Response of Ventricular Repolarization to Simulated Microgravity Measured by Periodic Repolarization Dynamics Using Phase-Rectified Signal Averaging
Head-Down Bed Rest (HDBR) microgravity simulation induces cardiovascular deconditioning, including effects on ventricular repolarization. The index of Periodic Repolarization Dynamics (PRD) was developed to quantify low-frequency oscillations of cardiac repolarization. In this study, PRD was quantified by Phase Rectified Signal Averaging (PRDPRSA) and Continuous Wavelet Transform (PRDCWT) methods. PRD was analyzed in ECGs from 22 volunteers at rest and during orthostatic Tilt-Table Test (TTT) performed before and after -6° 60-days HDBR. Significant correlation was found between PRD measured by PRSA and CWT (Pearson''s ¿ = 0.93, p < 10-54 and Kendall''s t = 0.79 p < 10-38). A highly significant increase was found when PRDPRSA values were measured at POST-HDBR with respect to PRE-HDBR in the tilt phase: 1.40 [1.10] deg and 0.97 [0.90] deg (median [IQR]), p = 0.008, respectively. PRDPRSA also increased significantly in the tilt phase with respect to baseline, both at POST-HDBR (0.90 [0.57] deg, p = 0.003) and at PRE-HDBR (0.75 [0.45] deg, p = 0.011). PRD, either measured with PRSA or with CWT, is able to measure changes in ventricular repolarization induced by microgravity simulation as well as following sympathetic provocation
Magnetization in short-period mesoscopic electron systems
We calculate the magnetization of the two-dimensional electron gas in a
short-period lateral superlattice, with the Coulomb interaction included in
Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations. We compare the results for a finite,
mesoscopic system modulated by a periodic potential, with the results for the
infinite periodic system. In addition to the expected strong exchange effects,
the size of the system, the type and the strength of the lateral modulation
leave their fingerprints on the magnetization.Comment: RevTeX4, 10 pages with 14 included postscript figures To be published

Spontaneous Coherence and Collective Modes in Double-Layer Quantum Dot Systems
We study the ground state and the collective excitations of
parabolically-confined double-layer quantum dot systems in a strong magnetic
field. We identify parameter regimes where electrons form maximum density
droplet states, quantum-dot analogs of the incompressible states of the bulk
integer quantum Hall effect. In these regimes the Hartree-Fock approximation
and the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximations can be used to describe the
ground state and collective excitations respectively. We comment on the
relationship between edge excitations of dots and edge magneto-plasmon
excitations of bulk double-layer systems.Comment: 20 pages (figures included) and also available at

Momentum-Resolved Tunneling into Fractional Quantum Hall Edges
Tunneling from a two-dimensional contact into quantum-Hall edges is
considered theoretically for a case where the barrier is extended, uniform, and
parallel to the edge. In contrast to previously realized tunneling geometries,
details of the microscopic edge structure are exhibited directly in the voltage
and magnetic-field dependence of the differential tunneling conductance. In
particular, it is possible to measure the dispersion of the edge-magnetoplasmon
mode, and the existence of additional, sometimes counterpropagating,
edge-excitation branches could be detected.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTex
Composite Fermion Description of Correlated Electrons in Quantum Dots: Low Zeeman Energy Limit
We study the applicability of composite fermion theory to electrons in
two-dimensional parabolically-confined quantum dots in a strong perpendicular
magnetic field in the limit of low Zeeman energy. The non-interacting composite
fermion spectrum correctly specifies the primary features of this system.
Additional features are relatively small, indicating that the residual
interaction between the composite fermions is weak. \footnote{Published in

Fluctuations and Dissipation of Coherent Magnetization
A quantum mechanical model is used to derive a generalized Landau-Lifshitz
equation for a magnetic moment, including fluctuations and dissipation. The
model reproduces the Gilbert-Brown form of the equation in the classical limit.
The magnetic moment is linearly coupled to a reservoir of bosonic degrees of
freedom. Use of generalized coherent states makes the semiclassical limit more
transparent within a path-integral formulation. A general
fluctuation-dissipation theorem is derived. The magnitude of the magnetic
moment also fluctuates beyond the Gaussian approximation. We discuss how the
approximate stochastic description of the thermal field follows from our
result. As an example, we go beyond the linear-response method and show how the
thermal fluctuations become anisotropy-dependent even in the uniaxial case.Comment: 22 page
Spatial-spectral flexible optical networking:enabling switching solutions for a simplified and efficient SDM network platform
The traffic carried by core optical networks grows at a steady but remarkable pace of 30-40% year-over-year. Optical transmissions and networking advancements continue to satisfy the traffic requirements by delivering the content over the network infrastructure in a cost and energy efficient manner. Such core optical networks serve the information traffic demands in a dynamic way, in response to requirements for shifting of traffics demands, both temporally (day/night) and spatially (business district/residential). However as we are approaching fundamental spectral efficiency limits of singlemode fibers, the scientific community is pursuing recently the development of an innovative, all-optical network architecture introducing the spatial degree of freedom when designing/operating future transport networks. Spacedivision- multiplexing through the use of bundled single mode fibers, and/or multi-core fibers and/or few-mode fibers can offer up to 100-fold capacity increase in future optical networks. The EU INSPACE project is working on the development of a complete spatial-spectral flexible optical networking solution, offering the network ultra-high capacity, flexibility and energy efficiency required to meet the challenges of delivering exponentially growing traffic demands in the internet over the next twenty years. In this paper we will present the motivation and main research activities of the INSPACE consortium towards the realization of the overall project solution
Density functional method for nonequilibrium electron transport
We describe an ab initio method for calculating the electronic structure,
electronic transport, and forces acting on the atoms, for atomic scale systems
connected to semi-infinite electrodes and with an applied voltage bias. Our
method is based on the density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in the
well tested Siesta approach (which uses non-local norm-conserving
pseudopotentials to describe the effect of the core electrons, and linear
combination of finite-range numerical atomic orbitals to describe the valence
states). We fully deal with the atomistic structure of the whole system,
treating both the contact and the electrodes on the same footing. The effect of
the finite bias (including selfconsistency and the solution of the
electrostatic problem) is taken into account using nonequilibrium Green's
functions. We relate the nonequilibrium Green's function expressions to the
more transparent scheme involving the scattering states. As an illustration,
the method is applied to three systems where we are able to compare our results
to earlier ab initio DFT calculations or experiments, and we point out
differences between this method and existing schemes. The systems considered
are: (1) single atom carbon wires connected to aluminum electrodes with
extended or finite cross section, (2) single atom gold wires, and finally (3)
large carbon nanotube systems with point defects.Comment: 18 pages, 23 figure
