    Validation of Maximal Heart Rate Prediction Equations based on Sex and Physical Activity Status

The purpose of the study was to determine if measured maximal heart rate (HRmax) was affected by sex or aerobic training status, and to determine the accuracy of three common clinical age-prediction maximal heart rate regression equations used to predict HRmax: HRmax = 220 – age, HRmax = 226 – age, and HRmax = 208 – (0.7 ∙ age). Fifty-two participants in total, 30 of which were in the active group (15 M, 15 F) and 22 subjects in the sedentary group (9 M, 13 F), within the age range of 18-25 years and with a normal BMI (18.5-24.9 kg∙m-2) underwent a Bruce maximal treadmill exercise protocol. The effect of sex and training status on HRmax was analyzed through a two-way ANOVA, and the effect of sex, aerobic training status, and regression equation on accuracy of the HRmax prediction was assessed with a three-way ANOVA (α=0.05). Overall, males had a higher HRmax than females (198.3 v. 190.4 beats • min-1 , p\u3c.001) and sedentary individuals had higher measured HRmax than active individuals (197.3 v. 191.4 beats • min-1, p=.002). Furthermore, HRmax = 208 – (0.7 ∙ age)(equation 3) calculated the smallest signed and unsigned residuals from the difference between observed HRmax and predicted HRmax values for the significant main effects of equation (3), equation x sex (females x 3), and equation x activity level (active x 3). Therefore, based on our results, we conclude that HRmax = 208 – (0.7 ∙ age) has greater accuracy than the other two equations studied for predicting observed values of HRmax in 18-25 year olds

    Higgsino Dark Matter in a SUGRA Model with Nonuniversal Gaugino Masses

    We study a specific SUGRA model with nonuniversal gaugino masses as an alternative to the minimal SUGRA model in the context of supersymmetric dark matter. The lightest supersymmetric particle in this model comes out to be a Higgsino dominated instead of a bino dominated lightest neutralino. The thermal relic density of this Higgsino dark matter is somewhat lower than the cosmologically favoured range, which means it may be only a subdominant component of the cold dark matter. Nonetheless, it predicts favourable rates of indirect detection, which can be seen in square-km size neutrino telescopes.Comment: Version to appear in Phys. Rev. D.     Diagnostic criteria for initial orthostatic hypotension:a narrative review

    Abnormalities in orthostatic blood pressure changes upon active standing are associated with morbidity, mortality, and reduced quality of life. However, over the last decade, several population-based cohort studies have reported a remarkably high prevalence (between 25 and 70%) of initial orthostatic hypotension (IOH) among elderly individuals. This has raised the question as to whether the orthostatic blood pressure patterns in these community-dwelling elderly should truly be considered as pathological. If not, redefining of the systolic cutoff values for IOH (i.e., a value ≥ 40 mmHg in systolic blood pressure in the first 15 s after standing up) might be necessary to differ between normal aging and true pathology. Therefore, in this narrative review, we provide a critical analysis of the current reference values for the changes in systolic BP in the first 60 s after standing up and discuss how these values should be applied to large population studies. We will address factors that influence the magnitude of the systolic blood pressure changes following active standing and the importance of standardization of the stand-up test, which is a prerequisite for quantitative, between-subject comparisons of the postural hemodynamic response

    On the precision of the theoretical predictions for pi pi scattering

    In a recent paper, Pelaez and Yndurain evaluate some of the low energy observables of pi pi scattering and obtain flat disagreement with our earlier results. The authors work with unsubtracted dispersion relations, so that their results are very sensitive to the poorly known high energy behaviour of the scattering amplitude. They claim that the asymptotic representation we used is incorrect and propose an alternative one. We repeat their calculations on the basis of the standard, subtracted fixed-t dispersion relations, using their asymptotics. The outcome fully confirms our earlier findings. Moreover, we show that the Regge parametrization proposed by these authors for the region above 1.4 GeV violates crossing symmetry: Their ansatz is not consistent with the behaviour observed at low energies.Comment: Added more material, mostly in Sects. 7, 8 and 9, in support of the same conclusions.     ThermoElectric Transport Properties of a Chain of Quantum Dots with Self-Consistent Reservoirs

    We introduce a model for charge and heat transport based on the Landauer-Buttiker scattering approach. The system consists of a chain of NN quantum dots, each of them being coupled to a particle reservoir. Additionally, the left and right ends of the chain are coupled to two particle reservoirs. All these reservoirs are independent and can be described by any of the standard physical distributions: Maxwell-Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein. In the linear response regime, and under some assumptions, we first describe the general transport properties of the system. Then we impose the self-consistency condition, i.e. we fix the boundary values (T_L,\mu_L) and (T_R,mu_R), and adjust the parameters (T_i,mu_i), for i = 1,...,N, so that the net average electric and heat currents into all the intermediate reservoirs vanish. This condition leads to expressions for the temperature and chemical potential profiles along the system, which turn out to be independent of the distribution describing the reservoirs. We also determine the average electric and heat currents flowing through the system and present some numerical results, using random matrix theory, showing that these currents are typically governed by Ohm and Fourier laws.Comment: Minor changes (45 pages

    Ecological Assessment of Everyday Executive Functioning at Home and at School using the BRIEF Questionnaire following Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

    IntroductionCognitive and behavioural aspects of executive functioning (EF) are frequently impaired following childhood TBI. The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) questionnaire provides an ecological assessment of EFs in everyday life in home and school environments. The aims of this study were to describe the dysexecutive disorders in children with TBI using the BRIEF; to compare parent- and teacher-ratings and to analyse the demographic and medical variables influencing outcome.MethodsParticipants: Children/adolescents aged 5–17 years 11 months, referred to a paediatric rehabilitation department following TBI. Outcome measures: the parent–and the teacher-report of the BRIEF were collected during neuropsychological assessment (2009–2014), as well as the teacher-report (from 2014). Age at injury and assessment, parental education and TBI severity were collected.Results194 patients (142 boys) participated in the study [mild (n=13), moderate (n=12) or severe (n=169: mean duration of coma 7.2 days; SD=6.5)]. 193 parent-reports and 28 complete teacher reports of the BRIEF were available. Mean age at injury/assessment were 6.9 (SD=4.4), and 11.8 (SD=3.5) years respectively. According to parent-ratings, children had significantly elevated scores in all BRIEF indices [Global Executive Composite (GEC), Behaviour Regulation Index (BRI), Metacognition Index (MI)], and subscales (mean T-scores 61–64; all P<.0001), with 24% to 48.0% scoring in the clinical range. Teachers’ ratings indicated similar deficits in all sub-scales (mean T-scores 63–70; all P<.001), with 39.3–57.2% scoring in the clinical range. For patients with teacher and parent-reports (n=27), no significant difference was found between parent and teacher ratings, which were significantly correlated (r: .44–.72). Regression analyses indicated that GEC was significantly predicted by older age at assessment. The regression model for BRI was not significant. For MI, younger age at injury and older age at assessment were significant predictors.Discussion and conclusionThis study highlights elevated levels of executive dysfunction in everyday life following childhood TBI, evident in home and school environments. Younger age at injury seems to influence the cognitive rather than the behavioural aspects of EFs, whereas older age at assessment is related to higher levels of complaints, probably due to the increasing levels of expectations

    A brief review is first presented of attempts to predict stable multiquark states within current models of hadron spectroscopy.     Charged and Pseudoscalar Higgs production at a Muon Collider

    We consider single charged Higgs (H±H^{\pm}) and pseudoscalar Higgs (A0A^0) production in association with a gauge boson at μ+μ\mu^+\mu^- colliders. We find that the tree-level t-channel and s-channel contributions to μ+μH±W,A0Z\mu^+\mu^-\to H^{\pm}W^{\mp}, A^0Z are enhanced for large values of tanβ\tan\beta, allowing sizeable cross-sections whose analogies at e+ee^+e^- colliders would be very small.
