    Trademark or patent? The effects of market structure, customer type and venture capital financing on start-ups' IP decisions

    We analyze the initial intellectual property (IP) right of 4,703 start-up entrants in the US, distinguishing between trademark and patent applications. The results show that start-ups are more likely to file for a trademark instead of a patent when entering into more competitive market structures. Further, we find that start-ups with a focus on distribution that serves end-consumers are more likely to file for a trademark and that start-ups that operate upstream and sell to other businesses are more likely to file for a patent. Lastly, the external influences on a start-up‟s management, such as the involvement of a venture capitalist (VC), affect IP applications. The increased incentive of VC-backed start-ups to become operational on the market makes them more likely to file initial IP in the form of a trademark rather than a patent. Among other factors, we control for R&D and advertising intensity in the industry and distinguish between more technical and more service-driven industries

    On the origin of vanillyl alcohol oxidases

    Vanillyl alcohol oxidase (VAO) is a fungal flavoenzyme that converts a wide range of para-substituted phenols. The products of these conversions, e.g. vanillin, coniferyl alcohol and chiral aryl alcohols, are of interest for several industries. VAO is the only known fungal member of the 4-phenol oxidising (4PO) subgroup of the VAO/PCMH flavoprotein family. While the enzyme has been biochemically characterised in great detail, little is known about its physiological role and distribution in fungi. We have identified and analysed novel, fungal candidate VAOs and found them to be mostly present in Pezizomycotina and Agaricomycotina. The VAOs group into three clades, of which two clades do not have any characterised member. Interestingly, bacterial relatives of VAO do not form a single outgroup, but rather split up into two separate clades. We have analysed the distribution of candidate VAOs in fungi, as well as their genomic environment. VAOs are present in low frequency in species of varying degrees of relatedness and in regions of low synteny. These findings suggest that fungal VAOs may have originated from bacterial ancestors, obtained by fungi through horizontal gene transfer. Because the overall conservation of fungal VAOs varies between 60 and 30% sequence identity, we argue for a more reliable functional prediction using critical amino acid residues. We have defined a sequence motif P-x-x-x-x-S-x-G-[RK]-N-x-G-Y-G-[GS] that specifically recognizes 4PO enzymes of the VAO/PCMH family, as well as additional motifs that can help to further narrow down putative functions. We also provide an overview of fingerprint residues that are specific to VAOs

    A source path contribution analysis on tire noise using particle velocity sensors

    Road tire noise is an important topic of research where acoustic particle velocity based testing techniques can be expected to bring new insights. Modal analysis can be carried out using non contact particle velocity sensors, and PU sound probes can be used to measure the radiated sound without a need to use anechoic testing conditions. A further breakdown of the overall sound pressure levels measured in to its various sources can be made by applying a source path contribution analysis, using the PU probes to measure velocity, sound intensity and, for determining the reciprocal transfer path, the sound pressure. The concept of using this type of transfer path analysis will be outlined and illustrated by a tire noise case

    We analyse the initial IP applications of 4,703 start-ups in the U.S., distinguishing between trademark and patent applications. Our empirical results show that start-ups are more likely to file for trademarks instead of patents when entering markets with a higher market concentration. Furthermore, we find that start-ups that are primarily active in business-to-consumer markets instead of business-to-business markets are more likely to file trademarks. Finally, the involvement of a venture capitalist (VC) affects the initial IP application. VC-backed start-ups are more likely than other start-ups to file initial IP in the form of trademarks rather than patents. This paper contributes to research on the use of IP rights in start-ups and to the literature on new venture strategy

    Calcium phosphate:An alternative calcium compound for dietary prevention of colon cancer? a study on intestinal and faecal parameters in healthy volunteers

    In an effort to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer development, oral calcium carbonate supplementation has been used in previous studies for the precipitation of cytotoxic bile acids and fatty acids. In human intervention trials its effect on mucosal hyperproliferation in the colorectum has not always been satisfactory. Because the complexation of calcium and bile acids requires the formation of calcium phosphate, we performed an intervention study in 14 healthy volunteers, giving them 1,500 mg calcium as Ca3(PO4)2 for 1 week. The effects of tricalcium phosphate on luminal and faecal parameters of cytolytic activity were evaluated before, during, and after calcium phosphate supplementation. The cytolytic activity of faecal water and intestinal alkaline phosphatase activity in faecal water were not affected by supplemental calcium phosphate. In duodenal bile, the proportion of cholic acid tended to increase, whereas that of chenodeoxycholic acid tended to decrease during calcium phosphate supplementation. Neither concentrations of total and individual faecal bile acids, nor that of faecal fat were affected during calcium phosphate supplementation. It is suggested that, although phosphate is involved in bile acid precipitation, phosphate competes for calcium in the binding of fatty acids. This might possibly explain the unchanged cytolytic potency of faecal water, and therefore does not make tricalcium phosphate a suitable calcium compound for dietary intervention.</p
