    Simple planar Bragg grating devices for photonic Hilbert transform

    Hilbert transformers are important devices widely used in information processing and signal analysis in the electronic domain. For example, for spectral efficiency improvement, it is used to construct the analytic signal for single sideband (SSB) modulation from a real signal. Photonic Hilbert transformers (PHTs) are proposed for a similar range of applications and would allow the direct processing of optical signals at bandwidths far beyond current electronic technologies

    Realisation of photonic Hilbert transformer with a simple planar Bragg grating

    Photonic Hilbert transformers (PHTs) are desirable for the direct processing of optical signals at high speeds and operation bandwidths, allowing optical networks to outperform current electronic technologies. We practically demonstrate a photonic Hilbert transformer in planar geometry; utilising a pi-phase shift planar Bragg grating with proper apodization profile. The device is fabricated by direct UV grating writing technology in silica-on-silicon [1]. The PHT has a pi-phase shift at the zero point of the frequency response, whereas the amplitude remains constant. The pi-phase shift in PHT is simply induced by placing a pi-phase shift in the refractive index modulation. The constant amplitude is achieved by precise apodization of the grating coupling strength, while the apodization profile is given by [2]. With our current direct UV writing technology, the proposed grating can be fabricated in a much higher accuracy then the conventional fibre Bragg grating manufacturing technique. We will present our latest work on more complex apodized gratings to obtain the ideal realisable frequency and temporal responses for PHTs

    Direct optical observation of walls and disclination effects in active photonic devices

    Liquid crystal tunable Bragg Gratings defined in planar substrates via a laser patterning technique exhibit complex wavelength tuning. This tuning displays threshold points and hysteresis. These tuning features are shown to be a manifestation of physical processes occurring in the confined geometry of our tunable devices. Such physical processes include the formation and removal of line disclinations and an associated wall. We discuss the effect of walls in the liquid crystal with regards to voltage tuning characteristics and whether they may allow faster wavelength tuning

    All-optical signal processing using planar Bragg gratings

    The fabrication techniques of Bragg gratings broadly fall into two categories: that are holographic, and that are non-interferometric, based on the periodical UV radiation along the photosensitive medium. The fabrication technique in this work is the direct UV grating writing (DGW). This method involves focusing two crossed laser beams (lambda=244nm) into a photosensitive core layer. Precise translation of the sample and modulation of the interference pattern define the channel waveguide and simultaneously create grating structures, shown in Figure 1. First developed at Optoelectronics Research Centre in 2002, it has similarities to the UV writing techniques used for fiber Bragg grating inscription. Advanced grating properties such as chirp, phase shifts, and apodisation are introduced by adjusting the laser intensity and the translating speed

    A cohort study of post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome and PCV2 in 178 pigs from birth to 14 weeks on a single farm in England

    Our hypothesis was that pigs that develop post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) are detectable from an early age with signs of weight loss and other clinical and serological abnormalities. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the temporally varying and fixed events linked with the clinical incidence of PMWS by comparing affected and unaffected pigs in a cohort of 178 male piglets. Piglets were enrolled at birth and examined each week. Samples of blood were collected at regular intervals. The exposures measured were porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) antibody titres in all 178 and PCV2 antigen in a subset of 75 piglets. We also observed piglet health and measured their weight, and a post-mortem examination was performed by an external laboratory on all pigs between 6 and 14 weeks of age that died. From the cohort, 14 (8%) pigs died from PMWS and 4% from other causes. A further 37 pigs between 6 and 14 weeks of age died from PMWS (30) and ileitis and other causes (7). PMWS was only apparent in pigs from 1 to 2 weeks before death when they wasted rapidly. There were no other characteristic clinical signs and no obvious gross clinical lesions post-mortem. There was no strong link with PCV2 antibody throughout life but PCV2 antigen level was higher from 4 to 6 weeks of age in pigs that died from PMWS compared with pigs that died from other causes

    Spin-polaron model: transport properties of EuB6_6

    To understand anomalous transport properties of EuB6_6, we have studied the spin-polaron Hamiltonian incorporating the electron-phonon interaction. Assuming a strong exchange interaction between the carriers and the localized spins, the electrical conductivity is calculated. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the resistivity of EuB6_6 are well explained. At low temperature, magnons dominate the conduction process, whereas the lattice contribution becomes significant at very high temperature due to the scattering with the phonons. Large negative magnetoresistance near the ferromagnetic transition is also reproduced as observed in EuB6_6.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.

    Fluctuation induced hopping and spin polaron transport

    We study the motion of free magnetic polarons in a paramagnetic background of fluctuating local moments. The polaron can tunnel only to nearby regions of local moments when these fluctuate into alignment. We propose this fluctuation induced hopping as a new transport mechanism for the spin polaron. We calculate the diffusion constant for fluctuation induced hopping from the rate at which local moments fluctuate into alignment. The electrical resistivity is then obtained via the Einstein relation. We suggest that the proposed transport mechanism is relevant in the high temperature phase of the Mn pyrochlore colossal magneto resistance compounds and Europium hexaboride.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    On the derivative of the associated Legendre function of the first kind of integer order with respect to its degree

    In our recent works [R. Szmytkowski, J. Phys. A 39 (2006) 15147; corrigendum: 40 (2007) 7819; addendum: 40 (2007) 14887], we have investigated the derivative of the Legendre function of the first kind, Pν(z)P_{\nu}(z), with respect to its degree ν\nu. In the present work, we extend these studies and construct several representations of the derivative of the associated Legendre function of the first kind, Pν±m(z)P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z), with respect to the degree ν\nu, for mNm\in\mathbb{N}. At first, we establish several contour-integral representations of Pν±m(z)/ν\partial P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z)/\partial\nu. They are then used to derive Rodrigues-type formulas for [Pν±m(z)/ν]ν=n[\partial P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n} with nNn\in\mathbb{N}. Next, some closed-form expressions for [Pν±m(z)/ν]ν=n[\partial P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n} are obtained. These results are applied to find several representations, both explicit and of the Rodrigues type, for the associated Legendre function of the second kind of integer degree and order, Qn±m(z)Q_{n}^{\pm m}(z); the explicit representations are suitable for use for numerical purposes in various regions of the complex zz-plane. Finally, the derivatives [2Pνm(z)/ν2]ν=n[\partial^{2}P_{\nu}^{m}(z)/\partial\nu^{2}]_{\nu=n}, [Qνm(z)/ν]ν=n[\partial Q_{\nu}^{m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n} and [Qνm(z)/ν]ν=n1[\partial Q_{\nu}^{m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=-n-1}, all with m>nm>n, are evaluated in terms of [Pνm(±z)/ν]ν=n[\partial P_{\nu}^{-m}(\pm z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n}.Comment: LateX, 40 pages, 1 figure, extensive referencin

    Shadowing in Inelastic Scattering of Muons on Carbon, Calcium and Lead at Low XBj

    Nuclear shadowing is observed in the per-nucleon cross-sections of positive muons on carbon, calcium and lead as compared to deuterium. The data were taken by Fermilab experiment E665 using inelastically scattered muons of mean incident momentum 470 GeV/c. Cross-section ratios are presented in the kinematic region 0.0001 < XBj <0.56 and 0.1 < Q**2 < 80 GeVc. The data are consistent with no significant nu or Q**2 dependence at fixed XBj. As XBj decreases, the size of the shadowing effect, as well as its A dependence, are found to approach the corresponding measurements in photoproduction.Comment: 22 pages, incl. 6 figures, to be published in Z.     Field Measurements of Terrestrial and Martian Dust Devils

    Surface-based measurements of terrestrial and martian dust devils/convective vortices provided from mobile and stationary platforms are discussed. Imaging of terrestrial dust devils has quantified their rotational and vertical wind speeds, translation speeds, dimensions, dust load, and frequency of occurrence. Imaging of martian dust devils has provided translation speeds and constraints on dimensions, but only limited constraints on vertical motion within a vortex. The longer mission durations on Mars afforded by long operating robotic landers and rovers have provided statistical quantification of vortex occurrence (time-of-sol, and recently seasonal) that has until recently not been a primary outcome of more temporally limited terrestrial dust devil measurement campaigns. Terrestrial measurement campaigns have included a more extensive range of measured vortex parameters (pressure, wind, morphology, etc.) than have martian opportunities, with electric field and direct measure of dust abundance not yet obtained on Mars. No martian robotic mission has yet provided contemporaneous high frequency wind and pressure measurements. Comparison of measured terrestrial and martian dust devil characteristics suggests that martian dust devils are larger and possess faster maximum rotational wind speeds, that the absolute magnitude of the pressure deficit within a terrestrial dust devil is an order of magnitude greater than a martian dust devil, and that the time-of-day variation in vortex frequency is similar. Recent terrestrial investigations have demonstrated the presence of diagnostic dust devil signals within seismic and infrasound measurements; an upcoming Mars robotic mission will obtain similar measurement types
