Effective viscosity of dispersions approached by a statistical continuum method
The problem of the determination of the effective viscosity of disperse systems (emulsions, suspensions) is considered. On the basis of the formal solution of the equations governing creeping flow in a statistically homogeneous dispersion, the effective viscosity is expressed in a series expansion in terms of correlation functions. The contribution of the interfacial tension to the effective viscosity is also considered and finally bounds for the effective viscosity are indicated
Parity Game Reductions
Parity games play a central role in model checking and satisfiability
checking. Solving parity games is computationally expensive, among others due
to the size of the games, which, for model checking problems, can easily
contain vertices or beyond. Equivalence relations can be used to reduce
the size of a parity game, thereby potentially alleviating part of the
computational burden. We reconsider (governed) bisimulation and (governed)
stuttering bisimulation, and we give detailed proofs that these relations are
equivalences, have unique quotients and they approximate the winning regions of
parity games. Furthermore, we present game-based characterisations of these
relations. Using these characterisations our equivalences are compared to
relations for parity games that can be found in the literature, such as direct
simulation equivalence and delayed simulation equivalence. To complete the
overview we develop coinductive characterisations of direct- and delayed
simulation equivalence and we establish a lattice of equivalences for parity
games
Snake venom instability
Comparative electrophoretic studies were conducted on the venom of the rinkals (Hemachatus haemachatus). Egyptian cobra Naja haje haje) and puffadder (Bills arietans). Considerable differences in electrophoretic characteristics were found between fresh venom and commercial venom samples from the same species of snake. These differences could be attributed partly to the instability of snake venom under conditions of drying and storage
Bisimulation minimisations for Boolean equation systems
Boolean equation systems (BESs) have been used to encode several complex verification problems, including model checking and equivalence checking. We introduce the concepts of strong bisimulation and oblivious bisimulation for BESs, and we prove that these can be used for minimising BESs prior to solving these. Our results show that large reductions of the BESs may be obtained efficiently. Minimisation is rewarding for BESs with non-trivial alternations: the time required for solving the original BES exceeds the time required for quotienting plus the time for solving the quotient. Furthermore, we provide a verification example that demonstrates that bisimulation minimisation of a process prior to encoding the verification problem on that process as a BES can be arbitrarily less effective than minimising the BES that encodes the verification problem

Minor industrial crops in the Southern Africa region: an appraisal of developmental potential with special reference to interregional trade. (June-July 1995). Vol.1: The main report
This report presents the findings and conclusions arising from a team study carried out in June-August 1995 of the potential for development of 'minor industrial crops' in the Southern Africa region. The study focussed on spices, essential oils, gums, resins, natural colourants and castor oil. Information was gathered on markets and production by means of field studies in South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia and was supplemented by examination of trade statistics and discussions with overseas traders. Time constraints on the study precluded a thorough investigation of all topics and, therefore, the conclusions reached must be regarded as a first phase overview of the regional market and a preliminary identification of the more promising crops for future development
Intra-assessor reliability and measurement error of ultrasound measures for foot muscle morphology in older adults using a tablet-based ultrasound machine
BACKGROUND: To gain insight into the role of plantar intrinsic foot muscles in fall-related gait parameters in older adults, it is fundamental to assess foot muscles separately. Ultrasonography is considered a promising instrument to quantify the strength capacity of individual muscles by assessing their morphology. The main goal of this study was to investigate the intra-assessor reliability and measurement error for ultrasound measures for the morphology of selected foot muscles and the plantar fascia in older adults using a tablet-based device. The secondary aim was to compare the measurement error between older and younger adults and between two different ultrasound machines. METHODS: Ultrasound images of selected foot muscles and the plantar fascia were collected in younger and older adults by a single operator, intensively trained in scanning the foot muscles, on two occasions, 1–8 days apart, using a tablet-based and a mainframe system. The intra-assessor reliability and standard error of measurement for the cross-sectional area and/or thickness were assessed by analysis of variance. The error variance was statistically compared across age groups and machines. RESULTS: Eighteen physically active older adults (mean age 73.8 (SD: 4.9) years) and ten younger adults (mean age 21.9 (SD: 1.8) years) participated in the study. In older adults, the standard error of measurement ranged from 2.8 to 11.9%. The ICC ranged from 0.57 to 0.97, but was excellent in most cases. The error variance for six morphology measures was statistically smaller in younger adults, but was small in older adults as well. When different error variances were observed across machines, overall, the tablet-based device showed superior repeatability. CONCLUSIONS: This intra-assessor reliability study showed that a tablet-based ultrasound machine can be reliably used to assess the morphology of selected foot muscles in older adults, with the exception of plantar fascia thickness. Although the measurement errors were sometimes smaller in younger adults, they seem adequate in older adults to detect group mean hypertrophy as a response to training. A tablet-based ultrasound device seems to be a reliable alternative to a mainframe system. This advocates its use when foot muscle morphology in older adults is of interest.
