    Wake Vortex Pair Formation as an Analog for Dust Devil and Tornado Genesis

    In 1966, meteorologist R.S. Scorer attempted to explain how large-scale oceanic tropical depressions become hurricanes or typhoons. His model was based on the idea that when these large-scale tropical depression structures begin to rotate, mostly due to Coriolis effects, an annular outer portion of that structure changes suddenly to a potential vortex segment, with the same outer radial limit as the low-pressure structure, but with an inner radius that conserves the overall system angular momentum and kinetic energy. By analogy with the jump instability describing sudden buckling of a vertical column, this paper shows that his conjecture merits additional consideration. If valid, the Scorer model implies that the controlling large scale flow is essentially an inviscid Rankine vortex. While hurricanes can sustain this Rankine vortex eye structure over warm ocean, over land smaller-scale tornadoes and dust devils cannot draw from a similar sustaining energy source. Scorer\u27s model implies that, without additional energy, the outer inviscid vortex region should force the rotating inner cylindrical region to collapse as the overall inviscid structure proceeds toward the rotational axis. That vortex evolution requires additional energy- from an unknown source. This paper utilizes Scorer\u27s finite vortex domain hypothesis on an evolving aircraft wake vortex pair, and his assertion that the inviscid vortex pair is the controlling flow, to generate turbulent non-equilibrium vortex cores and by extension explain how tornadoes and dust devils form from rotating atmosphere

    Fractional Klein-Kramers equation for superdiffusive transport: normal versus anomalous time evolution in a differential L{\'e}vy walk model

    We introduce a fractional Klein-Kramers equation which describes sub-ballistic superdiffusion in phase space in the presence of a space-dependent external force field. This equation defines the differential L{\'e}vy walk model whose solution is shown to be non-negative. In the velocity coordinate, the probability density relaxes in Mittag-Leffler fashion towards the Maxwell distribution whereas in the space coordinate, no stationary solution exists and the temporal evolution of moments exhibits a competition between Brownian and anomalous contributions.Comment: 4 pages, REVTe

    Observer weighting of interaural cues in positive and negative envelope slopes of amplitude-modulated waveforms

    The auditory system can encode interaural delays in highpass-filtered complex sounds by phase locking to their slowly modulating envelopes. Spectrotemporal analysis of interaurally time-delayed highpass waveforms reveals the presence of a concomitant interaural level cue. The current study systematically investigated the contribution of time and concomitant level cues carried by positive and negative envelope slopes of a modified sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) high-frequency carrier. The waveforms were generated from concatenation of individual modulation cycles whose envelope peaks were extended by the desired interaural delay, allowing independent control of delays in the positive and negative modulation slopes. In experiment 1, thresholds were measured using a 2-interval forced-choice adaptive task for interaural delays in either the positive or negative modulation slopes. In a control condition, thresholds were measured for a standard SAM tone. In experiment 2, decision weights were estimated using a multiple-observation correlational method in a single-interval forced-choice task for interaural delays carried simultaneously by the positive, and independently, negative slopes of the modulation envelope. In experiment 3, decision weights were measured for groups of 3 modulation cycles at the start, middle, and end of the waveform to determine the influence of onset dominance or recency effects. Results were consistent across experiments: thresholds were equal for the positive and negative modulation slopes. Decision weights were positive and equal for the time cue in the positive and negative envelope slopes. Weights were also larger for modulations cycles near the waveform onset. Weights estimated for the concomitant interaural level cue were positive for the positive envelope slope and negative for the negative slope, consistent with exclusive use of time cues.We thank Virginia M.     Rho GTPase function in flies: insights from a developmental and organismal perspective.

    Morphogenesis is a key event in the development of a multicellular organism and is reliant on coordinated transcriptional and signal transduction events. To establish the segmented body plan that underlies much of metazoan development, individual cells and groups of cells must respond to exogenous signals with complex movements and shape changes. One class of proteins that plays a pivotal role in the interpretation of extracellular cues into cellular behavior is the Rho family of small GTPases. These molecular switches are essential components of a growing number of signaling pathways, many of which regulate actin cytoskeletal remodeling. Much of our understanding of Rho biology has come from work done in cell culture. More recently, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has emerged as an excellent genetic system for the study of these proteins in a developmental and organismal context. Studies in flies have greatly enhanced our understanding of pathways involving Rho GTPases and their roles in development

    Physically Similar Systems - A History of the Concept

    PreprintThe concept of similar systems arose in physics, and appears to have originated with Newton in the seventeenth century. This chapter provides a critical history of the concept of physically similar systems, the twentieth century concept into which it developed. The concept was used in the nineteenth century in various fields of engineering (Froude, Bertrand, Reech), theoretical physics (van der Waals, Onnes, Lorentz, Maxwell, Boltzmann) and theoretical and experimental hydrodynamics (Stokes, Helmholtz, Reynolds, Prandtl, Rayleigh). In 1914, it was articulated in terms of ideas developed in the eighteenth century and used in nineteenth century mathematics and mechanics: equations, functions and dimensional analysis. The terminology physically similar systems was proposed for this new characterization of similar systems by the physicist Edgar Buckingham. Related work by Vaschy, Bertrand, and Riabouchinsky had appeared by then. The concept is very powerful in studying physical phenomena both theoretically and experimentally. As it is not currently part of the core curricula of STEM disciplines or philosophy of science, it is not as well known as it ought to be

    The role of geochemical baselines in the assessment of land quality

    In the light of recent European and UK government legislation there is a need to identify and quantify the potential hazard of contaminated land. Previous attempts to define ‘safe levels’ of Potentially Harmful Elements and Species (PHES) have proved to be less than satisfactory. For example, when the Council of European Communities (CEC) guideline for nickel was applied to regional geochemical baseline data in Finland, extensive areas of the north-west of the country were designated as contaminated it spite of their being little evidence of harm to the indigenous population or environment. In the UK, many areas containing high concentrations (i.e. above the Inter-governmental Committee on Redevelopment of Contaminated Land trigger values) of PHES have been identified. There is a clear role for geochemical baselines in assessing and revising these guidelines, and in the assessment of their potential economic impact
