America. According to data from the World Health Organization, there are approximately 7-8 million people infected with Trypanosoma cruzi worldwide, a large percentage of which in Latin America. This study aims to examine the serological profile of blood donors in blood banks of Hemominas hematology center, in the town of Ituiutaba, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The study sample consisted of 53,941 blood donors, which were grouped according to gender and age. Sample collections were performed from January 1991 to December 2011, and 277 donors (0.5%) were considered serologically ineligible due to Chagas disease. Analysis of data showed no significant difference between genders. As for age, the highest proportion of ineligible donors was from 40 to 49 years (30%), and there was a positive correlation between increasing age and the percentage of patients seropositive for Chagas disease. Therefore, adopting strategies that allow the safe identification of donors with positive serology for Chagas disease is essential to reduce or eliminate indeterminate serological results
Effects of bromopride on the healing of left colon anastomoses of rats
Objective: To evaluate the effects of bromopride on the formation of adhesions and anastomotic healing in the left colon of rats.
Methods: We divided 40 rats into two groups of 20 animals, administration of bromopride (study group-E) or saline (control group-
C). Each group was divided into subgroups containing 10 animals each for euthanasia in the third (C3 and E3) or the seventh (E7 and
C7) postoperative days. The rats were submitted to section of the left colon and end-to-end anastomosis. On the day of reoperation,
we evaluated the total amount of adhesions and removed a colonic segment containing the anastomosis for histopathological
analysis, assessment of rupture strength and hydroxyproline concentration. Results: There was no difference between groups in
relation to clinical outcome. Two animals in the study group had blocked anastomotic leakage. The animals that received bromopride
had the number of intracavitary adhesions and adhesions to the anastomosis similar to the control group. The anastomoses from the
group E3 animals showed lower resistance to rupture the one from the C3 group (p = 0.04). This effect did not occur on the seventh
postoperative day (p = 0.37). There was no significant difference between groups in relation to histopathology and hydroxyproline
concentration in the anastomoses. Conclusion: The use of bromopride was associated with decreased tensile strength of left colon
anastomosis in rats in the third postoperative day
