Evaluation of Resource Management Options for Smallholder Farms Using an Integrated Modelling Approach

    Get PDF
Farm-level analysis of trade-offs between soil fertility management alternatives is required to improve understanding of complex biophysical and socio-economic factors influencing decision making in smallholder farming systems and to identify opportunities for improving resource use efficiency. A farm characterization tool (IMPACT) linked to a generic optimization model (Household) was used to evaluate resource use on farms in contrasting wealth categories. The Household model optimized the net cash income for the farms (accounting for all on-farm and off-farm income, costs of production and expenditure for the households). Alternatives for management of nutrient resource were simulated using other models; APSIM for the crop production and RUMINANT for the livestock component. The output from the simulation models was fed into the Household model and evaluated within the biophysical and socioeconomic boundaries of the farms. Analysis of the performance of a poor farmer by IMPACT indicated a yearly net cash balance of US7perannum(afterallneedshadbeentakencareof),mainlyduetonegativereturnsfromthecroppingsystem.Thefarmerreliedondonatedfoodandfertilizers.Thecashbalancewasnegative,eventhoughshealsoworkedforotherfarmers(i.e.soldlabour,about10daysamonthduringsixmonthsofthecropgrowingseason)togenerateincome.ThenetincomeofthepoorfarmwouldbeincreasedtoUS -7 per annum (after all needs had been taken care of), mainly due to negative returns from the cropping system. The farmer relied on donated food and fertilizers. The cash balance was negative, even though she also worked for other farmers (i.e. sold labour, about 10 days a month during six months of the crop growing season) to generate income. The net income of the poor farm would be increased to US81 per annum and the N balance from 7 kg ha-1 yr-1 to 10 kg ha-1 yr-1 by expanding the area allocated to groundnut from the current 5% to 31%. This would, however, generate a huge demand in labour in the current year (extra 46-man days) and reduce the P balance from 0 to -1 kg ha-1 yr-1. Maize could be managed more efficiently on the poor farm by cultivating a smaller, well-managed area. A wealthy farm household with a maize dominated cropping system had a net cash balance of US210perannum,mainlyfromsaleofcropproducts.Undercurrentresourcemanagement,thenetcashbalancecouldbeincreasedtoUS210 per annum, mainly from sale of crop products. Under current resource management, the net cash balance could be increased to US290 per annum by optimization of household energy and protein consumption. The net cash balance for the wealthy farm would be further increased to US448perannum,andnutrientbalancesto271kgNha1and30kgPha1byexpandingthemanagementstrategywheremaizewasgrownwithacombinationofcattlemanureandammoniumnitratefertilizer.Todothis,thefarmerwouldneedtosourcemoremanure(orimprovecaptureandtheefficiencywithwhichnutrientsarecycledthroughmanure)andinvestin110mandaysextralabour.ExpansionoftheareagrowntogroundnutwithoutfertilizerinputstoathirdofthefarmwouldreducenetcashbalancebyUS448 per annum, and nutrient balances to 271 kg N ha-1 and 30 kg P ha-1 by expanding the management strategy where maize was grown with a combination of cattle manure and ammonium nitrate fertilizer. To do this, the farmer would need to source more manure (or improve capture and the efficiency with which nutrients are cycled through manure) and invest in 110 man-days extra labour. Expansion of the area grown to groundnut without fertilizer inputs to a third of the farm would reduce net cash balance by US11 compared with the current crop allocation due to poor groundnut yield. This would also increase labour demand by 155 mandays. Groundnut intensification on the wealthy farm would be more economic and labour effective if a small area was grown with basal fertilizer (7%N, 6%P, 8%K). Despite reducing nutrient balances for the arable plots, feeding groundnut residues to lactating cows increased net cash balance by 12-18% for the current year through increased milk production. The integrated modelling approach was useful for linking biophysical and socio-economic factors influencing decision making on smallholder farms and evaluating trade-offs for resource use in terms of nutrient balances, labour use, food sufficiency and cash balance.Farm Management, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Secondary pulmonary alveolar proteinosis treated by lung transplant: A case report.

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a pulmonary disease characterized by disruption of surfactant homeostasis resulting in its accumulation in the alveoli. PAP is classically classified into three categories (Table 1): 1/primary (or autoimmune) with antibodies targeting the GM-CSF pathway, 2/secondary to another disease, typically a hematologic malignancy, and 3/genetic. A 30 year-old woman received an allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) after treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Within the first 6 months post HSCT, she developed an ocular, oral, digestive and hepatic graft-versus-host disease associated with a mixed ventilatory defect with a very severe obstructive syndrome and a severe CO diffusion impairment. High resolution computed tomography showed a classical "crazy paving" pattern. Aspect and differential cell count of BAL were normal. All microbiological samples remained culture negative. Histo-pathological analysis of transbronchial biopsies was unremarkable. Because of the severity of the respiratory insufficiency, open-lung biopsy (OBL) could not be performed. Despite multiple immunosuppressive therapies, lung function deteriorated rapidly; the patient also developed an excavated fungal lesion unresponsive to treatment. She underwent a bilateral lung transplant 48 months after HSCT. Histo-pathological analysis of explanted lungs showed obliterative bronchiolitis (OB), diffuse PAP and invasive cavitary pulmonary aspergillosis. This case illustrates the simultaneous occurrence of OB, PAP and a fungal infection in a 30-year old female patient who underwent HSCT for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). To our knowledge this is the only documented case of PAP associated with OB treated by lung transplantation

Non-perturbatively Renormalized Light-Quark Masses with the Alpha Action

We have computed the light quark masses using the O(a^2) improved Alpha action, in the quenched approximation. The renormalized masses have been obtained non-perturbatively. By eliminating the systematic error coming from the truncation of the perturbative series, our procedure removes the discrepancies, observed in previous calculations, between the results obtained using the vector and the axial-vector Ward identities. It also gives values of the quark masses larger than those obtained by computing the renormalization constants using (boosted) perturbation theory. Our main results, in the RI (MOM) scheme and at a renormalization scale \mu=2 GeV, are m^{RI}_s= 138(15) MeV and m^{RI}_l= 5.6(5) MeV, where m^{RI}_s is the mass of the strange quark and m^{RI}_l=(m^{RI}_u+m^{RI}_d)/2 the average mass of the up-down quarks. From these results, which have been obtained non-perturbatively, by using continuum perturbation theory we derive the \bar{MS} masses, at the same scale, and the renormalization group invariant (m^{RGI}) masses. We find m^{NLO \bar{MS}}_s= 121(13)$ MeV and m^{NLO\bar{MS}}_l= 4.9(4) MeV at the next-to-leading order; m^{N^2LO \bar{MS}}_s= 111(12) MeV, m^{N^2LO \bar{MS}}_l= 4.5(4) MeV, m_s^{RGI}= 177(19) MeV and m^{RGI}_l= 7.2(6) MeV at the next-to-next-to-leading order.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur

Cup products on polyhedral approximations of 3D digital images

Let I be a 3D digital image, and let Q(I) be the associated cubical complex. In this paper we show how to simplify the combinatorial structure of Q(I) and obtain a homeomorphic cellular complex P(I) with fewer cells. We introduce formulas for a diagonal approximation on a general polygon and use it to compute cup products on the cohomology H *(P(I)). The cup product encodes important geometrical information not captured by the cohomology groups. Consequently, the ring structure of H *(P(I)) is a finer topological invariant. The algorithm proposed here can be applied to compute cup products on any polyhedral approximation of an object embedded in 3-space

ALS skeletal muscle shows enhanced TGF-β signaling, fibrosis and induction of fibro/adipogenic progenitor markers

Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus.Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease in which upper and lower motoneurons degenerate leading to muscle wasting, paralysis and eventually death from respiratory failure. Several studies indicate that skeletal muscle contributes to disease progression; however the molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Fibrosis is a common feature in skeletal muscle under chronic damage conditions such as those caused by muscular dystrophies or denervation. However, the exact mechanisms of fibrosis induction and the cellular bases of this pathological response are unknown. We show that extracellular matrix (ECM) components are augmented in skeletal muscles of symptomatic hSOD1G93A mice, a widely used murine model of ALS. These mice also show increased TGF-β1 mRNA levels, total Smad3 protein levels and p-Smad3 positive nuclei. Furthermore, platelet-derived growth factor receptor-α (PDGFRα), Tcf4 and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) levels are augmented in the skeletal muscle of symptomatic hSOD1G93A mice. Additionally, the fibro/adipogenic progenitors (FAPs), which are the main producers of ECM constituents, are also increased in these pathogenic conditions. Therefore, FAPs and ECM components are more abundant in symptomatic stages of the disease than in pre-symptomatic stages. We present evidence that fibrosis observed in skeletal muscle of symptomatic hSOD1G93A mice is accompanied with an induction of TGF-β signaling, and also that FAPs might be involved in triggering a fibrotic response. Co-localization of p-Smad3 positive cells together with PDGFRα was observed in the interstitial cells of skeletal muscles from symptomatic hSOD1G93A mice. Finally, the targeting of pro-fibrotic factors such as TGF-β, CTGF/CCN2 and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) signaling pathway might be a suitable therapeutic approach to improve muscle function in several degenerative diseases.
