Numerical evaluation of the flange thickness effect on the contact stress and prying action in T-Stub steel connection
This paper presents a numerical study of «T-Stub» steel connections using FEM analyses. In such connections prying action phenomenon may take place. Prying action effect on the bolts has been studied before but the location of the prying action forces has always been simplified. The effect of the thickness of «T-Stub» flanges on contact areas between flanges and support base is investigated in this paper. A 3D finite element model is used and interface elements are employed for the investigation. Nonlinear FE analyses are undertaken on connection with different flange thickness and bolt preload with two bolts. Nonlinear gap elements are used as interfaces. Discussion and conclusions on contact areas and stresses, prying action distributions and resultant of loads on bolts in the «T-Stub» connections are presented.Peer Reviewe
Comment on ``Critical behavior of a two-species reaction-diffusion problem''
In a recent paper, de Freitas et al. [Phys. Rev. E 61, 6330 (2000)] presented
simulational results for the critical exponents of the two-species
reaction-diffusion system A + B -> 2B and B -> A in dimension d = 1. In
particular, the correlation length exponent was found as \nu = 2.21(5) in
contradiction to the exact relation \nu = 2/d. In this Comment, the symmetry
arguments leading to exact critical exponents for the universality class of
this reaction-diffusion system are concisely reconsidered
Activated Random Walkers: Facts, Conjectures and Challenges
We study a particle system with hopping (random walk) dynamics on the integer
lattice . The particles can exist in two states, active or
inactive (sleeping); only the former can hop. The dynamics conserves the number
of particles; there is no limit on the number of particles at a given site.
Isolated active particles fall asleep at rate , and then remain
asleep until joined by another particle at the same site. The state in which
all particles are inactive is absorbing. Whether activity continues at long
times depends on the relation between the particle density and the
sleeping rate . We discuss the general case, and then, for the
one-dimensional totally asymmetric case, study the phase transition between an
active phase (for sufficiently large particle densities and/or small )
and an absorbing one. We also present arguments regarding the asymptotic mean
hopping velocity in the active phase, the rate of fixation in the absorbing
phase, and survival of the infinite system at criticality. Using mean-field
theory and Monte Carlo simulation, we locate the phase boundary. The phase
transition appears to be continuous in both the symmetric and asymmetric
versions of the process, but the critical behavior is very different. The
former case is characterized by simple integer or rational values for critical
exponents (, for example), and the phase diagram is in accord with
the prediction of mean-field theory. We present evidence that the symmetric
version belongs to the universality class of conserved stochastic sandpiles,
also known as conserved directed percolation. Simulations also reveal an
interesting transient phenomenon of damped oscillations in the activity
density
Photoinduced antibacterial activity of the essential oils from Eugenia brasiliensis lam and Piper mosenii C. DC. by blue led light
The objective of this work was to evaluate the phytochemical composition and the antibacterial and antibiotic-modulating activities of the essential oils of Eugenia brasiliensis Lam (OEEb) and Piper mosenii C. DC (OEPm) singly or in association with blue LED (Light-emitting diode) light. The antibacterial and antibiotic-modulatory activities of the essential oils on the activity of aminoglycosides were evaluated to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, \u3bcg/mL) in the presence or absence of exposure to blue LED light. The chemical analysis showed \u3b1-pinene and bicyclogermacrene as major constituents of OEPm, whereas \u3b1-muurolol was the main compound of OEEb. Both OEEb and OEPm showed MIC 65 512 \u3bcg/mL against the strains under study. However, the association of these oils with the blue LED light enhanced the action of the aminoglycosides amikacin and gentamicin. In conclusion, the association of aminoglycosides with the blue LED light and essential oils was effective against resistant bacteria
Supersymmetric Regularization, Two-Loop QCD Amplitudes and Coupling Shifts
We present a definition of the four-dimensional helicity (FDH) regularization
scheme valid for two or more loops. This scheme was previously defined and
utilized at one loop. It amounts to a variation on the standard 't
Hooft-Veltman scheme and is designed to be compatible with the use of helicity
states for "observed" particles. It is similar to dimensional reduction in that
it maintains an equal number of bosonic and fermionic states, as required for
preserving supersymmetry. Supersymmetry Ward identities relate different
helicity amplitudes in supersymmetric theories. As a check that the FDH scheme
preserves supersymmetry, at least through two loops, we explicitly verify a
number of these identities for gluon-gluon scattering (gg to gg) in
supersymmetric QCD. These results also cross-check recent non-trivial two-loop
calculations in ordinary QCD. Finally, we compute the two-loop shift between
the FDH coupling and the standard MS-bar coupling, alpha_s. The FDH shift is
identical to the one for dimensional reduction. The two-loop coupling shifts
are then used to obtain the three-loop QCD beta function in the FDH and
dimensional reduction schemes.Comment: 44 pages, minor corrections and clarifications include
Multimessenger astronomy with the Einstein Telescope
Gravitational waves (GWs) are expected to play a crucial role in the
development of multimessenger astrophysics. The combination of GW observations
with other astrophysical triggers, such as from gamma-ray and X-ray satellites,
optical/radio telescopes, and neutrino detectors allows us to decipher science
that would otherwise be inaccessible. In this paper, we provide a broad review
from the multimessenger perspective of the science reach offered by the third
generation interferometric GW detectors and by the Einstein Telescope (ET) in
particular. We focus on cosmic transients, and base our estimates on the
results obtained by ET's predecessors GEO, LIGO, and Virgo.Comment: 26 pages. 3 figures. Special issue of GRG on the Einstein Telescope.
