Breadth-first serialisation of trees and rational languages
We present here the notion of breadth-first signature and its relationship
with numeration system theory. It is the serialisation into an infinite word of
an ordered infinite tree of finite degree. We study which class of languages
corresponds to which class of words and, more specifically, using a known
construction from numeration system theory, we prove that the signature of
rational languages are substitutive sequences.Comment: 15 page
Digital sum problems and substitutions on a finite alphabet
AbstractLet (ui)i ≥ 1 be a fixed point for a substitution σ on a finite alphabet A and for a ∈ A, f(a) a real number. We establish an asymptotic formula for S(N) = Σn < NΣi ≤ nf(ui) in the case where the second largest eigenvalue of the substitution matrix equals one and under some additional hypothesis. More precisely S(N) = αN logθ N + NF(N) + o(N), where the real number α depending on σ and f is explicitly determined and θ > 1 is the largest eigenvalue of the substitution matrix; F is a continuous, nowhere differentiable (if α∈0), real function such that F(θx) = F(x) for all x>0. Using the same method we prove a similar formula for Σn < N s(n), s(n) the sum of digits function with respect to the system of numeration associated with σ. These formulae generalize some recent work concerning digital sum problems
A novel programmable lysozyme-based lysis system in Pseudomonas putida for biopolymer production
Indexación: Scopus; Web of Science.Cell lysis is crucial for the microbial production of industrial fatty acids, proteins, biofuels, and biopolymers. In this work, we developed a novel programmable lysis system based on the heterologous expression of lysozyme. The inducible lytic system was tested in two Gram-negative bacterial strains, namely Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida KT2440. Before induction, the lytic system did not significantly arrest essential physiological parameters in the recombinant E. coli (ECPi) and P. putida (JBOi) strain such as specific growth rate and biomass yield under standard growth conditions. A different scenario was observed in the recombinant JBOi strain when subjected to PHA-producing conditions, where biomass production was reduced by 25% but the mcl-PHA content was maintained at about 30% of the cell dry weight. Importantly, the genetic construct worked well under PHA-producing conditions (nitrogen-limiting phase), where more than 95% of the cell population presented membrane disruption 16 h post induction, with 75% of the total synthesized biopolymer recovered at the end of the fermentation period. In conclusion, this new lysis system circumvents traditional, costly mechanical and enzymatic cell-disrupting procedures.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-04741-2.pd
Alcohol policy changes and 22-year trends in individual alcohol consumption in a Swiss adult population: a 1993-2014 cross-sectional population-based study.
Evidence on the impact of legislative changes on individual alcohol consumption is limited. Using an observational study design, we assessed trends in individual alcohol consumption of a Swiss adult population following the public policy changes that took place between 1993 and 2014, while considering individual characteristics and secular trends.
Cross-sectional study.
Swiss general adult population.
Data from 18 963 participants were collected between 1993 and 2014 (aged 18-75 years).
We used data from the 'Bus Santé' study, an annual health survey conducted in random samples of the adult population in the State of Geneva, Switzerland. Individual alcohol intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Individual characteristics including education were self-reported. 7 policy changes (6 about alcohol and 1 about tobacco) that occurred between 1993 and 2014 defined 6 different periods. We predicted alcohol intake using quantile regression with multivariate analysis for each period adjusting for participants' characteristics and tested significance periods. Sensitivity analysis was performed including drinkers only, the 10th centile of highest drinkers and smoker's status.
Between 1993 and 2014, participants' individual alcohol intake decreased from 7.1 to 5.4 g/day (24% reduction, p<0.001). Men decreased their alcohol intake by 34% compared with 22% for women (p<0.001). The decrease in alcohol intake remained significant when considering drinkers only (28% decrease, p<0.001) and the 10th centile highest drinkers (24% decrease, p<0.001). Consumption of all alcoholic beverages decreased between 1993 and 2014 except for the moderate consumption of beer, which increased. After adjustment for participants' characteristics and secular trends, no independent association between alcohol legislative changes and individual alcohol intake was found.
Between 1993 and 2014, alcohol consumption decreased in the Swiss adult population independently of policy changes
Evolution of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with mild coronary artery disease studied by serial quantitative coronary angiography at 2 and 4 years follow up
AIMS: Angiographic studies on the natural course of both focal and diffuse coronary atherosclerosis have not been performed before, but can both be assessed by quantitative coronary angiography. The objective of this study was to describe the natural course of focal and diffuse coronary atherosclerosis over time. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 129 patients with mild coronary artery disease, but not on lipid-lowering medication, three coronary angiograms were made each 2 years apart. Nine hundred and sixty five angiographically diseased and non-diseased segments were analysed by quantitative coronary angiography. Mean lumen diameter and minimal lumen diameter were used as measures of diffuse and focal coronary atherosclerosis. Mean lumen diameter and minimum lumen diameter decreased by 0.02 and 0.03 mm per year. The rate of progression was similar in the angiographically non-diseased, as in the mildly and moderately diseased segments. Progression of diffuse coronary atherosclerosis was largest in severely stenosed lesions (percentage diameter stenosis > or = 50%) and in the right coronary artery with a loss of 0.19 mm and 0.16 mm in mean lumen diameter. Progression of focal disease was most prominent in new and mild lesions and the right coronary artery, with a decrease in minimum lumen diameter of 0.34 mm and 0.22 mm. In most subgroups, progression occurred gradually over time. On a per segment level, progression and the occurrence of new lesions occurred in 4.4% and 4.2%. Regression and disappearance of a lesions was found in 2.3% and 1.9%. On a per patient level, 36% were progressors, 12% had a mixed response, 36% were stable, and 16% were regressors. CONCLUSION: Diffuse and focal coronary atherosclerosis progressed at the same rate in the first and second 2 years in stenosed and non-stenosed segments. The rate of coronary atherosclerosis progression was small, but was higher for focal than for diffuse disease. A minority of lesions progressed and spontaneous regression was rare

Patterns in rational base number systems
Number systems with a rational number as base have gained interest
in recent years. In particular, relations to Mahler's 3/2-problem as well as
the Josephus problem have been established. In the present paper we show that
the patterns of digits in the representations of positive integers in such a
number system are uniformly distributed. We study the sum-of-digits function of
number systems with rational base and use representations w.r.t. this
base to construct normal numbers in base in the spirit of Champernowne. The
main challenge in our proofs comes from the fact that the language of the
representations of integers in these number systems is not context-free. The
intricacy of this language makes it impossible to prove our results along
classical lines. In particular, we use self-affine tiles that are defined in
certain subrings of the ad\'ele ring and Fourier
analysis in . With help of these tools we are able to
reformulate our results as estimation problems for character sums
Geoenvironmental Study of Gold Mining Tailings in a Circular Economy Context – Santa Barbara, Minas Gerais, Brazil
We characterized the tailings from the Santa Barbara tailings dam, which is located in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, to: (i) identify its chemical, mineralogical, and metallurgical properties, and (ii) perform an environmental evaluation of the water at the surface of the tailings facility. The potential recovery of elements such as Sb, As, and Au was also considered for potential tailings reuse. The water was alkaline, with maximum pH values of ≈ 10, and contained potentially toxic elements, such as Sb (up to 0.500 mg/L), As (up to 0.080 mg/L), and Cu (up to 20 mg/L). Gold enrichment areas were found in the tailings dam, with concentrations up to 0.5 g/t. Alignment exists among tailings management, demand for critical raw materials, and increased interest in the processing of low-grade ores and mining waste, which is important in the context of the circular economy. They suggest that valorisation of tailings, although challenging, can be achieved by economic recovery of the more valuable metals
K-Space at TRECVID 2008
In this paper we describe K-Space’s participation in
TRECVid 2008 in the interactive search task. For 2008
the K-Space group performed one of the largest interactive
video information retrieval experiments conducted
in a laboratory setting. We had three institutions participating
in a multi-site multi-system experiment. In
total 36 users participated, 12 each from Dublin City
University (DCU, Ireland), University of Glasgow (GU,
Scotland) and Centrum Wiskunde and Informatica (CWI,
the Netherlands). Three user interfaces were developed,
two from DCU which were also used in 2007 as well as
an interface from GU. All interfaces leveraged the same
search service. Using a latin squares arrangement, each
user conducted 12 topics, leading in total to 6 runs per
site, 18 in total. We officially submitted for evaluation 3
of these runs to NIST with an additional expert run using
a 4th system. Our submitted runs performed around
the median. In this paper we will present an overview of
the search system utilized, the experimental setup and a
preliminary analysis of our results
