Low Temperature AC Conductivity in BSCCO (2212)

We report measurements of anamolously large dissipative conductivities in BiSrCaCuO(2212) at low temperatures. We have measured the complex conductivity of BSCCO thin films at 100-600 GHz as a function of doping from the underdoped to the overdoped state. At low temperatures there exists a residual dissipative conductivity which scales with the T=0 superfluid density as the doping is varied. This residual dissipative conductivity is larger than the possible contribution from a thermal population of quasiparticles at the d-wave gap nodes.Comment: Submitted to the Proceedings of the 22nd International Low Temperature Physics Conference. Examining the consistency and coherence of values in young children using a new animated values instrument

The existence and formation of values across the lifespan has been of particular interest to psychology researchers for decades. In this study we examine the consistency and coherence of values in early childhood using a new animated instrument - the AVI (Animated Values Instrument). Based on Schwartz's circular values structure the AVI is a multi-sensory instrument designed to enhance young children's understanding of each value. We present evidence from a sample of 329 five to twelve year-olds that shows children, as young as five, make consistent choices about their own values. Results show that consistency of choice is high for the majority of children across all age groups and complete consistency of choice in almost all older children. We also demonstrate coherence in the circular structure of values in young children at the sample and individual level for the first time. The discussion outlines new directions for future research on the development of values in young children

Excited Baryons from the FLIC Fermion Action

    Get PDF
Masses of positive and negative parity excited nucleons and hyperons are calculated in quenched lattice QCD using an O(a^2) improved gluon action and a fat-link clover fermion action in which only the irrelevant operators are constructed with fat links. The results are in agreement with earlier N* simulations with improved actions, and exhibit a clear mass splitting between the nucleon and its parity partner, as well as a small mass splitting between the two low-lying J^P={1/2}^- N* states. Study of different Lambda interpolating fields suggests a similar splitting between the lowest two {1/2}^- Lambda* states, although the empirical mass suppression of the Lambda*(1405) is not seen.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, Lattice2002(QCD Spectrum and Quark Masses

YREC: The Yale Rotating Stellar Evolution Code

    Get PDF
The stellar evolution code YREC is outlined with emphasis on its applications to helio- and asteroseismology. The procedure for calculating calibrated solar and stellar models is described. Other features of the code such as a non-local treatment of convective core overshoot, and the implementation of a parametrized description of turbulence in stellar models, are considered in some detail. The code has been extensively used for other astrophysical applications, some of which are briefly mentioned at the end of the paper.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, ApSS accepte

Magnetic-Field Induced First-Order Transition in the Frustrated XY Model on a Stacked Triangular Lattice

The results of extensive Monte Carlo simulations of magnetic-field induced transitions in the xy model on a stacked triangular lattice with antiferromagnetic intraplane and ferromagnetic interplane interactions are discussed. A low-field transition from the paramagnetic to a 3-state (Potts) phase is found to be very weakly first order with behavior suggesting tricriticality at zero field. In addition to clarifying some long-standing ambiguity concerning the nature of this Potts-like transition, the present work also serves to further our understanding of the critical behavior at TNT_N, about which there has been much controversy.Comment: 10 pages (RevTex 3.0), 4 figures available upon request, CRPS-93-0

Magnetic Phase Diagram of the Ferromagnetically Stacked Triangular XY Antiferromagnet: A Finite-Size Scaling Study

Histogram Monte-Carlo simulation results are presented for the magnetic-field -- temperature phase diagram of the XY model on a stacked triangular lattice with antiferromagnetic intraplane and ferromagnetic interplane interactions. Finite-size scaling results at the various transition boundaries are consistent with expectations based on symmetry arguments. Although a molecular-field treatment of the Hamiltonian fails to reproduce the correct structure for the phase diagram, it is demonstrated that a phenomenological Landau-type free-energy model contains all the esstential features. These results serve to complement and extend our earlier work [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 48}, 3840 (1993)].Comment: 5 pages (RevTex 3.0), 6 figures available upon request, CRPS 93-

Determination of steroid estrogens in wastewater by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the requirement for, and presents an analytical procedure for, the determination of four unconjugated steroid hormones and a conjugated steroid (estrone-3-sulfate) in wastewaters. The method quantifies the steroids by LC/MS/MS following solid phase extraction and a two stage clean-up procedure. Samples were extracted using C18 cartridges and eluates were then purified by gel permeation chromatography, followed by a further clean-up step on an aminopropyl cartridge. The limits of detection achieved were 0.2 ng l-1 for estriol, 17β-estradiol and 17α-ethinylestradiol, and 0.1 ng l-1 for estrone and the conjugate. The robustness of the method was demonstrated by achieving recoveries of >83% for all steroids in settled sewage and final effluent samples with relative standard deviations of 0.5 - 12%. The method was used to analyse a range of samples from a wastewater treatment works in south east England which demonstrated a >80% removal for estrone, estradiol and estriol with little impact on concentrations of ethinylestradiol or the conjugate

Spin-3/2 Nucleon and Delta Baryons in Lattice QCD

We present first results for masses of spin-3/2 N and Delta baryons in lattice QCD using Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermions. Spin-3/2 interpolating fields providing overlap with both spin-3/2 and spin-1/2 states are considered. In the isospin-1/2 sector, we observe, after appropriate spin and parity projection, a strong signal for the J^P=3/2^- state together with a weak but discernible signal for the 3/2^+ state with a mass splitting near that observed experimentally. We also find good agreement between the 1/2^+/- masses and earlier nucleon mass simulations with the standard spin-1/2 interpolating field. For the isospin-3/2 Delta states, clear mass splittings are observed between the various 1/2^+/- and 3/2^+/- channels, with the calculated level orderings in good agreement with those observed empirically.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 table
