Structure formation in binary colloids
A theoretical study of the structure formation observed very recently [Phys.
Rev. Lett. 90, 128303 (2003)] in binary colloids is presented. In our model
solely the dipole-dipole interaction of the particles is considered,
electrohidrodynamic effects are excluded. Based on molecular dynamics
simulations and analytic calculations we show that the total concentration of
the particles, the relative concentration and the relative dipole moment of the
components determine the structure of the colloid. At low concentrations the
kinetic aggregation of particles results in fractal structures which show a
crossover behavior when increasing the concentration. At high concentration
various lattice structures are obtained in a good agreement with experiments.Comment: revtex, 4 pages, figures available from authors due to size problem
POSTURAL STABILITY PERFORMANCE BETWEEN SEDENTARY AND ACTIVE SUBJECTS WITH THE BIODEX STABILITY SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION: Postural stability (PS) has been defined as the ability to maintain an upright posture within the base of support (Lee and Lin, 2007) and is considered to be an important indicator of musculoskeletal health and physical performance. This study examined the PS performance between sedentary and active subjects using the Biodex Balance System (BBS) with well intraclass correlation coefficient (Hinman, 2000)
Influence of Carbon Concentration on the Superconductivity in MgCxNi3
The influence of carbon concentration on the superconductivity (SC) in
MgCNi has been investigated by measuring the low temperature specific
heat combined with first principles electronic structure calculation. It is
found that the specific heat coefficient of the
superconducting sample () in normal state is twice that of the
non-superconducting one (). The comparison of measured
and the calculated electronic density of states (DOS) shows that the
effective mass renormalization changes remarkably as the carbon concentration
changes. The large mass renormalization for the superconducting sample and the
low (7K) indicate that more than one kind of boson mediated
electron-electron interactions exist in MgCNi.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Cyclic Alopecia and Abnormal Epidermal Cornification in Zdhhc13-Deficient Mice Reveal the Importance of Palmitoylation in Hair and Skin Differentiation
Many biochemical pathways involved in hair and skin development have not been investigated. Here, we reported on the lesions and investigated the mechanism underlying hair and skin abnormalities in Zdhhc13skc4 mice with a deficiency in DHHC13, a palmitoyl-acyl transferase encoded by Zdhhc13. Homozygous affected mice showed ragged and dilapidated cuticle of the hair shaft (CUH, a hair anchoring structure), poor hair anchoring ability, and premature hair loss at early telogen phase of the hair cycle, resulting in cyclic alopecia. Furthermore, the homozygous affected mice exhibited hyperproliferation of the epidermis, disturbed cornification, fragile cornified envelope (CE, a skin barrier structure), and impaired skin barrier function. Biochemical investigations revealed that cornifelin, which contains five palmitoylation sites at cysteine residues (C58, C59, C60, C95, and C101), was a specific substrate of DHHC13 and that it was absent in the CUH and CE structures of the affected mice. Furthermore, cornifelin levels were markedly reduced when two palmitoylated cysteines were replaced with serine (C95S and C101S). Taken together, our results suggest that DHHC13 is important for hair anchoring and skin barrier function and that cornifelin deficiency contributes to cyclic alopecia and skin abnormalities in Zdhhc13skc4 mice
Anomaly analysis of Hawking radiation from Kaluza-Klein black hole with squashed horizon
Considering gravitational and gauge anomalies at the horizon, a new method
that to derive Hawking radiations from black holes has been developed by
Wilczek et al. In this paper, we apply this method to non-rotating and rotating
Kaluza-Klein black holes with squashed horizon, respectively. For the rotating
case, we found that, after the dimensional reduction, an effective U(1) gauge
field is generated by an angular isometry. The results show that the gauge
current and energy-momentum tensor fluxes are exactly equivalent to Hawking
radiation from the event horizon.Comment: 15 pages, no figures, the improved version, accepted by Eur. Phys. J.
PD-1 blockade in recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer: Data from cemiplimab phase I expansion cohorts and characterization of PD-L1 expression in cervical cancer
Objectives: To characterize the safety, tolerability, and anti-tumor activity of cemiplimab as monotherapy or in combination with hypofractionated radiation therapy (hfRT) in patients with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer. To determine the association between histology and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression.
Methods: In non-randomized phase I expansion cohorts, patients (squamous or non-squamous histology) received cemiplimab 3 mg/kg intravenously every 2 weeks for 48 weeks, either alone (monotherapy cohort) or with hfRT during week 2 (combination cohort). Due to insufficient tissue material, PD-L1 protein expression was evaluated in commercially purchased samples and mRNA expression levels were analyzed from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA).
Results: Twenty patients enrolled in both cohorts in total; 10 had squamous histology. The most common adverse events of any grade were diarrhea, fatigue, and hypokalemia, occurring in 35%, 25%, and 25%, respectively. Objective response rate was 10% in each cohort; responders had squamous histology. Duration of response was 11.2 months and 6.4 months for the responder in the monotherapy and combination cohort, respectively. Irradiated lesions were not included in the response assessments. In separate archived specimens (N = 155), PD-L1 protein expression in tumor and immune cells was negative (<1%) more commonly in adenocarcinoma than in squamous tumors. PD-L1 mRNA levels were lower in adenocarcinoma than squamous cell tumors (1.2 vs 5.0 mean transcripts per million, respectively) in TCGA.
Conclusions: Cemiplimab has activity in cervical squamous cell carcinoma. The phase I results, combined with results from other anti-PD-1 trials in cervical cancer and our biomarker analyses have informed the design of the ongoing phase III trial, with the primary overall survival hierarchical analyses being done first in patients with squamous histology
