Influence of Small Particles Inclusion on Selective Laser Melting of Ti-6al-4v Powder
The particle size distribution and powder morphology of metallic powders have an important effect on powder bed fusion based additive manufacturing processes, such as selective laser melting (SLM). The process development and parameter optimization require a fundamental understanding of the influence of powder on SLM. This study introduces a pre-alloyed titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V powder, which has a certain amount of small particles, for SLM. The influence of small particle inclusion is investigated through microscopy of surface topography, elemental and microstructural analysis, and mechanical testing, compared to the Ti-6Al-4V powder provided by SLM machine vendor. It is found that the small particles inclusion in Ti-6Al-4V powder has a noticeable effect on extra laser energy absorption, which may develop imperfections and deteriorate the SLM fatigue performance
Contributions from SUSY-FCNC couplings to the interpretation of the HyperCP events for the decay \Sigma^+ \to p \mu^+ \mu^-
The observation of three events for the decay
with a dimuon invariant mass of MeV by the HyperCP collaboration
imply that a new particle X may be needed to explain the observed dimuon
invariant mass distribution. We show that there are regions in the SUSY-FCNC
parameter space where the in the NMSSM can be used to explain the
HyperCP events without contradicting all the existing constraints from the
measurements of the kaon decays, and the constraints from the
mixing are automatically satisfied once the constraints from kaon decays are
satisfied.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
Modelling of photonic wire Bragg Gratings
Some important properties of photonic wire Bragg grating structures have been investigate. The design, obtained as a generalisation of the full-width gap grating, has been modelled using 3D finite-difference time-domain simulations. Different types of stop-band have been observed. The impact of the grating geometry on the lowest order (longest wavelength) stop-band has been investigated - and has identified deeply indented configurations where reduction of the stop-bandwidth and of the reflectivity occurred. Our computational results have been substantially validated by an experimental demonstration of the fundamental stop-band of photonic wire Bragg gratings fabricated on silicon-on-insulator material. The accuracy of two distinct 2D computational models based on the effective index method has also been studied - because of their inherently much greater rapidity and consequent utility for approximate initial designs. A 2D plan-view model has been found to reproduce a large part of the essential features of the spectral response of full 3D models
High-temperature deformation behavior of a gamma TiAl alloy-microstructural evolution and mechanisms
The present investigation was carried out in the context of the internal-variable theory of inelastic deformation and the dynamic-materials model (DMM), to shed light on the high-temperature deformation mechanisms in TiAl. A series of load-relaxation tests and tensile tests were conducted on a fine-grained duplex gamma TiAl alloy at temperatures ranging from 800 degreesC to 1050 degreesC. Results of the load-relaxation tests, in which the deformation took place at an infinitesimal level (epsilon congruent to 0.05), showed that the deformation behavior of the alloy was well described by the sum of dislocation-glide and dislocation-climb processes. To investigate the deformation behavior of the fine-grained duplex gamma TiAl alloy at a finite strain level, processing maps were constructed on the basis of a DMM. For this purpose, compression tests were carried out at temperatures ranging from 800 degreesC to 1250 degreesC using strain rates ranging from 10 to 10(-4)/s. Two domains were identified and characterized in the processing maps obtained at finite strain levels (0.2 and 0.6). One domain was found in the region of 980 degreesC and 10(-3)/s with a peak efficiency (maximum efficiency of power dissipation) of 48 pct and was identified as a domain of dynamic recrystallization (DRx) from microstructural observations. Another domain with a peak efficiency of 64 pct was located in the region of 1250 degreesC and 10(-4)/s and was considered to be a domain of superplasticity.ope
Effect of Composition Changes on the Structural Relaxation of a Binary Mixture
Within the mode-coupling theory for idealized glass transitions, we study the
evolution of structural relaxation in binary mixtures of hard spheres with size
ratios of the two components varying between 0.5 and 1.0. We find two
scenarios for the glassy dynamics. For small size disparity, the mixing yields
a slight extension of the glass regime. For larger size disparity, a
plasticization effect is obtained, leading to a stabilization of the liquid due
to mixing. For all , a decrease of the elastic moduli at the transition
due to mixing is predicted. A stiffening of the glass structure is found as is
reflected by the increase of the Debye-Waller factors at the transition points.
The critical amplitudes for density fluctuations at small and intermediate wave
vectors decrease upon mixing, and thus the universal formulas for the
relaxation near the plateau values describe a slowing down of the dynamics upon
mixing for the first step of the two-step relaxation scenario. The results
explain the qualitative features of mixing effects reported by Williams and van
Megen [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{64}, 041502 (2001)] for dynamical light-scattering
measurements on binary mixtures of hard-sphere-like colloids with size ratio
Scale-free static and dynamical correlations in melts of monodisperse and Flory-distributed homopolymers: A review of recent bond-fluctuation model studies
It has been assumed until very recently that all long-range correlations are
screened in three-dimensional melts of linear homopolymers on distances beyond
the correlation length characterizing the decay of the density
fluctuations. Summarizing simulation results obtained by means of a variant of
the bond-fluctuation model with finite monomer excluded volume interactions and
topology violating local and global Monte Carlo moves, we show that due to an
interplay of the chain connectivity and the incompressibility constraint, both
static and dynamical correlations arise on distances . These
correlations are scale-free and, surprisingly, do not depend explicitly on the
compressibility of the solution. Both monodisperse and (essentially)
Flory-distributed equilibrium polymers are considered.Comment: 60 pages, 49 figure
Pseudomonas aeruginosa AlgF is a protein-protein interaction mediator required for acetylation of the alginate exopolysaccharide
Enzymatic modifications of bacterial exopolysaccharides enhance immune evasion and persistence during infection. In the Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, acetylation of alginate reduces opsonic killing by phagocytes and improves reactive oxygen species scavenging. Although it is well known that alginate acetylation in P. aeruginosa requires AlgI, AlgJ, AlgF, and AlgX, how these proteins coordinate polymer modification at a molecular level remains unclear. Here, we describe the structural characterization of AlgF and its protein interaction network. We characterize direct interactions between AlgF and both AlgJ and AlgX in vitro and demonstrate an association between AlgF and AlgX, as well as AlgJ and AlgI, in P. aeruginosa. We determine that AlgF does not exhibit acetylesterase activity and is unable to bind to polymannuronate in vitro. Therefore, we propose that AlgF functions to mediate protein-protein interactions between alginate acetylation enzymes, forming the periplasmic AlgJFXK (AlgJ-AlgF-AlgX-AlgK) acetylation and export complex required for robust biofilm formation.Bio-organic Synthesi
