Stable marriage with general preferences
We propose a generalization of the classical stable marriage problem. In our
model, the preferences on one side of the partition are given in terms of
arbitrary binary relations, which need not be transitive nor acyclic. This
generalization is practically well-motivated, and as we show, encompasses the
well studied hard variant of stable marriage where preferences are allowed to
have ties and to be incomplete. As a result, we prove that deciding the
existence of a stable matching in our model is NP-complete. Complementing this
negative result we present a polynomial-time algorithm for the above decision
problem in a significant class of instances where the preferences are
asymmetric. We also present a linear programming formulation whose feasibility
fully characterizes the existence of stable matchings in this special case.
Finally, we use our model to study a long standing open problem regarding the
existence of cyclic 3D stable matchings. In particular, we prove that the
problem of deciding whether a fixed 2D perfect matching can be extended to a 3D
stable matching is NP-complete, showing this way that a natural attempt to
resolve the existence (or not) of 3D stable matchings is bound to fail.Comment: This is an extended version of a paper to appear at the The 7th

Surface tension of the isotropic-nematic interface
We present the first calculations of the pressure tensor profile in the
vicinity of the planar interface between isotropic liquid and nematic liquid
crystal, using Onsager's density functional theory and computer simulation.
When the liquid crystal director is aligned parallel to the interface, the
situation of lowest free energy, there is a large tension on the nematic side
of the interface and a small compressive region on the isotropic side. By
contrast, for perpendicular alignment, the tension is on the isotropic side.
There is excellent agreement between theory and simulation both in the forms of
the pressure tensor profiles, and the values of the surface tension.Comment: Minor changes; to appear in Phys. Rev.
Molecular scale contact line hydrodynamics of immiscible flows
From extensive molecular dynamics simulations on immiscible two-phase flows,
we find the relative slipping between the fluids and the solid wall everywhere
to follow the generalized Navier boundary condition, in which the amount of
slipping is proportional to the sum of tangential viscous stress and the
uncompensated Young stress. The latter arises from the deviation of the
fluid-fluid interface from its static configuration. We give a continuum
formulation of the immiscible flow hydrodynamics, comprising the generalized
Navier boundary condition, the Navier-Stokes equation, and the Cahn-Hilliard
interfacial free energy. Our hydrodynamic model yields interfacial and velocity
profiles matching those from the molecular dynamics simulations at the
molecular-scale vicinity of the contact line. In particular, the behavior at
high capillary numbers, leading to the breakup of the fluid-fluid interface, is

Proton-proton scattering above 3 GeV/c
A large set of data on proton-proton differential cross sections, analyzing
powers and the double polarization parameter A_NN is analyzed employing the
Regge formalism. We find that the data available at proton beam momenta from 3
GeV/c to 50 GeV/c exhibit features that are very well in line with the general
characteristics of Regge phenomenology and can be described with a model that
includes the rho, omega, f_2, and a_2 trajectories and single Pomeron exchange.
Additional data, specifically for spin-dependent observables at forward angles,
would be very helpful for testing and refining our Regge model.Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures; revised version accepted for publication in

A Historiometric Examination of Machiavellianism and a New Taxonomy of Leadership
Although researchers have extensively examined the relationship between charismatic leadership and Machiavellianism (Deluga, 2001; Gardner & Avolio, 1995; House & Howell, 1992), there has been a lack of investigation of Machiavellianism in relation to alternative forms of outstanding leadership. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between Machiavellianism and a new taxonomy of outstanding leadership comprised of charismatic, ideological, and pragmatic leaders. Using an historiometric approach, raters assessed Machiavellianism via the communications of 120 outstanding leaders in organizations across the domains of business, political, military, and religious institutions. Academic biographies were used to assess twelve general performance measures as well as twelve general controls and five communication specific controls. The results indicated that differing levels of Machiavellianism is evidenced across the differing leader types as well as differing leader orientation. Additionally, Machiavellianism appears negatively related to performance, though less so when type and orientation are taken into account.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

Translation of Walter Noll’s “Derivation of the Fundamental Equations of Continuum Thermodynamics from Statistical Mechanics”
This article represents a translation of the original paper, "Die Herleitung der Grundgleichungen der Thermomechanik der Kontinua aus der Statistischen Mechanik", which was written by Walter Noll and appeared in the Journal of Rational Mechanics and Analysis 4 (1955), 627-646. In the original paper, Noll addressed and analyzed the seminal paper of Irving & Kirkwood, published five years earlier, on "The statistical mechanical theory of transport processes. IV, The Equations of Hydrodynamics." Noll gave new interpretations and provided a firm setting for ideas advanced by Irving & Kirkwood that clearly and directly related to the basic principles of continuum mechanics. This translation aims to expose the important contribution of Noll to a wider community of researchers at a time when the atomistic modeling of material behavior is being advanced. Noll's use of elementary mathematics to discover physical effects, to explain physical concepts, and to draw conclusions of a physical nature is exhibited. Noll's paper emerged from a report that he presented in a seminar at Indiana University in the summer of 1954.
