Finite temperature pion vector form factors in Chiral Perturbation Theory
We discuss the thermal behaviour of the pion vector form factors and
calculate them in one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory. The perturbative result
is used to analyze the -dependent electromagnetic pion charge radius,
obtaining a rough estimate of the deconfinement critical temperature. Imposing
thermal unitarity, we generate the resonance pole for the form factor in
the center of mass frame. The peak height in the modulus of the form
factor decreases for increasing temperature, while its width increases and the
peak position is slightly shifted downwards for 150 MeV. These
results point in the direction suggested by many analysis of dilepton

Primordial Nucleosynthesis Constraints on Z' Properties
In models involving new TeV-scale Z' gauge bosons, the new U(1)' symmetry
often prevents the generation of Majorana masses needed for a conventional
neutrino seesaw, leading to three superweakly interacting ``right-handed''
neutrinos nu_R, the Dirac partners of the ordinary neutrinos. These can be
produced prior to big bang nucleosynthesis by the Z' interactions, leading to a
faster expansion rate and too much ^4He. We quantify the constraints on the Z'
properties from nucleosynthesis for Z' couplings motivated by a class of E_6
models parametrized by an angle theta_E6. The rate for the annihilation of
three approximately massless right-handed neutrinos into other particle pairs
through the Z' channel is calculated. The decoupling temperature, which is
higher than that of ordinary left-handed neutrinos due to the large Z' mass, is
evaluated, and the equivalent number of new doublet neutrinos Delta N_nu is
obtained numerically as a function of the Z' mass and couplings for a variety
of assumptions concerning the Z-Z' mixing angle and the quark-hadron transition
temperature T_c. Except near the values of theta_E6 for which the Z' decouples
from the right-handed neutrinos, the Z' mass and mixing constraints from
nucleosynthesis are much more stringent than the existing laboratory limits
from searches for direct production or from precision electroweak data, and are
comparable to the ranges that may ultimately be probed at proposed colliders.
For the case T_c = 150 MeV with the theoretically favored range of Z-Z'
mixings, Delta N_nu 4.3 TeV for any value of theta_E6. Larger
mixing or larger T_c often lead to unacceptably large Delta N_nu except near

Dualities and dilemmas: contending with uncertainty in large-scale safety-critical projects

Most decisions that are made on a safety-critical project involve uncertainty, the consequences of which may be highly significant to the safe and timely delivery of the project. Based on interviews with project management practitioners on nine large-scale civil nuclear and aerospace projects, we explore how uncertainty emerges, and how project management practitioners identify, analyse and act on it. We make three important contributions. First, we present three approaches – structural, behavioural and relational – that individuals and organizations can adopt when contending with project uncertainty. Secondly, we characterize nine dualities at play in the management of project uncertainty and thirdly, we identify key differences between how civil nuclear and aerospace project managers confront project uncertainty, which have important implications for how projects might be organized in both these industry sectors. Drawing attention to the structural, behavioural and relational approaches to project uncertainty and the tensions that manifest themselves in each approach should enable the project management community to make progress in environments of high uncertainty where situations are often complex, rapidly changing and confusing, and yet where, for reasons of safety, failure is not an option
Random polytopes: Their definition, generation and aggregate properties
The definition of random polytope adopted in this paper restricts consideration to those probability measures satisfying two properties. First, the measure must induce an absolutely continuous distribution over the positions of the bounding hyperplanes of the random polytope; and second, it must result in every point in the space being equally as likely as any other point of lying within the random polytope. An efficient Monte Carlo method for their computer generation is presented together with analytical formulas characterizing their aggregate properties. In particular, it is shown that the expected number of extreme points for such random polytopes increases monotonically in the number of constraints to the limiting case of a polytope topologically equivalent to a hypercube. Cost-effectiveness of replacing versus discarding the nail in children with nail bed injury
Every year in the UK, around 10 000 children need to have operations to mend injuries to the bed of their fingernails. Currently, most children have their fingernail placed back on the injured nail bed after the operation. The NINJA trial found that children were slightly less likely to have an infection if the nail was thrown away rather than being put back, but the difference between groups was small and could have be due to chance. This study looked at whether replacing the nail is cost-effective compared with throwing it away. Using data from the NINJA trial, we compared costs, healthcare use, and quality of life and assessed the cost-effectiveness of replacing the nail. It was found that throwing the nail away after surgery would save the National Health Service (NHS) £75 (€85) per operation compared with placing the nail back on the nail bed. Changing clinical practice could save the NHS in England £720 000 (€819 000) per year
