    Fisheries and reproductive biology of Octopus vulgaris (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) in the Gulf of Alicante (Northwestern Mediterranean)

    The common octopus Octopus vulgarisCuvier, 1797 is the most fished cephalopod species along the Spanish coasts. Its catches are highly fluctuating due to the short life cycle of the species and to the annual variability of the recruitment pattern, strongly dependent on the environmental conditions affecting the eggs and paralarvae. This study examines the common octopus fishery, the catch composition, and the main features of the reproductive biology of this species in the Gulf of Alicante (Spanish Eastern coast, Western Mediterranean FAO division 37.1.1). The common octopus fishery was studied analysing the monthly landing and effort data by fishing gear from 1994 to 2005. Monthly samplings of the commercial O. vulgarislandings from trawlers and clay pots from January 2004 to December 2005 resulted in the measuring of 1833 specimens to enable analysis of the catch composition, and allowed the biological sampling of 1176 individuals to provide the reproductive parameters of the species in the study area. The length-weight relationship calculated for the species was BW = 0.51 * DML 2.87. The yearly sex ratios (males:females) were 1:1 (trawl, 2004), 1:0.74 (trawl, 2005), and 1:0.88 (clay pots, 2005). The size (dorsal mantle length, DML) at maturity of the species in the study area was 9.67 cm for males and 14.38 cm for females. The gonadosomatic index reached a peak between April and July for males and in July for females. The Fulton condition index was lower in both sexes between June and September, and for males in November-December, whereas for both sexes the values of the digestive gland index were at their maximum between June and December. The energy allocation between somatic and reproductive growth was investigated and the results suggested that the energy spent on reproduction mainly came from feeding, and not from energy stored in the mantle tissues or in the digestive glan

    The phylogenetically distinct early human embryo

    The phylogenetic singularity of the human embryo remains unresolved as cell types of the human blastocyst have resisted classification. Combining clustering of single cellular transcriptomes and dynamically expressed genes we resolve the cell types. This unveils the missing inner cell mass (ICM) and reveals classical step-wise development. Conversely, numerous features render our blastocyst phylogenetically distinct: unlike mice, our epiblast is self-renewing and we have blastocyst non-committed cells (NCCs), part of an apoptosis-mediated quality control/purging process. At the transcriptome-level all primate embryos are distinct as the pluripotent cell types are uniquely fast evolving. A substantial fraction of gene expression gain and loss events between human and new-world monkeys involve endogenous retrovirus H (ERVH). Human pluripotent cells are unique in which (H)ERVH's are active, the extent to which these modulate neighbour gene expression and their ability to suppress mutagenic transposable elements. Current naive cultures are heterogeneous and both developmentally and phylogenetically "confused"

    BLE is a widely used short-range technology which has gained a relevant position inside the Internet-of-Things (IoT) paradigm development thanks to its simplicity, low-power consumption, low-cost and robustness. New enhancements over BLE have focused on supporting mesh network topology. Compared to other mesh networks, BLE mesh has only considered a managed flooding protocol in its first version. Managed flooding may generally seem inefficient in many contexts, but it is a high desirable option when data transmission is urgent, the network is small or its configuration changes in a very dynamic way. Knowing the interest to many application contexts, this paper analyses the impact of tweaking several features over the reliability and efficiency of the mesh network. These features are configured and controlled in different layers: message repetition schemes, the transmission randomization, the election of a scheme based on an acknowledged or unacknowledged transmission, etc. In order to estimate the real performance of a mesh network deployment, this paper evaluates the effects of the interaction of the chosen parameters, their appropriate adjustment in relation with the characteristics of real implementations and the true overhead related to the whole protocol stack. The paper identifies configuration challenges, proposes network tuning criteria and outlines possible standard improvements. For this purpose, a detailed assessment on the implementation and execution of real devices has been performed with their chipset limitations

    Anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates and completely integrable dynamical systems

    A Gaussian ansatz for the wave function of two-dimensional harmonically trapped anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates is shown to lead, via a variational procedure, to a coupled system of two second-order, nonlinear ordinary differential equations. This dynamical system is shown to be in the general class of Ermakov systems. Complete integrability of the resulting Ermakov system is proven. Using the exact solution, collapse of the condensate is analyzed in detail. Time-dependence of the trapping potential is allowed

    Modelling the photo-Fenton oxidation of the pharmaceutical paracetamol in water including the effect of photon absorption (VRPA)

    A new model is proposed for the photo-Fenton oxidation of water contaminants including the effect of photon absorption (volumetric rate of photon absorption, VRPA), the effect of the geometry of the reactor and the illuminated volume to total volume ratio (Ri) in the reaction system. Fe(III) was found to be the main species in the aqueous solution responsible for photon absorption provided that hydrogen peroxide was not totally consumed. Paracetamol was used as model pollutant at a concentration of 1 mM to validate the model. The illuminated part of the raceway reactor configuration (total length of 80 cm) was operated at two liquid depths (5.0 and 2.5 cm) equivalent to two irradiated reactor volumes (2 and 1 L) and using Ri ratios in the range 0.30–0.65, which changed the dark reactor volume. These values are commonly found in photo-Fenton pilot plants for water treatment and purification. The model successfully fitted the temporal evolution of the dissolved oxygen (O2) and the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations and the evolution of the total organic carbon (TOC) in solution in both reactor geometries and for different illuminated volume to total volume ratios. The model can be easily extended to model other water contaminants and provides a robust method for process design, process control and optimization

    Characterisation of retrotransposon insertion polymorphisms in whole genome sequencing data from individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    The genetics of an individual is a crucial factor in understanding the risk of developing the neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). There is still a large proportion of the heritability of ALS, particularly in sporadic cases, to be understood. Among others, active transposable elements drive inter-individual variability, and in humans long interspersed element 1 (LINE1, L1), Alu and SINE-VNTR-Alu (SVA) retrotransposons are a source of polymorphic insertions in the population. We undertook a pilot study to characterise the landscape of non-reference retrotransposon insertion polymorphisms (non-ref RIPs) in 15 control and 15 ALS individuals’ whole genomes from Project MinE, an international project to identify potential genetic causes of ALS. The combination of two bioinformatics tools (mobile element locator tool (MELT) and TEBreak) identified on average 1250 Alu, 232 L1 and 77 SVA non-ref RIPs per genome across the 30 analysed. Further PCR validation of individual polymorphic retrotransposon insertions showed a similar level of accuracy for MELT and TEBreak. Our preliminary study did not identify a specific RIP or a significant difference in the total number of non-ref RIPs in ALS compared to control genomes. The use of multiple bioinformatic tools improved the accuracy of non-ref RIP detection and our study highlights the potential importance of studying these elements further in ALS
