Measurement of Trace I-129 Concentrations in CsI Powder and Organic Liquid Scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
Levels of trace radiopurity in active detector materials is a subject of
major concern in low-background experiments. Procedures were devised to measure
trace concentrations of I-129 in the inorganic salt CsI as well as in organic
liquid scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) which leads to
improvement in sensitivities by several orders of magnitude over other methods.
No evidence of their existence in these materials were observed. Limits of < 6
X 10^{-13} g/g and < 2.6 X 10^{-17} g/g on the contaminations of I-129 in CsI
and liquid scintillator, respectively, were derived. These are the first results
in a research program whose goals are to develop techniques to measure trace
radioactivity in detector materials by AMS.Comment: Proceedings of 10th International Conference on Accelerator Mass

Direct amplification of nodD from community DNA reveals the genetic diversity of Rhizobium leguminosarum in soil
Sequences of nodD, a gene found only in rhizobia, were amplified from total community DNA isolated from a pasture soil. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers used, Y5 and Y6, match nodD from Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii, R. leguminosarum biovar viciae and Sinorhizobium meliloti. The PCR product was cloned and yielded 68 clones that were identified by restriction pattern as derived from biovar trifolii [11 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) types] and 15 clones identified as viciae (seven RFLP types). These identifications were confirmed by sequencing. There were no clones related to S. meliloti nodD. For comparison, 122 strains were isolated from nodules of white clover (Trifolium repens) growing at the field site, and 134 from nodules on trap plants of T. repens inoculated with the soil. The nodule isolates were of four nodD RFLP types, with 77% being of a single type. All four of these patterns were also found among the clones from soil DNA, and the same type was the most abundant, although it made up only 34% of the trifolii-like clones. We conclude that clover selects specific genotypes from the available soil population, and that R. leguminosarum biovar trifolii was approximately five times more abundant than biovar viciae in this pasture soil, whereas S. meliloti was rare
Prosemantic features for content-based image retrieval
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-18449-9_8Revised Selected Papers of 7th International Workshop, AMR 2009, Madrid, Spain, September 24-25, 2009We present here, an image description approach based on prosemantic features. The images are represented by a set of low-level features related to their structure and color distribution. Those descriptions are fed to a battery of image classifiers trained to evaluate the membership of the images with respect to a set of 14 overlapping classes. Prosemantic features are obtained by packing together the scores. To verify the effectiveness of the approach, we designed a target search experiment in which both low-level and prosemantic features are embedded into a content-based image retrieval system exploiting relevance feedback. The experiments show that the use of prosemantic features allows for a more successful and quick retrieval of the query images
Small-polaron hopping conductivity in bilayer manganite LaSrMnO
We report anisotropic resistivity measurements on a
LaSrMnO single crystal over a temperature range
from 2 to 400 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. For K, the
temperature dependence of the zero-field in-plane resistivity
obeys the adiabatic small polaron hopping mechanism, while the out-of-plane
resistivity can be ascribed by an Arrhenius law with the same
activation energy. Considering the magnetic character of the polarons and the
close correlation between the resistivity and magnetization, we developed a
model which allows the determination of . The excellent
agreement of the calculations with the measurements indicates that small
polarons play an essential role in the electrical transport properties in the
paramagnetic phase of bilayer manganites.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Physical Review
Probing unparticle theory via lepton flavor violating process at BESIII
The lepton flavor violating process serves as an
ideal place to probe the unparticle theory. Such process can only occur at loop
level in the Standard model (SM), so that should be very suppressed, by
contrast in unparticle scenario, it happens at tree level and its contribution
may be sizable for practical measurement. Moreover, the BESIII will offer the
largest database on which makes more accurate measurements possible.
Furthermore, for such purely leptonic decays background is relatively low and
signal would be cleaner. Our work carefully investigates the possibility of
observing such processes from both theoretical and experimental aspects.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, revised version for publicatio

Direct Measurements of the Branching Fractions for and and Determinations of the Form Factors and
The absolute branching fractions for the decays and
are determined using singly
tagged sample from the data collected around 3.773 GeV with the
BES-II detector at the BEPC. In the system recoiling against the singly tagged
meson, events for and events for decays are observed. Those yield
the absolute branching fractions to be and . The
vector form factors are determined to be
and . The ratio of the two form
factors is measured to be .Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Measurements of J/psi Decays into 2(pi+pi-)eta and 3(pi+pi-)eta
Based on a sample of 5.8X 10^7 J/psi events taken with the BESII detector,
the branching fractions of J/psi--> 2(pi+pi-)eta and J/psi-->3(pi+pi-)eta are
measured for the first time to be (2.26+-0.08+-0.27)X10^{-3} and
(7.24+-0.96+-1.11)X10^{-4}, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Measurements of decays into Vector- Tensor final states
Decays of the into vector plus tensor meson final states have been
studied with 14 million events collected with the BESII detector.
Branching fractions of \psi(2S) \rt \omega f_{2}(1270), ,

determined. They improve upon previous BESI results and confirm the violation
of the "12%" rule for decays to VT channels with higher precision.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures and 2 table
