Marx’s Critique of Enlightenment Humanism
The article explores Marx's critique of Enlightenment humanism, aimed at establishing real humanism synonymous with real materialism. Marx's ecological critique of capitalist society was thus crucial as it was focused on the reconciliation of humanity and nature. Marx's analysis emphasized the need for revolutionary praxis, rooted in a new human ecology and the creation of a world beyond capital. The article shows that modern posthumanism largely unconsciously reproduces Marx's radical criticism of such basic ideas of Enlightenment humanism as anthropocentrism, the ontological division between human and nonhuman animals, the opposition of society and nature, and Prometheanism. However, Marx himself is accused by posthumanists of these Enlightenment "sins" that have led to a global environmental crisis.At the same time, posthumanists declare, within the framework of their flat ontology, total equality, and solidarity between everything that exists - from microbes to clouds. According to them, only such a "democratic ontology" is able to prevent a global ecological crisis. But from the author's point of view, the flat ontology, cyborgism and new materialism actually turn into an insane production of phantoms, which leads to a dead end, because in this "phantasmagoria" all connection with the real world is cut off. And only a turn from posthumanism to reality can save the planet from ecological rifts, disruptions, and crises generated by capitalism. This can be achieved by referring to Marx's philosophy of praxis and his ecological concept ofsocial metabolism
Finding largest small polygons with GloptiPoly
A small polygon is a convex polygon of unit diameter. We are interested in
small polygons which have the largest area for a given number of vertices .
Many instances are already solved in the literature, namely for all odd ,
and for and 8. Thus, for even , instances of this problem
remain open. Finding those largest small polygons can be formulated as
nonconvex quadratic programming problems which can challenge state-of-the-art
global optimization algorithms. We show that a recently developed technique for
global polynomial optimization, based on a semidefinite programming approach to
the generalized problem of moments and implemented in the public-domain Matlab
package GloptiPoly, can successfully find largest small polygons for and
. Therefore this significantly improves existing results in the domain.
When coupled with accurate convex conic solvers, GloptiPoly can provide
numerical guarantees of global optimality, as well as rigorous guarantees
relying on interval arithmetic
Resonant forcing of select degrees of freedom of multidimensional chaotic map dynamics
We study resonances of multidimensional chaotic map dynamics. We use the
calculus of variations to determine the additive forcing function that induces
the largest response, that is, the greatest deviation from the unperturbed
dynamics. We include the additional constraint that only select degrees of
freedom be forced, corresponding to a very general class of problems in which
not all of the degrees of freedom in an experimental system are accessible to
forcing. We find that certain Lagrange multipliers take on a fundamental
physical role as the efficiency of the forcing function and the effective
forcing experienced by the degrees of freedom which are not forced directly.
Furthermore, we find that the product of the displacement of nearby
trajectories and the effective total forcing function is a conserved quantity.
We demonstrate the efficacy of this methodology with several examples.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

V.I. Vernadsky and the noosphere concept: Russian understandings of society-nature interaction
Recent Russian legislative and policy documentation concerning national progress towards sustainable development has suggested that the attainment of such a state would represent the first stage in the development of the noosphere as outlined by the Russian scientist Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky (1863–1945). This paper explores Vernadsky’s model of evolutionary change through a focus on his work on the biosphere and noosphere in an attempt to further understanding of the way in which Russia is approaching the concept of sustainable development in the contemporary period. It is argued that the official Russian interpretation of the noosphere idea tends to obscure the evolutionary and materialist foundations of Vernadsky’s biosphere–noosphere conceptualisation. At the same time, the concluding section of the paper suggests that the scope of Vernadsky’s work can be used to stimulate the search for a more coherent approach to work in areas of sustainable development and sustainability across the span of the social and physical sciences
Molecular basis for bacterial peptidoglycan recognition by LysM domains.
Carbohydrate recognition is essential for growth, cell adhesion and signalling in all living organisms. A highly conserved carbohydrate binding module, LysM, is found in proteins from viruses, bacteria, fungi, plants and mammals. LysM modules recognize polysaccharides containing N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) residues including peptidoglycan, an essential component of the bacterial cell wall. However, the molecular mechanism underpinning LysM-peptidoglycan interactions remains unclear. Here we describe the molecular basis for peptidoglycan recognition by a multimodular LysM domain from AtlA, an autolysin involved in cell division in the opportunistic bacterial pathogen Enterococcus faecalis. We explore the contribution of individual modules to the binding, identify the peptidoglycan motif recognized, determine the structures of free and bound modules and reveal the residues involved in binding. Our results suggest that peptide stems modulate LysM binding to peptidoglycan. Using these results, we reveal how the LysM module recognizes the GlcNAc-X-GlcNAc motif present in polysaccharides across kingdoms
Towards a synthesized critique of neoliberal biodiversity conservation
During the last three decades, the arena of biodiversity conservation has largely aligned itself with the globally dominant political ideology of neoliberalism and associated governmentalities. Schemes such as payments for ecological services are promoted to reach the multiple ‘wins’ so desired: improved biodiversity conservation, economic development, (international) cooperation and poverty alleviation, amongst others. While critical scholarship with respect to understanding the linkages between neoliberalism, capitalism and the environment has a long tradition, a synthesized critique of neoliberal conservation - the ideology (and related practices) that the salvation of nature requires capitalist expansion - remains lacking. This paper aims to provide such a critique. We commence with the assertion that there has been a conflation between ‘economics’ and neoliberal ideology in conservation thinking and implementation. As a result, we argue, it becomes easier to distinguish the main problems that neoliberal win-win models pose for biodiversity conservation. These are framed around three points: the stimulation of contradictions; appropriation and misrepresentation and the disciplining of dissent. The perseverance of Pacioli's goods inventory accounting system
This paper details sources of the 'undoubtedly strange' (Yamey, 1994a, p.119) system of goods inventory records described in Pacioli’s 1494 bookkeeping treatise and traces the longevity and widespread use of this early perpetual inventory recording (EPIR) system in English language texts. By doing so and contrasting this system with the bookkeeping treatment of modern texts, it is shown that the EPIR system persisted as the dominant form of goods inventory accounting for between 400 and 500 years and that the reasons for its demise are worthy of further consideration and research
