Short distance properties of cascading gauge theories
We study the short distance (large momentum) properties of correlation
functions of cascading gauge theories by performing a tree-level computation in
their dual gravitational background. We prove that these theories are
holographically renormalizable; the correlators have only analytic ultraviolet
divergences, which may be removed by appropriate local counterterms. We find
that n-point correlation functions of properly normalized operators have the
expected scaling in the semi-classical gravity (large N) limit: they scale as
N_{eff}^{2-n} with N_{eff} proportional to ln(k/Lambda) where k is a typical
momentum. Our analysis thus confirms the interpretation of the cascading gauge
theories as renormalizable four-dimensional quantum field theories with an
effective number of degrees of freedom which logarithmically increases with the
energy.Comment: 47 pages, no figure
From Fake Supergravity to Superstars
The fake supergravity method is applied to 5-dimensional asymptotically AdS
spacetimes containing gravity coupled to a real scalar and an abelian gauge
field. The motivation is to obtain bulk solutions with R x S^3 symmetry in
order to explore the AdS/CFT correspondence when the boundary gauge theory is
on R x S^3. A fake supergravity action, invariant under local supersymmetry
through linear order in fermion fields, is obtained. The gauge field makes
things more restrictive than in previous applications of fake supergravity
which allowed quite general scalar potentials. Here the superpotential must
take the form W(\phi) ~ exp(-k\phi) + c exp(2\phi/(3k)), and the only freedom
is the choice of the constant k. The fermion transformation rules of fake
supergravity lead to fake Killing spinor equations. From their integrability
conditions, we obtain first order differential equations which we solve
analytically to find singular electrically charged solutions of the Lagrangian
field equations. A Schwarzschild mass term can be added to produce a horizon
which shields the singularity. The solutions, which include "superstars", turn
out to be known in the literature. We compute their holographic parameters.Comment: 42 pages, 3 figure
Generalized instantons in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory and spinorial geometry
Using spinorial geometry techniques, we classify the supersymmetric solutions
of euclidean super Yang-Mills theory. These backgrounds represent
generalizations of instantons with nontrivial scalar fields turned on, and
satisfy some constraints that bear a similarity with the Hitchin equations, and
contain the Donaldson equations as a special subcase. It turns out that these
constraints can be obtained by dimensional reduction of the octonionic
instanton equations, and may be rephrased in terms of a selfduality-like
condition for a complex connection. We also show that the supersymmetry
conditions imply the equations of motion only partially.Comment: 29 pages, 3 tables. v2: references added. v3: conclusion extended,

Holographic Uniformization
We derive and study supergravity BPS flow equations for M5 or D3 branes
wrapping a Riemann surface. They take the form of novel geometric flows
intrinsically defined on the surface. Their dual field-theoretic interpretation
suggests the existence of solutions interpolating between an arbitrary metric
in the UV and the constant-curvature metric in the IR. We confirm this
conjecture with a rigorous global existence proof.Comment: 52 pages, 3 figure
The Generalized Green-Schwarz Mechanism for Type IIB Orientifolds with D3- and D7-Branes
In this paper, we work out in detail the tadpole cancellation conditions as
well as the generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism for type IIB orientifold
compactifications with D3- and D7-branes. We find that not only the well-known
D3- and D7-tadpole conditions have to be satisfied, but in general also the
vanishing of the induced D5-brane charges leads to a non-trivial constraint. In
fact, for the case the latter condition is important for
the cancellation of chiral anomalies. We also extend our analysis by including
D9- as well as D5-branes and determine the rules for computing the chiral
spectrum of the combined system.Comment: 33+7 pages; 2 figures; v2: references added; v3: published versio
Wormholes in AdS
We construct a few Euclidean supergravity solutions with multiple boundaries.
We consider examples where the corresponding boundary field theory is well
defined on each boundary. We point out that these configurations are puzzling
from the AdS/CFT point of view. A proper understanding of the AdS/CFT
dictionary for these cases might yield some information about the physics of
closed universes.Comment: 38 pages, 2 figures, harvmac. v2: minor typos corrected and

Fluxes, moduli fixing and MSSM-like vacua in a simple IIA orientifold
We study the effects of adding RR, NS and metric fluxes on a T^6/(\Omega
(-1)^{F_L} I_3) Type IIA orientifold. By using the effective flux-induced
superpotential we obtain Minkowski or AdS vacua with broken or unbroken
supersymmetry. In the Minkowski case some combinations of real moduli remain
undetermined, whereas all can be stabilized in the AdS solutions. Many flux
parameters are available which are unconstrained by RR tadpole cancellation
conditions allowing to locate the minima at large volume and small dilaton. We
also find that in AdS supersymmetric vacua with metric fluxes, the overall flux
contribution to RR tadpoles can vanish or have opposite sign to that of
D6-branes, allowing for new model-building possibilities. In particular, we
construct the first N=1 supersymmetric intersecting D6-brane models with
MSSM-like spectrum and with all closed string moduli stabilized. Some
axion-like fields remain undetermined but they are precisely required to give
St\"uckelberg masses to (potentially anomalous) U(1) brane fields. We show that
the cancellation of the Freed-Witten anomaly guarantees that the axions with
flux-induced masses are orthogonal to those giving masses to the U(1)'s.
Cancellation of such anomalies also guarantees that the D6-branes in our N=1
supersymmetric AdS vacua are calibrated so that they are forced to preserve one
unbroken supersymmetry.Comment: 61 pages, Latex, v2: added references, v3: minor correction
The Morphology of N=6 Chern-Simons Theory
We tabulate various properties of the language of N=6 Chern-Simons Theory, in
the sense of Polyakov. Specifically we enumerate and compute character formulas
for all syllables of up to four letters, i.e. all irreducible representations
of OSp(6|4) built from up to four fundamental fields of the ABJM theory. We
also present all tensor product decompositions for up to four singletons and
list the (cyclically invariant) four-letter words, which correspond to
single-trace operators of length four. As an application of these results we
use the two-loop dilatation operator to compute the leading correction to the
Hagedorn temperature of the weakly-coupled planar ABJM theory on R \times S^2.Comment: 41 pages, 1 figure; v2: minor correction
Non-Perturbative Effects on a Fractional D3-Brane
In this note we study the N=1 abelian gauge theory on the world volume of a
single fractional D3-brane. In the limit where gravitational interactions are
not completely decoupled we find that a superpotential and a fermionic bilinear
condensate are generated by a D-brane instanton effect. A related situation
arises for an isolated cycle invariant under an orientifold projection, even in
the absence of any gauge theory brane. Moreover, in presence of supersymmetry
breaking background fluxes, such instanton configurations induce new couplings
in the 4-dimensional effective action, including non-perturbative contributions
to the cosmological constant and non-supersymmetric mass terms.Comment: 18 pages, v3: refs adde
Bloom-Gilman duality of inelastic structure functions in nucleon and nuclei
The Bloom-Gilman local duality of the inelastic structure function of the
proton, the deuteron and light complex nuclei is investigated using available
experimental data in the squared four-momentum transfer range from 0.3 to 5
(GeV/c)**2. The results of our analysis suggest that the onset of the
Bloom-Gilman local duality is anticipated in complex nuclei with respect to the
case of the protonand the deuteron. A possible interpretation of this result in
terms of a rescaling effect is discussed with particular emphasis to the
possibility of reproducing the damping of the nucleon-resonance transitions
observed in recent electroproduction data off nuclei.Comment: revised version, to appear in Physical Review
