The influence of pre-fermentative maceration and ageing factors on ester profile and marker determination of Pedro Ximenez sparkling wines
The influence of pre-fermentative maceration and ageing factors on the ester profiles of Pedro Ximenez sparkling wines was evaluated. The pre-fermentative maceration consisted of the skin-maceration of musts at 10 degrees C for 6 h. The sparkling wines were produced following the Champenoise method. Samples were monitored at 3, 6 and 9 months of ageing on lees. Sparkling wines with pre fermentative maceration displayed higher contents of ethyl esters of branched acids and cinnamates. Meanwhile, those without maceration showed higher levels of ethyl esters of fatty acids and higher alcohol acetates. The study of statistical interactions elucidated different hydrolytic kinetics and developments in higher alcohol acetates and ethyl esters of branched acids during ageing. The application of a dual criterion based on univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate analyses (OPLS-DA) allowed us to identify new potential volatile markers related to pre-fermentative maceration and ageing time, reported for the first time in sparkling wines
Assessment of the corneal collagen organization after chemical burn using second harmonic generation microscopy
The organization of the corneal stoma is modified due to different factors, including pathology, surgery or external damage. Here the changes in the organization of the corneal collagen fibers during natural healing after chemical burn are investigated using second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging. Moreover, the structure tensor (ST) was used as an objective tool for morphological analyses at different time points after burn (up to 6 months). Unlike control corneas that showed a regular distribution, the collagen pattern at 1 month of burn presented a non-organized arrangement. SHG signal levels noticeably decreased and individual fibers were hardly visible. Over time, the healing process led to a progressive re-organization of the fibers that could be quantified through the ST. At 6 months, the stroma distribution reached values similar to those of control eyes and a dominant direction of the fibers re-appeared. The present results show that SHG microscopy imaging combined with the ST method is able to objectively monitor the temporal regeneration of the corneal organization after chemical burn. Future implementations of this approach into clinically adapted devices would help to diagnose and quantify corneal changes, not only due to chemical damages, but also as a result of disease or surgical procedures
Estimation des effets des facteurs fixes sur les poids des agneaux et sur la prolificité des brebis de la race ovine Segurana dans le sud-est espagnol
L'analyse réalisée sur les poids et les gains moyens quotidiens de 7294 agneaux a montré que les ~ffets des facteurs: année, saison et type de naissance, ainsi que ceux' du sexe de l'agneau, de l'âge de la mère à la mise-bas et de la covariable âge de l'agneau au sevrage, sont hautement significatifs sur le poids et sur la vitesse de croissance. D'autre part, l'analyse réalisée sur 5921. mises-bas de 1279 brebis a montré que les effets des facteurs: année d'agnelage, son interaction avec la saison d'agnelage-et l'âge de la brebis à la mise-bas sont hautement significatifs sur la prolificité. Par ailleurs, il ressort de ces analyses que la permanence des brebis dans l'élevage, au delà de leur âge de réforme (8-9 ans), a des répercussions négatives aussi bien sur leur prolificité que sur les performances pondérales de leur descendance. Aussi, les résultats obtenus suggèrent qu'il ne faut pas sevrer trop tardivement les agneaux à croissance lente, pour bien profiter de leur vitesse de croissance après sevrage, qui est généralement supérieure à celle d'avant sevrage
Nature of the spin-glass phase at experimental length scales
We present a massive equilibrium simulation of the three-dimensional Ising
spin glass at low temperatures. The Janus special-purpose computer has allowed
us to equilibrate, using parallel tempering, L=32 lattices down to T=0.64 Tc.
We demonstrate the relevance of equilibrium finite-size simulations to
understand experimental non-equilibrium spin glasses in the thermodynamical
limit by establishing a time-length dictionary. We conclude that
non-equilibrium experiments performed on a time scale of one hour can be
matched with equilibrium results on L=110 lattices. A detailed investigation of
the probability distribution functions of the spin and link overlap, as well as
of their correlation functions, shows that Replica Symmetry Breaking is the
appropriate theoretical framework for the physically relevant length scales.
Besides, we improve over existing methodologies to ensure equilibration in

Childhood cognitive ability accounts for associations between cognitive ability and brain cortical thickness in old age
Associations between brain cortical tissue volume and cognitive function in old age are frequently interpreted as suggesting that preservation of cortical tissue is the foundation of successful cognitive aging. However, this association could also, in part, reflect a lifelong association between cognitive ability and cortical tissue. We analyzed data on 588 subjects from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 who had intelligence quotient (IQ) scores from the same cognitive test available at both 11 and 70 years of age as well as high-resolution brain magnetic resonance imaging data obtained at approximately 73 years of age. Cortical thickness was estimated at 81 924 sampling points across the cortex for each subject using an automated pipeline. Multiple regression was used to assess associations between cortical thickness and the IQ measures at 11 and 70 years. Childhood IQ accounted for more than two-third of the association between IQ at 70 years and cortical thickness measured at age 73 years. This warns against ascribing a causal interpretation to the association between cognitive ability and cortical tissue in old age based on assumptions about, and exclusive reference to, the aging process and any associated disease. Without early-life measures of cognitive ability, it would have been tempting to conclude that preservation of cortical thickness in old age is a foundation for successful cognitive aging when, instead, it is a lifelong association. This being said, results should not be construed as meaning that all studies on aging require direct measures of childhood IQ, but as suggesting that proxy measures of prior cognitive function can be useful to take into consideration

Charge and spin configurations in the coupled quantum dots with Coulomb correlations induced by tunneling current
We investigated the peculiarities of non-equilibrium charge states and spin
configurations in the system of two strongly coupled quantum dots (QDs) weakly
connected to the electrodes in the presence of Coulomb correlations. We
analyzed the modification of non-equilibrium charge states and different spin
configurations of the system in a wide range of applied bias voltage and
revealed well pronounced ranges of system parameters where negative tunneling
conductivity appears due to the Coulomb correlations.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
An overview of jets and outflows in stellar mass black holes
In this book chapter, we will briefly review the current empirical
understanding of the relation between accretion state and and outflows in
accreting stellar mass black holes. The focus will be on the empirical
connections between X-ray states and relativistic (`radio') jets, although we
are now also able to draw accretion disc winds into the picture in a systematic
way. We will furthermore consider the latest attempts to measure/order jet
power, and to compare it to other (potentially) measurable quantities, most

Accretion and ejection in black-hole X-ray transients
Aims: We summarize the current observational picture of the outbursts of
black-hole X-ray transients (BHTs), based on the evolution traced in a
hardness-luminosity diagram (HLD), and we offer a physical interpretation.
Methods: The basic ingredient in our interpretation is the Poynting-Robertson
Cosmic Battery (PRCB, Contopoulos & Kazanas 1998), which provides locally the
poloidal magnetic field needed for the ejection of the jet. In addition, we
make two assumptions, easily justifiable. The first is that the mass-accretion
rate to the black hole in a BHT outburst has a generic bell-shaped form. This
is guaranteed by the observational fact that all BHTs start their outburst and
end it at the quiescent state. The second assumption is that at low accretion
rates the accretion flow is geometrically thick, ADAF-like, while at high
accretion rates it is geometrically thin.
Results: Both, at the beginning and the end of an outburst, the PRCB
establishes a strong poloidal magnetic field in the ADAF-like part of the
accretion flow, and this explains naturally why a jet is always present in the
right part of the HLD. In the left part of the HLD, the accretion flow is in
the form of a thin disk, and such a disk cannot sustain a strong poloidal
magnetic filed. Thus, no jet is expected in this part of the HLD. The
counterclockwise traversal of the HLD is explained as follows: the poloidal
magnetic field in the ADAF forces the flow to remain ADAF and the source to
move upwards in the HLD rather than to turn left. Thus, the history of the
system determines the counterclockwise traversal of the HLD. As a result, no
BHT is expected to ever traverse the entire HLD curve in the clockwise
direction.
Conclusions: We offer a physical interpretation of accretion and ejection in
BHTs with only one parameter, the mass transfer rate.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
