PTSD, psychological morbidity and marital dissatisfaction in colonial war veterans
Background: Forty years after Colonial War, veterans still show psychological disturbances affecting their marital and sexual satisfaction.Aims: This study analyzed the relationships between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), number of PTSD symptoms and symptom clusters, psychological morbidity, marital dissatisfaction and sexual dissatisfaction; the variables that contributed to marital dissatisfaction and the mediator role of marital dissatisfaction and sexual dissatisfaction, in a sample of colonial War Veterans.Method: The sample included 138 Portuguese war veterans who answered Index of Marital Satisfaction; Index of Sexual Satisfaction; Beck Depression Inventory; State Trait Anxiety Inventory; Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Scale.Results: PTSD, number of PTSD symptoms and symptom clusters were associated with psychological morbidity, marital and sexual dissatisfaction. Age, depression symptoms and sexual dissatisfaction contributed to marital dissatisfaction and the model explained 55% of the variance. Marital dissatisfaction mediated the relationship between depression symptoms and sexual dissatisfaction, as well as between number of PTSD symptoms and sexual dissatisfaction.Conclusions: Health professionals need to take into consideration the veteran's marital and sexual relationship in clinical routine consultations. Eruptions of Magnetic Ropes in Two Homologous Solar Events on 2002 June 1 and 2: a Key to Understanding of an Enigmatic Flare
The goal of this paper is to understand the drivers, configurations, and
scenarios of two similar eruptive events, which occurred in the same solar
active region 9973 on 2002 June 1 and 2. The June 2 event was previously
studied by Sui, Holman, and Dennis (2006, 2008), who concluded that it was
challenging for popular flare models. Using multi-spectral data, we analyze a
combination of the two events. Each of the events exhibited an evolving
cusp-like feature. We have revealed that these apparent ``cusps'' were most
likely mimicked by twisted magnetic flux ropes, but unlikely to be related to
the inverted Y-like magnetic configuration in the standard flare model. The
ropes originated inside a funnel-like magnetic domain whose base was bounded by
an EUV ring structure, and the top was associated with a coronal null point.
The ropes appear to be the major drivers for the events, but their rise was not
triggered by reconnection in the coronal null point. We propose a scenario and
a three-dimensional scheme for these events in which the filament eruptions and
flares were caused by interaction of the ropes.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figure
Exo-hydrogenated Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes
An extensive first-principles study of fully exo-hydrogenated zigzag (n,0)
and armchair (n,n) single wall carbon nanotubes (CH), polyhedral
molecules including cubane, dodecahedrane, and CH points to
crucial differences in the electronic and atomic structures relevant to
hydrogen storage and device applications. CH's are estimated to be
stable up to the radius of a (8,8) nanotube, with binding energies proportional
to 1/R. Attaching a single hydrogen to any nanotube is always exothermic.
Hydrogenation of zigzag nanotubes is found to be more likely than armchair
nanotubes with similar radius. Our findings may have important implications for
selective functionalization and finding a way of separating similar radius

Microwave conductivity of YBaCuO including inelastic scattering
The fluctuation spectrum responsible for the inelastic scattering in
YBaCuO which was recently determined from consideration of the
in-plane optical conductivity in the infrared, is used to calculate the
temperature dependence of the microwave conductivity at several measured
frequencies. Reasonable overall agreement can only be achieved if, in addition,
some impurity scattering is included within a model potential intermediate
between weak (Born) and strong (unitary) limit.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Strong-correlation effects in Born effective charges
Large values of Born effective charges are generally considered as reliable
indicators of the genuine tendency of an insulator towards ferroelectric
instability. However, these quantities can be very much influenced by strong
electron correlation and metallic behavior, which are not exclusive properties
of ferroelectric materials. In this paper we compare the Born effective charges
of some prototypical ferroelectrics with those of magnetic, non-ferroelectric
compounds using a novel, self-interaction free methodology that improves on the
local-density approximation description of the electronic properties. We show
that the inclusion of strong-correlation effects systermatically reduces the
size of the Born effective charges and the electron localization lengths.
Furthermore we give an interpretation of the Born effective charges in terms of
band energy structure and orbital occupations which can be used as a guideline
to rationalize their values in the general case.Comment: 10 pages, 4 postscript figure
Efficient photoionization for barium ion trapping using a dipole-allowed resonant two-photon transition
Two efficient and isotope-selective resonant two-photon ionization techniques
for loading barium ions into radio-frequency (RF)-traps are demonstrated. The
scheme of using a strong dipole-allowed transition at \lambda=553 nm as a first
step towards ionization is compared to the established technique of using a
weak intercombination line (\lambda=413 nm). An increase of two orders of
magnitude in the ionization efficiency is found favoring the transition at 553
nm. This technique can be implemented using commercial all-solid-state laser
systems and is expected to be advantageous compared to other narrowband
photoionization schemes of barium in cases where highest efficiency and
isotope-selectivity are required.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

Coherent control of electron spin qubits in silicon using a global field
Silicon spin qubits promise to leverage the extraordinary progress in silicon nanoelectronic device fabrication over the past half century to deliver large-scale quantum processors. Despite the scalability advantage of using silicon technology, realising a quantum computer with the millions of qubits required to run some of the most demanding quantum algorithms poses several outstanding challenges, including how to control many qubits simultaneously. Recently, compact 3D microwave dielectric resonators were proposed as a way to deliver the magnetic fields for spin qubit control across an entire quantum chip using only a single microwave source. Although spin resonance of individual electrons in the globally applied microwave field was demonstrated, the spins were controlled incoherently. Here we report coherent Rabi oscillations of single electron spin qubits in a planar SiMOS quantum dot device using a global magnetic field generated off-chip. The observation of coherent qubit control driven by a dielectric resonator establishes a credible pathway to achieving large-scale control in a spin-based quantum computer
Methodological Guidelines for Engineering Self-organization and Emergence
The ASCENS project deals with the design and development of complex self-adaptive systems, where self-organization is one of the possible means by which to achieve self-adaptation. However, to support the development of self-organising systems, one has to extensively re-situate their engineering from a software architectures and requirements point of view. In particular, in this chapter, we highlight the importance of the decomposition in components to go from the problem to the engineered solution. This leads us to explain and rationalise the following architectural strategy: designing by following the problem organisation. We discuss architectural advantages for development and documentation, and its coherence with existing methodological approaches to self-organisation, and we illustrate the approach with an example on the area of swarm robotics
