The role of the “Inter-Life” virtual world as a creative technology to support student transition into higher education
The shape of Higher Education (HE) in the UK and internationally is changing, with wider access policies leading to greater diversity and heterogeneity in contemporary student populations world-wide. Students in the 21st Century are often described as “fragmented”; meaning they are frequently working whilst participating in a full time Degree programme. Consequently, those in the HE setting are required to become “future ready” which increasingly involves the seamless integration of new digital technologies into undergraduate programmes of teaching and learning. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of the “Inter-Life” three-dimensional virtual world as a suitable Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) tool to support the initial stages of transition from school into university. Our results demonstrate that Inter-Life is “fit for purpose” in terms of the robustness of both the educational and technical design features. We have shown that Inter-Life provides a safe space that supports induction mediated by active learning tasks using learner-generated, multi-modal transition tools. In addition, through the provision of private spaces, Inter-Life also supports and fosters the development of critical reflective thinking skills. However, in keeping with the current literature in the field, some of the students expressed a wish for more training in the functional and social skills required to navigate and experience the Inter-Life virtual world more effectively. Such findings resonate with the current debate in the field which challenges the notion of “digital natives”, but the present study has also provided some new evidence to support the role of virtual worlds for the development of a suitable community to support students undergoing transition to university

The Chagos Islands cases: the empire strikes back
Good governance requires the accommodation of multiple interests in the cause of decision making. However, undue regard for particular sectional interests can take their toll upon public faith in government administration. Historically, broad conceptions of the good of the commonwealth were employed to outweigh the interests of groups that resisted colonisation. In the decision making of the British Empire, the standard approach for justifying the marginalisation of the interests of colonised groups was that they were uncivilised and that particular hardships were the price to be paid for bringing to them the imperial dividend of industrial society. It is widely assumed that with the dismantling of the British Empire, such impulses and their accompanying jurisprudence became a thing of the past. Even as decolonisation proceeded apace after the Second World War, however, the United Kingdom maintained control of strategically important islands with a view towards sustaining its global role. In an infamous example from this twilight period of empire, in the 1960s imperial interests were used to justify the expulsion of the Chagos islanders from the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). Into the twenty-first century, this forced elision of the UK’s interests with the imperial “common good” continues to take centre stage in courtroom battles over the islanders’ rights, being cited before domestic and international tribunals in order to maintain the Chagossians’ exclusion from their homeland. This article considers the new jurisprudence of imperialism which has emerged in a string of decisions which have continued to marginalise the Chagossians’ interests
SOME ABSTRACT PROPERTIES OF SEMIGROUPS APPEARING IN SUPERCONFORMAL THEORIES
A new type of semigroups which appears while dealing with
superconformal symmetry in superstring theories is considered. The ideal series
having unusual abstract properties is constructed. Various idealisers are
introduced and studied. The ideal quasicharacter is defined. Green's relations

The Interannual variability of hurricane activity in the Atlantic and east pacific regions
The investigation of the interannual and interdecadal variations in hurricane activity has been an important topic of study lately, especially with regard to their implications for climate change issues. On the interannual time-scale, the El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phase has been correlated with hurricane activity in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Ocean Basins. For example, various atmospheric and oceanic parameters that influence hurricane development become significantly altered during an El Niño event, leading to suppressed easterly wave development and growth in the Atlantic, but more activity in the Eastern Pacific Ocean Basin. This study examined the interannual variability of hurricane intensity (measured as wind speed and interpreted through the Saffir-Simpson Scale) from 1938 through 2007 in the Atlantic and 1970 through 2007 in the Pacific basins, respectively. These data were then compared with the occurrence of El Niño/La Niña events as defined using the Japan Meteorological Association (JMA) index. El Niño/La Niña variability superimposed on variability associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) was also examined here. Not surprisingly, during an El Niño year the intensity of Atlantic hurricanes was found to be weaker than during a neutral year or a La Niña year, but these conclusions were opposite in the Eastern Pacific Ocean Basin. There were also significant differences found in hurricane intensity between El Niño and La Niña years when the PDO was in phase 1 (warm phase), rather than when the PDO was in phase 2 (cool phase). This study also examined the interannual variation in hurricane intensity by genesis region (i.e. Atlantic: the eastern and western Atlantic Ocean Basins, the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico; Eastern Pacific: divided into quadrants using 20o N and 125o W as the quadrant intersection point). Finally, the utility of this information in a long-range forecast application is demonstrated
Massive stars exploding in a He-rich circumstellar medium. IV. Transitional Type Ibn Supernovae
We present ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared data of the Type Ibn
supernovae (SNe) 2010al and 2011hw. SN 2010al reaches an absolute magnitude at
peak of M(R) = -18.86 +- 0.21. Its early light curve shows similarities with
normal SNe Ib, with a rise to maximum slower than most SNe Ibn. The spectra are
dominated by a blue continuum at early stages, with narrow P-Cygni He I lines
indicating the presence of a slow-moving, He-rich circumstellar medium. At
later epochs the spectra well match those of the prototypical SN Ibn 2006jc,
although the broader lines suggest that a significant amount of He was still
present in the stellar envelope at the time of the explosion. SN 2011hw is
somewhat different. It was discovered after the first maximum, but the light
curve shows a double-peak. The absolute magnitude at discovery is similar to
that of the second peak (M(R) = -18.59 +- 0.25), and slightly fainter than the
average of SNe Ibn. Though the spectra of SN 2011hw are similar to those of SN
2006jc, coronal lines and narrow Balmer lines are cleary detected. This
indicates substantial interaction of the SN ejecta with He-rich, but not
H-free, circumstellar material. The spectra of SN 2011hw suggest that it is a
transitional SN Ibn/IIn event similar to SN 2005la. While for SN 2010al the
spectro-photometric evolution favours a H-deprived Wolf-Rayet progenitor (of
WN-type), we agree with the conclusion of Smith et al. (2012) that the
precursor of SN 2011hw was likely in transition from a luminous blue variable
to an early Wolf-Rayet (Ofpe/WN9) stage.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables. Accepted by MNRA
Summary: Working Group on QCD and Strong Interactions
In this summary of the considerations of the QCD working group at Snowmass
2001, the roles of quantum chromodynamics in the Standard Model and in the
search for new physics are reviewed, with empahsis on frontier areas in the
field. We discuss the importance of, and prospects for, precision QCD in
perturbative and lattice calculations. We describe new ideas in the analysis of
parton distribution functions and jet structure, and review progress in

Radioactive decays at limits of nuclear stability
The last decades brought an impressive progress in synthesizing and studying
properties of nuclides located very far from the beta stability line. Among the
most fundamental properties of such exotic nuclides, usually established first,
is the half-life, possible radioactive decay modes, and their relative
probabilities. When approaching limits of nuclear stability, new decay modes
set in. First, beta decays become accompanied by emission of nucleons from
highly excited states of daughter nuclei. Second, when the nucleon separation
energy becomes negative, nucleons start to be emitted from the ground state.
Here, we present a review of the decay modes occurring close to the limits of
stability. The experimental methods used to produce, identify and detect new
species and their radiation are discussed. The current theoretical
understanding of these decay processes is overviewed. The theoretical
description of the most recently discovered and most complex radioactive
process - the two-proton radioactivity - is discussed in more detail.Comment: Review, 68 pages, 39 figure
