Cosmological models with linearly varying deceleration parameter
We propose a new law for the deceleration parameter that varies linearly with
time and covers Berman's law where it is constant. Our law not only allows one
to generalize many exact solutions that were obtained assuming constant
deceleration parameter, but also gives a better fit with data (from SNIa, BAO
and CMB), particularly concerning the late time behavior of the universe.
According to our law only the spatially closed and flat universes are allowed;
in both cases the cosmological fluid we obtain exhibits quintom like behavior
and the universe ends with a big-rip. This is a result consistent with recent
cosmological observations.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures; some typo corrections; to appear in

A Comparison of the LVDP and {\Lambda}CDM Cosmological Models
We compare the cosmological kinematics obtained via our law of linearly
varying deceleration parameter (LVDP) with the kinematics obtained in the
{\Lambda}CDM model. We show that the LVDP model is almost indistinguishable
from the {\Lambda}CDM model up to the near future of our universe as far as the
current observations are concerned, though their predictions differ
tremendously into the far future.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, matches the version to be published in

Malocclusion and dental appearance in underprivileged brazilian adolescents
Satisfaction with dental aesthetics is a subjective indicator used in epidemiological studies and is related to health behaviours. Little is known about the factors that influence this indicator, particularly among adolescents who live in a situation of social vulnerability. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between malocclusion and dental appearance in underprivileged Brazilian adolescents. This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in Piracicaba, Brazil, and evaluated 884 adolescents from 13 to 19 years of age. The dependent variable was satisfaction with dental appearance, and the independent variables were classified as individual (components of the Dental Aesthetic Index - DAI, sex and age) and contextual (social exclusion index). For statistical analysis, multilevel regression models were estimated. The individual variables were considered Level 1, and the contextual variable was considered Level 2, with a level of significance of 5%. The mean age of the adolescents was 15.3 years. Female adolescents more frequently affirmed that they were satisfied with their dental appearance than did male individuals. There was an increase in dissatisfaction with oral health with the increase in anterior maxillary overjet, midline diastema, larger anterior irregularity in the maxilla, larger anterior irregularity in the mandible, anterior open bite and antero-posterior molar relation. Satisfaction with dental appearance was associated with individual factors such as sex and DAI components33CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQ141654/2013-
Nonsingular FRW cosmology and nonlinear electrodynamics
The possibility to avoid the cosmic initial singularity as a consequence of
nonlinear effects on the Maxwell eletromagnetic theory is discussed. For a flat
FRW geometry we derive the general nonsingular solution supported by a magnetic
field plus a cosmic fluid and a nonvanishing vacuum energy density. The
nonsingular behavior of solutions with a time-dependent -term are
also examined. As a general result, it is found that the functional dependence
of can uniquely be determined only if the magnetic field remains
constant. All these models are examples of bouncing universes which may exhibit
an inflationary dynamics driven by the nonlinear corrections of the magnetic
field.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
Bayesian Analysis and Constraints on Kinematic Models from Union SNIa
The kinematic expansion history of the universe is investigated by using the
307 supernovae type Ia from the Union Compilation set. Three simple model
parameterizations for the deceleration parameter (constant, linear and abrupt
transition) and two different models that are explicitly parametrized by the
cosmic jerk parameter (constant and variable) are considered. Likelihood and
Bayesian analyses are employed to find best fit parameters and compare models
among themselves and with the flat CDM model. Analytical expressions
and estimates for the deceleration and cosmic jerk parameters today ( and
) and for the transition redshift () between a past phase of cosmic
deceleration to a current phase of acceleration are given. All models
characterize an accelerated expansion for the universe today and largely
indicate that it was decelerating in the past, having a transition redshift
around 0.5. The cosmic jerk is not strongly constrained by the present
supernovae data. For the most realistic kinematic models the
confidence limits imply the following ranges of values: ,
and , which are compatible with the
CDM predictions, , and .
We find that even very simple kinematic models are equally good to describe the
data compared to the concordance CDM model, and that the current
observations are not powerful enough to discriminate among all of them.Comment: 13 pages. Matches published versio

Constraining the dark energy with galaxy clusters X-ray data
The equation of state characterizing the dark energy component is constrained
by combining Chandra observations of the X-ray luminosity of galaxy clusters
with independent measurements of the baryonic matter density and the latest
measurements of the Hubble parameter as given by the HST key project. By
assuming a spatially flat scenario driven by a "quintessence" component with an
equation of state we place the following limits on the
cosmological parameters and : (i) and (1) if the
equation of state of the dark energy is restricted to the interval (\emph{usual} quintessence) and (ii) and
() if violates the null energy condition and assume values (\emph{extended} quintessence or ``phantom'' energy). These results are in
good agreement with independent studies based on supernovae observations,
large-scale structure and the anisotropies of the cosmic background radiation.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, LaTe
Bianchi type II models in the presence of perfect fluid and anisotropic dark energy
Spatially homogeneous but totally anisotropic and non-flat Bianchi type II
cosmological model has been studied in general relativity in the presence of
two minimally interacting fluids; a perfect fluid as the matter fluid and a
hypothetical anisotropic fluid as the dark energy fluid. The Einstein's field
equations have been solved by applying two kinematical ans\"{a}tze: we have
assumed the variation law for the mean Hubble parameter that yields a constant
value of deceleration parameter, and one of the components of the shear tensor
has been considered proportional to the mean Hubble parameter. We have
particularly dwelled on the accelerating models with non-divergent expansion
anisotropy as the Universe evolves. Yielding anisotropic pressure, the fluid we
consider in the context of dark energy, can produce results that can be
produced in the presence of isotropic fluid in accordance with the \Lambda CDM
cosmology. However, the derived model gives additional opportunities by being
able to allow kinematics that cannot be produced in the presence of fluids that
yield only isotropic pressure. We have obtained well behaving cases where the
anisotropy of the expansion and the anisotropy of the fluid converge to finite
values (include zero) in the late Universe. We have also showed that although
the metric we consider is totally anisotropic, the anisotropy of the dark
energy is constrained to be axially symmetric, as long as the overall energy
momentum tensor possesses zero shear stress.Comment: 15 pages; 5 figures; matches the version published in The European

Observational constraint on generalized Chaplygin gas model
We investigate observational constraints on the generalized Chaplygin gas
(GCG) model as the unification of dark matter and dark energy from the latest
observational data: the Union SNe Ia data, the observational Hubble data, the
SDSS baryon acoustic peak and the five-year WMAP shift parameter. It is
obtained that the best fit values of the GCG model parameters with their
confidence level are ()
, ()
. Furthermore in this model, we can see that the
evolution of equation of state (EOS) for dark energy is similar to quiessence,
and its current best-fit value is with the confidence
level .Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
