Doing good by doing nothing? The role of social norms in explaining default effects in altruistic contexts
We explore whether the known preference for default options in choice contextsâdefault effectsâoccur in altruistic contexts and the extent to which this can be explained through appeal to social norms. In four experiments, we found that (i) participants were more likely to donate money to charity when this was the default option in an altruistic choice context; (ii) participants perceived the default option to be the socially normative option; (iii) perceptions of social norms mediated the relationship between default status and charitable donations; and (iv) a transfer effect, whereby participants translated social norms they inferred from the default option in one domain into behavior in a second, related domain. Theoretically, our analysis situates default effects within a comprehensive body of social psychological research concerning social norms and the attitudeâbehavior relationship, providing novel empirical predictions. Practically, these findings highlight that the way donation policies are framed can have an important impact on donation behavior: in our third study, we found that 81% donated half of their earnings for taking part in the experiment to charity when this was the default option, compared with only 19% when keeping the money was the default. Evaluating estuarine nursery use and life history patterns of Pomatomus saltatrix in eastern Australia
Estuaries provide important nursery habitats for juvenile fish, but many species move between estuarine and coastal habitats throughout their life. We used otolith chemistry to evaluate the use of estuaries and the coastal marine environment by juvenile Pomatomus saltatrix in eastern Australia. Otolith chemical signatures of juveniles from 12 estuaries, spanning 10° of latitude, were characterised using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Based upon multivariate otolith elemental signatures, fish collected from most estuaries could not be successfully discriminated from one another. This was attributed to the varying influence of marine water on otolith elemental composition in fish from all estuaries. Using a reduced number of estuarine groups, the multivariate juvenile otolith elemental signatures and univariate Sr:Ca ratio suggest that between 24 and 52% of adult P. saltatrix had a juvenile period influenced by the marine environment. Elemental profiles across adult (age-1) otoliths highlighted a variety of life history patterns, not all consistent with a juvenile estuarine phase. Furthermore, the presence of age-0 juveniles in coastal waters was confirmed from historical length-frequency data from coastal trawls. Combining multiple lines of evidence suggests considerable plasticity in juvenile life history for P. saltatrix in eastern Australia through their utilisation of both estuarine and coastal nurseries. Mitotic phosphorylation activates hepatoma-derived growth factor as a mitogen
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hepatoma-derived growth factor (HDGF) is a nuclear protein that is a mitogen for a wide variety of cells. Mass spectrometry based methods have identified HDGF as a phosphoprotein without validation or a functional consequence of this post-translational modification.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that HDGF in primary mouse aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) was phosphorylated. Wild type HDGF was phosphorylated in asynchronous cells and substitution of S103, S165 and S202 to alanine each demonstrated a decrease in HDGF phosphorylation. A phospho-S103 HDGF specific antibody was developed and demonstrated mitosis-specific phosphorylation. HDGF-S103A was not mitogenic and FACS analysis demonstrated a G2/M arrest in HDGF-S103A expressing cells, whereas cells expressing HDGF-S103D showed cell cycle progression. Nocodazole arrest increased S103 phosphorylation from 1.6% to 29% (P = 0.037).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Thus, HDGF is a phosphoprotein and phosphorylation of S103 is mitosis related and required for its function as a mitogen. We speculate that cell cycle regulated phosphorylation of HDGF may play an important role in vascular cell proliferation.</p
Causarum Investigatio and the Two Bell's Theorems of John Bell
"Bell's theorem" can refer to two different theorems that John Bell proved,
the first in 1964 and the second in 1976. His 1964 theorem is the
incompatibility of quantum phenomena with the joint assumptions of Locality and
Predetermination. His 1976 theorem is their incompatibility with the single
property of Local Causality. This is contrary to Bell's own later assertions,
that his 1964 theorem began with the assumption of Local Causality, even if not
by that name. Although the two Bell's theorems are logically equivalent, their
assumptions are not. Hence, the earlier and later theorems suggest quite
different conclusions, embraced by operationalists and realists, respectively.
The key issue is whether Locality or Local Causality is the appropriate notion
emanating from Relativistic Causality, and this rests on one's basic notion of
causation. For operationalists the appropriate notion is what is here called
the Principle of Agent-Causation, while for realists it is Reichenbach's
Principle of common cause. By breaking down the latter into even more basic
Postulates, it is possible to obtain a version of Bell's theorem in which each
camp could reject one assumption, happy that the remaining assumptions reflect
its weltanschauung. Formulating Bell's theorem in terms of causation is
fruitful not just for attempting to reconcile the two camps, but also for
better describing the ontology of different quantum interpretations and for

Phenomenological Implications of Deflected Mirage Mediation: Comparison with Mirage Mediation
We compare the collider phenomenology of mirage mediation and deflected
mirage mediation, which are two recently proposed "mixed" supersymmetry
breaking scenarios motivated from string compactifications. The scenarios
differ in that deflected mirage mediation includes contributions from gauge
mediation in addition to the contributions from gravity mediation and anomaly
mediation also present in mirage mediation. The threshold effects from gauge
mediation can drastically alter the low energy spectrum from that of pure
mirage mediation models, resulting in some cases in a squeezed gaugino spectrum
and a gluino that is much lighter than other colored superpartners. We provide
several benchmark deflected mirage mediation models and construct model lines
as a function of the gauge mediation contributions, and discuss their discovery

The Herpesvirus Associated Ubiquitin Specific Protease, USP7, Is a Negative Regulator of PML Proteins and PML Nuclear Bodies
The PML tumor suppressor is the founding component of the multiprotein nuclear structures known as PML nuclear bodies (PML-NBs), which control several cellular functions including apoptosis and antiviral effects. The ubiquitin specific protease USP7 (also called HAUSP) is known to associate with PML-NBs and to be a tight binding partner of two herpesvirus proteins that disrupt PML NBs. Here we investigated whether USP7 itself regulates PML-NBs. Silencing of USP7 was found to increase the number of PML-NBs, to increase the levels of PML protein and to inhibit PML polyubiquitylation in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. This effect of USP7 was independent of p53 as PML loss was observed in p53-null cells. PML-NBs disruption was induced by USP7 overexpression independently of its catalytic activity and was induced by either of the protein interaction domains of USP7, each of which localized to PML-NBs. USP7 also disrupted NBs formed from some single PML isoforms, most notably isoforms I and IV. CK2α and RNF4, which are known regulators of PML, were dispensable for USP7-associated PML-NB disruption. The results are consistent with a novel model of PML regulation where a deubiquitylase disrupts PML-NBs through recruitment of another cellular protein(s) to PML NBs, independently of its catalytic activity
Genome-Wide Screen of Three Herpesviruses for Protein Subcellular Localization and Alteration of PML Nuclear Bodies
Herpesviruses are large, ubiquitous DNA viruses with complex host interactions, yet many of the proteins encoded by these viruses have not been functionally characterized. As a first step in functional characterization, we determined the subcellular localization of 234 epitope-tagged proteins from herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, and EpsteinâBarr virus. Twenty-four of the 93 proteins with nuclear localization formed subnuclear structures. Twelve of these localized to the nucleolus, and five at least partially localized with promyelocytic leukemia (PML) bodies, which are known to suppress viral lytic infection. In addition, two proteins disrupted Cajal bodies, and 19 of the nuclear proteins significantly decreased the number of PML bodies per cell, including six that were shown to be SUMO-modified. These results have provided the first functional insights into over 120 previously unstudied proteins and suggest that herpesviruses employ multiple strategies for manipulating nuclear bodies that control key cellular processes
Bell Correlations and the Common Future
Reichenbach's principle states that in a causal structure, correlations of
classical information can stem from a common cause in the common past or a
direct influence from one of the events in correlation to the other. The
difficulty of explaining Bell correlations through a mechanism in that spirit
can be read as questioning either the principle or even its basis: causality.
In the former case, the principle can be replaced by its quantum version,
accepting as a common cause an entangled state, leaving the phenomenon as
mysterious as ever on the classical level (on which, after all, it occurs). If,
more radically, the causal structure is questioned in principle, closed
space-time curves may become possible that, as is argued in the present note,
can give rise to non-local correlations if to-be-correlated pieces of classical
information meet in the common future --- which they need to if the correlation
is to be detected in the first place. The result is a view resembling Brassard
and Raymond-Robichaud's parallel-lives variant of Hermann's and Everett's

Loss of KCNJ10 protein expression abolishes endocochlear potential and causes deafness in Pendred syndrome mouse model
BACKGROUND: Pendred syndrome, a common autosomal-recessive disorder characterized by congenital deafness and goiter, is caused by mutations of SLC26A4, which codes for pendrin. We investigated the relationship between pendrin and deafness using mice that have (Slc26a4(+/+)) or lack a complete Slc26a4 gene (Slc26a4(-/-)). METHODS: Expression of pendrin and other proteins was determined by confocal immunocytochemistry. Expression of mRNA was determined by quantitative RT-PCR. The endocochlear potential and the endolymphatic K(+ )concentration were measured with double-barreled microelectrodes. Currents generated by the stria marginal cells were recorded with a vibrating probe. Tissue masses were evaluated by morphometric distance measurements and pigmentation was quantified by densitometry. RESULTS: Pendrin was found in the cochlea in apical membranes of spiral prominence cells and spindle-shaped cells of stria vascularis, in outer sulcus and root cells. Endolymph volume in Slc26a4(-/- )mice was increased and tissue masses in areas normally occupied by type I and II fibrocytes were reduced. Slc26a4(-/- )mice lacked the endocochlear potential, which is generated across the basal cell barrier by the K(+ )channel KCNJ10 localized in intermediate cells. Stria vascularis was hyperpigmented, suggesting unalleviated free radical damage. The basal cell barrier appeared intact; intermediate cells and KCNJ10 mRNA were present but KCNJ10 protein was absent. Endolymphatic K(+ )concentrations were normal and membrane proteins necessary for K(+ )secretion were present, including the K(+ )channel KCNQ1 and KCNE1, Na(+)/2Cl(-)/K(+ )cotransporter SLC12A2 and the gap junction GJB2. CONCLUSIONS: These observations demonstrate that pendrin dysfunction leads to a loss of KCNJ10 protein expression and a loss of the endocochlear potential, which may be the direct cause of deafness in Pendred syndrome
