Evidence of Andreev bound states as a hallmark of the FFLO phase in -(BEDT-TTF)Cu(NCS)
Superconductivity is a quantum phenomena arising, in its simplest form, from
pairing of fermions with opposite spin into a state with zero net momentum.
Whether superconductivity can occur in fermionic systems with unequal number of
two species distinguished by spin, atomic hyperfine states, flavor, presents an
important open question in condensed matter, cold atoms, and quantum
chromodynamics, physics. In the former case the imbalance between spin-up and
spin-down electrons forming the Cooper pairs is indyced by the magnetic field.
Nearly fifty years ago Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin and Ovchinnikov (FFLO) proposed
that such imbalanced system can lead to exotic superconductivity in which pairs
acquire finite momentum. The finite pair momentum leads to spatially
inhomogeneous state consisting of of a periodic alternation of "normal" and
"superconducting" regions. Here, we report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)
measurements providing microscopic evidence for the existence of this new
superconducting state through the observation of spin-polarized quasiparticles
forming so-called Andreev bound states.Comment: 6 pages, 5 fig
Supersymmetric top and bottom squark production at hadron colliders
The scalar partners of top and bottom quarks are expected to be the lightest
squarks in supersymmetric theories, with potentially large cross sections at
hadron colliders. We present predictions for the production of top and bottom
squarks at the Tevatron and the LHC, including next-to-leading order
corrections in supersymmetric QCD and the resummation of soft gluon emission at
next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. We discuss the impact of the higher-order
corrections on total cross sections and transverse-momentum distributions, and
provide an estimate of the theoretical uncertainty due to scale variation and

Gaugino production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV
Motivated by hints for a light Standard Model-like Higgs boson and a shift in
experimental attention towards electroweak supersymmetry particle production at
the CERN LHC, we update in this paper our precision predictions at
next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD matched to resummation at the
next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy for direct gaugino pair production in
proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Tables of total
cross sections are presented together with the corresponding scale and parton
density uncertainties for benchmark points adopted recently by the experimental
collaborations, and figures are presented for up-to-date model lines attached
to them. Since the experimental analyses are currently obtained with parton
showers matched to multi-parton matrix elements, we also analyze the precision
of this procedure by comparing invariant-mass and transverse-momentum
distributions obtained in this way to those obtained with threshold and

Southeast Asian diversity: first insights into the complex mtDNA structure of Laos
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Vast migrations and subsequent assimilation processes have shaped the genetic composition of Southeast Asia, an area of close contact between several major ethnic groups. To better characterize the genetic variation of this region, we analyzed the entire mtDNA control region of 214 unrelated donors from Laos according to highest forensic quality standards. To detail the phylogeny, we inspected selected SNPs from the mtDNA coding region. For <it>a posteriori </it>data quality control, quasi-median network constructions and autosomal STR typing were performed. In order to describe the mtDNA setup of Laos more thoroughly, the data were subjected to population genetic comparisons with 16 East Asian groups.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The Laos sample exhibited ample mtDNA diversity, reflecting the huge number of ethnic groups listed. We found several new, so far undescribed mtDNA lineages in this dataset and surrounding populations. The Laos population was characteristic in terms of haplotype composition and genetic structure, however, genetic comparisons with other Southeast Asian populations revealed limited, but significant genetic differentiation. Notable differences in the maternal relationship to the major indigenous Southeast Asian ethnolinguistic groups were detected.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In this study, we portray the great mtDNA variety of Laos for the first time. Our findings will contribute to clarify the migration history of the region. They encourage setting up regional and subpopulation databases, especially for forensic applications. The Laotian sequences will be incorporated into the collaborative EMPOP mtDNA database <url>http://www.empop.org</url> upon publication and will be available as the first mtDNA reference data for this country.</p
Forensic age diagnostics by magnetic resonance imaging of the proximal humeral epiphysis
The most commonly used radiological method for age estimation of living individuals is X-ray. Computed tomography is not commonly used due to high radiation exposure, which raises ethical concerns. This problem can be solved with the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which avoids the use of ionizing radiation. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the utility of MRI analysis of the proximal humeral epiphyses for forensic age estimations of living individuals. In this study, 395 left proximal humeral epiphyses (patient age 12-30years) were evaluated with fast-spin-echo proton density-weighted image (FSE PD) sequences in a coronal oblique orientation on shoulder MRI images. A five-stage scoring system was used following the method of Dedouit et al. The intra- and interobserver reliabilities assessed using Cohen's kappa statistic were =0.818 and =0.798, respectively. According to this study, stage five first appeared at 20 and 21years of age in males and females, respectively. These results are not directly comparable to any other published study due to the lack of MRI data on proximal humeral head development. These findings may provide valuable information for legally important age thresholds using shoulder MRI. The current study demonstrates that MRI of the proximal humerus can support forensic age estimation. Further research is needed to establish a standardized protocol that can be applied worldwide

Three-year randomised clinical trial to evaluate the clinical performance, quantitative and qualitative wear patterns of hybrid composite restorations
The aim of the study was to compare the clinical performance, quantitative and qualitative wear patterns of conventional hybrid (Tetric Ceram), micro-filled hybrid (Gradia Direct Posterior) and nano-hybrid (Tetric EvoCeram, TEC) posterior composite restorations in a 3-year randomised clinical trial. Sixteen Tetric Ceram, 17 TEC and 16 Gradia Direct Posterior restorations were placed in human molars and evaluated at baseline, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months of clinical service according to US Public Health Service criteria. The gypsum replicas at each recall were used for 3D laser scanning to quantify wear, and the epoxy resin replicas were observed under scanning electron microscope to study the qualitative wear patterns. After 3 years of clinical service, the three hybrid restorative materials performed clinically well in posterior cavities. Within the observation period, the nano-hybrid and micro-hybrid restorations evolved better in polishability with improved surface gloss retention than the conventional hybrid counterpart. The three hybrid composites showed enamel-like vertical wear and cavity-size dependant volume loss magnitude. Qualitatively, while the micro-filled and nano-hybrid composite restorations exhibited signs of fatigue similar to the conventional hybrid composite restorations at heavy occlusal contact area, their light occlusal contact areas showed less surface pitting after 3 years of clinical service
Bayesian probabilistic network modeling from multiple independent replicates
Often protein (or gene) time-course data are collected for multiple replicates. Each replicate generally has sparse data with the number of time points being less than the number of proteins. Usually each replicate is modeled separately. However, here all the information in each of the replicates is used to make a composite inference about signal networks. The composite inference comes from combining well structured Bayesian probabilistic modeling with a multi-faceted Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Based on simulations which investigate many different types of network interactions and experimental variabilities, the composite examination uncovers many important relationships within the networks. In particular, when the edge's partial correlation between two proteins is at least moderate, then the composite's posterior probability is large
