Teaching and learning analogue electronics in undergraduate courses : preliminary findings from the ETL project
This paper describes ongoing research into the teaching and learning of analogue electronics in three course units at two research-intensive universities. It draws on students' experiences of teaching and learning in analogue course units to explore the nature of the learning they were undertaking and examines the teaching-learning activities they found most supportive of their studying
Bioaccessibility performance data for fifty-seven elements in guidance material BGS 102
BGS 102, a guidance material for bioaccessible arsenic (As) and lead (Pb), was produced during validation of the in vitro Unified Bioaccessibility Method (UBM). This paper reports a compilation of reproducible bioaccessible guidance values for fifty-five additional elements in BGS 102, providing guidance for analysts to broaden the scope of UBM analyses for a wider range of elements based on data collected over an average of 60 separate analytical batches per element. Data are presented in categories for both gastric (STOM) and gastrointestinal (STOM + INT) extraction phases, where reproducibility, measured as relative standard deviation (RSD) was; ≤ 10% RSD for 27 elements (Mg, Al, Si, P, Ca, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb); between 10 and 20% RSD for 10 elements (Li, K, V, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Lu, Pb, U); and ≥ 20% RSD for 19 elements in the gastric phase (Be, B, S, Ti, Ga, Se, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ag, Sn, Sb, Cs, Hf, Ta, W, Tl, Bi, Th). Two elements (Mg, Rb) met the ≤ 10% RSD criteria in the UBM gastrointestinal extraction phase due to the alkaline conditions of this phase precipitating out the majority of determinands. Certain elements, including Na, K, Zn and Se, were found to be a significant component of the extraction fluids with proportionally higher concentrations compared to the guidance material. Bioaccessible fractions (%BAF) were also calculated, but were found to be a less reproducible format for confirming the accuracy of measurements. The low concentration of some elements of interest in BGS 102, such as antimony (Sb), justifies the preparation of an alternative certified reference material (CRM). This paper presents an opportunity to broaden the scope of the UBM method to address food security issues (e.g. Fe and Zn micronutrient deficiencies) and contributions to dietary intake from extraneous dust or soil through evidence of the analytical possibilities and current limitations requiring further investigation
Late Glacial to Holocene relative sea level change in Assynt, northwest Scotland, UK
Relative sea-level change (RSL), from the Late Glacial through to the late Holocene, is reconstructed for the Assynt region, northwest Scotland, based on bio- and lithostratigraphical analysis. Four new radiocarbon-dated sea-level index points help constrain RSL change for the Late Glacial to late Holocene. These new data, in addition to published material, capture the RSL fall during the Late Glacial and the rise and fall associated with the mid-Holocene highstand. Two of these index points constrain the Late Glacial RSL history in Assynt for the first time, reconstructing RSL falling from 2.47 ± 0.59 m OD to 0.15 ± 0.59 m OD at c. 14000 - 15000 cal yr BP. These new data test model predictions of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), particularly during the early deglacial period which is currently poorly constrained throughout the British Isles. While the empirical data from the mid- to late-Holocene to present matches quite well with recent GIA model output, there is a relatively poor fit between the timing of the Late Glacial RSL fall and early Holocene RSL rise. This mismatch, also evident elsewhere in northwest Scotland, may result from uncertainties associated with both the global and local ice components of GIA models
Fundamental representations and algebraic properties of biquaternions or complexified quaternions
The fundamental properties of biquaternions (complexified quaternions) are
presented including several different representations, some of them new, and
definitions of fundamental operations such as the scalar and vector parts,
conjugates, semi-norms, polar forms, and inner and outer products. The notation
is consistent throughout, even between representations, providing a clear
account of the many ways in which the component parts of a biquaternion may be
manipulated algebraically
Analytical solution of a generalized Penna model
In 1995 T.J.Penna introduced a simple model of biological aging. A modified
Penna model has been demonstrated to exhibit behaviour of real-life systems
including catastrophic senescence in salmon and a mortality plateau at advanced
ages. We present a general steady-state, analytic solution to the Penna model,
able to deal with arbitrary birth and survivability functions. This solution is
employed to solve standard variant Penna models studied by simulation.

Growth factor in f(T) gravity
We derive the evolution equation of growth factor for the matter over-dense
perturbation in gravity. For instance, we investigate its behavior in
power law model at small redshift and compare it to the prediction of
CDM and dark energy with the same equation of state in the framework
of Einstein general relativity. We find that the perturbation in gravity
grows slower than that in Einstein general relativity if \p f/\p T>0 due to

Giants and loops in beta-deformed theories
We study extended objects in the gravity dual of the N=1 beta-deformation of
N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. We identify probe brane configurations
corresponding to giant gravitons and Wilson loops. In particular we identify a
new class of objects, given by D5-branes wrapped on a two-torus with a
world-volume gauge field strength turned on along the torus. These appear when
the deformation parameter assumes a rational value and the gauge theory
spectrum has additional branches of vacua. We give an interpretation of the new
D5-brane dual giant gravitons in terms of rotating vacuum expectation values in

The perseverance of Pacioli's goods inventory accounting system
This paper details sources of the 'undoubtedly strange' (Yamey, 1994a, p.119) system of goods inventory records described in Pacioli’s 1494 bookkeeping treatise and traces the longevity and widespread use of this early perpetual inventory recording (EPIR) system in English language texts. By doing so and contrasting this system with the bookkeeping treatment of modern texts, it is shown that the EPIR system persisted as the dominant form of goods inventory accounting for between 400 and 500 years and that the reasons for its demise are worthy of further consideration and research

HOx observations over West Africa during AMMA: impact of isoprene and NOx
Aircraft OH and HO2 measurements made over West Africa during the AMMA field campaign in summer 2006 have been investigated using a box model constrained to observations of long-lived species and physical parameters. "Good" agreement was found for HO2 (modelled to observed gradient of 1.23 ± 0.11). However, the model significantly overpredicts OH concentrations. The reasons for this are not clear, but may reflect instrumental instabilities affecting the OH measurements. Within the model, HOx concentrations in West Africa are controlled by relatively simple photochemistry, with production dominated by ozone photolysis and reaction of O(1D) with water vapour, and loss processes dominated by HO2 + HO2 and HO2 + RO2. Isoprene chemistry was found to influence forested regions. In contrast to several recent field studies in very low NOx and high isoprene environments, we do not observe any dependence of model success for HO2 on isoprene and attribute this to efficient recycling of HOx through RO2 + NO reactions under the moderate NOx concentrations (5–300 ppt NO in the boundary layer, median 76 ppt) encountered during AMMA. This suggests that some of the problems with understanding the impact of isoprene on atmospheric composition may be limited to the extreme low range of NOx concentrations
