    The Extent and Nature of Autistic People’s Violence Experiences During Adulthood: A Cross-sectional Study of Victimisation

    This study investigated the extent and nature of violence experiences reported by autistic adults. Autistic (n = 118) and non-autistic (n = 110) adults completed a questionnaire about their experiences of sexual harassment, stalking and harassment, sexual violence and physical violence since the age of 15. Autistic adults reported higher rates of all violence types, multiple forms of violence and repeated instances of the same type of violence. Typical gender differences in the patterns of violence (more physical violence reported by men and more sexual violence reported by women) were apparent in the non-autistic but not the autistic group. Findings add to the limited research in this area and highlight the need to identify risk and protective factors. Policy and practice implications are also discussed

    Using the chemical potential of a solid in a dissolved state or the corresponding component of the chemical potential tensor at equilibrium with the solution, a new concept of grand thermodynamic potential for solids has been suggested. This allows generalizing the definition of Gibbs' quantity σ\sigma (surface work often called the solid-fluid interfacial free energy) at a planar surface as an excess grand thermodynamic potential per unit surface area that (1) does not depend on the dividing surface location and (2) is common for fluids and solids.Comment: 6 page

    User interface design for mobile-based sexual health interventions for young people: Design recommendations from a qualitative study on an online Chlamydia clinical care pathway

    Background: The increasing pervasiveness of mobile technologies has given potential to transform healthcare by facilitating clinical management using software applications. These technologies may provide valuable tools in sexual health care and potentially overcome existing practical and cultural barriers to routine testing for sexually transmitted infections. In order to inform the design of a mobile health application for STIs that supports self-testing and self-management by linking diagnosis with online care pathways, we aimed to identify the dimensions and range of preferences for user interface design features among young people. Methods: Nine focus group discussions were conducted (n=49) with two age-stratified samples (16 to 18 and 19 to 24 year olds) of young people from Further Education colleges and Higher Education establishments. Discussions explored young people's views with regard to: the software interface; the presentation of information; and the ordering of interaction steps. Discussions were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Interview transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Four over-arching themes emerged: privacy and security; credibility; user journey support; and the task-technology-context fit. From these themes, 20 user interface design recommendations for mobile health applications are proposed. For participants, although privacy was a major concern, security was not perceived as a major potential barrier as participants were generally unaware of potential security threats and inherently trusted new technology. Customisation also emerged as a key design preference to increase attractiveness and acceptability. Conclusions: Considerable effort should be focused on designing healthcare applications from the patient's perspective to maximise acceptability. The design recommendations proposed in this paper provide a valuable point of reference for the health design community to inform development of mobile-based health interventions for the diagnosis and treatment of a number of other conditions for this target group, while stimulating conversation across multidisciplinary communities

    Light controlled magnetoresistance and magnetic field controlled photoresistance in CoFe film deposited on BiFeO3

    We present a magnetoresistive-photoresistive device based on the interaction of a piezomagnetic CoFe thin film with a photostrictive BiFeO3 substrate that undergoes light-induced strain. The magnitude of the resistance and magnetoresistance in the CoFe film can be controlled by the wavelength of the incident light on the BiFeO3. Moreover, a light-induced decrease in anisotropic magnetoresistance is detected due to an additional magnetoelastic contribution to magnetic anisotropy of the CoFe film. This effect may find applications in photo-sensing systems, wavelength detectors and can possibly open a research development in light-controlled magnetic switching properties for next generation magnetoresistive memory devices.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, journal pape

    Charge Symmetry Violation Effects in Pion Scattering off the Deuteron

    We discuss the theoretical and experimental situations for charge symmetry violation (CSV) effects in the elastic scattering of pi+ and pi- on deuterium (D) and 3He/3H. Accurate comparison of data for both types of targets provides evidence for the presence of CSV effects. While there are indications of a CSV effect in deuterium, it is much more pronounced in the case of 3He/3H. We provide a description of the CSV effect on the deuteron in terms of single- and double- scattering amplitudes. The Delta-mass splitting is taken into account. Theoretical predictions are compared with existing experimental data for pi-d scattering; a future article will speak to the pi-three nucleon case.Comment: 16 pages of RevTeX, 7 postscript figure

    General conditions for the occurrence of mesoscopic phase fluctuations in condensed matter are considered. The description of different thermodynamic phases, which coexist as a mixture of mesoscopically separated regions, is based on the {\it theory of heterophase fluctuations}. The spaces of states, typical of the related phases, are characterized by {\it weighted Hilbert spaces}.     Layer- and bulk roton excitations of 4He in porous media

    We examine the energetics of bulk and layer-roton excitations of 4He in various porous medial such as aerogel, Geltech, or Vycor, in order to find out what conclusions can be drawn from experiments on the energetics about the physisorption mechanism. The energy of the layer-roton minimum depends sensitively on the substrate strength, thus providing a mechanism for a direct measurement of this quantity. On the other hand, bulk-like roton excitations are largely independent of the interaction between the medium and the helium atoms, but the dependence of their energy on the degree of filling reflects the internal structure of the matrix and can reveal features of 4He at negative pressures. While bulk-like rotons are very similar to their true bulk counterparts, the layer modes are not in close relation to two-dimensional rotons and should be regarded as a third, completely independent kind of excitation

    Microbiological profile of salpicão de vinhais and chouriça de vinhais from raw materials to final products: Traditional dry sausages produced in the North of Portugal

    Salpicão de Vinhais and Chouriça de Vinhais are traditional dry-fermented meat sausages produced in the North of Portugal. The microbiological profile during production of both products was followed in three small processing units. Lactic acid bacteria were the most prevalent microorganisms, with enhanced growth during the smoking process and a consequent decrease of pH. This study demonstrated that when highly contaminated raw ingredients are used, pathogens might not be eliminated during processing (from seasoning until the end of smoking). Therefore, it is important to highlight that to produce safe Salpicão and Chouriça following traditional recipes and methodologies it is necessary to work under hygienic conditions using raw materials of good microbiological quality. Industrial relevance: Preservation of pork meat in the form of semi-dry, fermented and smoked products having a long shelf-life, is an age-old artisanal process that is still practiced in many areas of the world. In many rural communities production has a significant impact on the local economy and food supply, but these products are now becoming increasingly popular in urban areas. In a more widespread distribution of such artisanal products, it is important that consumers are not exposed to undue risks of food-borne infections or intoxications.
