The broadband anchovy (Anchoviella lepidentostole) is one of the most important fishery resources for economic and social development of Iguape City and for the whole of the south coast of São Paulo state. Nowadays this activity involves over 2,500 fishermen. This paper aims to evaluate its fishing, and discuss how the activity is managed. In order to conduct this study, production data and catch per unit effort (CPUE) data from the 1998-2000 period have been collected, and the characterisation of the activity has also been done. A decline in broadband anchovy abundance had been observed in the region up until 2004, when a new regulation was implemented, in an attempt to recover the resource, with the establishment of closed season fishing (defeso) during the catch season, and adjustments in the employed fishing gear. The results have shown a recovery of the abundance of broadband anchovy throughout the 2005-2010 period, showing thus far that the measures taken for the maintenance of the resource have been successful. The activity has been managed through discussions involving people from the fishing sector in order to determine the controversial actions to be taken, that are hard to enforce. In order to achieve a more satisfactory resource management, it is necessary to keep the participatory process, with adaptive co-management, based on discussion among all the sectors involved (from government and society), and constant monitoring of the activity.734691697Armitage, D.R., Bekers, F., Doubleday, N., (2007) Adaptative co-management: Colaboration, learning and multi-level governance, p. 344. , Vancouver: University of British Columbia PressÁvila-Da-Silva, A.O., Carneiro, M.H., Fagundes, L., Gerenciador de banco de dados de controle estatístico de produção pesqueira marítima-ProPesq® (1999) Proceedings of the XI Congresso Brasileiro de Engenharia de Pesca, 2, pp. 824-832. , In, e I Congresso Latino Americano de Engenharia de Pesca. Casimir effect in a turbulent plasma

    No full text
The analogy between the Casimir force acting on two parallel plates in vacuum and a similar force, which is of classical nature, acting on two parallel plates immersed in a turbulent plasma is explored. Like in the vacuum case, the force is attractive in a plasma, but its magnitude depends now on the energy level of the turbulent fluctuations as well as on the type of turbulence. The Casimir interaction between two nearby dust grains is also examined

Frequency Up-Conversion of an Intense Laser Beam Producing Gas Ionization in a Cavity

    No full text
Frequency up-conversion of a laser beam causing gas ionization in a cavity is considered. A simple ionization model, based on one-photon and multi-photon processes is used. The WKB method is utilized to provide the slow evolution of the field amplitude. The analytical results thus obtained are presented and contrasted with the exact numerical results where all the time scales are present. The evolution of the wave frequency and its upshift predicted by the WKB method are in very good agreement with the numerical results. The same applies, though to a lesser degree, for the field energy loss as well

A quasi-particle approach to modulational instabilities in wave-plasma interactions

    No full text
The interaction of broadband turbulence with monochromatic plasma waves has been studied. A kinetic equation for quasi-particles is used to describe the turbulence. Beam instabilities occur in this interaction when the group velocity of the short-wavelength wave packets, or quasi-particles, is nearly equal to the phase velocity of the long-wavelength monochromatic wave. Depending on the bandwidth of the turbulence, either a kinetic (resonant) instability, e. g. quasi-particle Landau damping, or a hydrodynamic instability, e. g. a modulational instability, will develop. This establishes a direct link between short- and long-wavelength perturbations of the medium. In this paper, the interaction between broadband drift mode turbulence and (nearly) monochromatic zonal flows has been studied numerically. Simulations have been conducted in which a particle-in-cell representation is used for the quasi-particles, while a fluid model is employed for the plasma. The interactions have been studied in both a tokamak-like configuration and a pseudo-shockwave configuration. Simulation results show the development of a zonal flow through the modulational instability of the drift wave distribution, as well as the existence of solitary zonal flow structures drifting towards steeper relative density gradients. The coupling between short- and long-wavelength modes found here is distinct from the usual picture of direct and inverse energy cascades, and it can be used as a new paradigm for the fluid and plasma turbulence theories

Photon acceleration of ultrashort laser pulses by relativistic ionization fronts

    No full text
We present experimental results from the collision of weak ultrashort pulses with relativistic ionization fronts in copropagation and counterpropagation. The observed frequency upshifts of the probe pulses provide not only information about the electron density of the ionization front but also reveal the fine structure of the front. The connection between the correlation lengths for copropagation and counterpropagation and the longitudinal and transverse dimensions of the ionization front is also demonstrated thus showing the feasibility of using the frequency upshift experienced by short probe pulses to fully characterize relativistic ionization fronts and other relativistic coherent structures in laser-produced plasmas
