Acoustics of tachyon Fermi gas
We consider a Fermi gas of free tachyons as a continuous medium and find
whether it satisfies the causality condition. There is no stable tachyon matter
with the particle density below critical value and the Fermi momentum
that depends on the tachyon mass . The pressure
and energy density cannot be arbitrary small, but the situation is
not forbidden. Existence of shock waves in tachyon gas is also discussed. At
low density the tachyon matter remains stable but no shock wave

Portal vein thrombosis and arterioportal shunts : effects on tumor response after chemoembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma
AIM: To evaluate the effect of portal vein thrombosis and arterioportal shunts on local tumor response in advanced cases of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma treated by transarterial chemoembolization.
METHODS: A retrospective study included 39 patients (mean age: 66.4 years, range: 45-79 years, SD: 7) with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who were treated with repetitive transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in the period between March 2006 and October 2009. The effect of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) (in 19 out of 39 patients), the presence of arterioportal shunt (APS) (in 7 out of 39), the underlying liver pathology, Child-Pugh score, initial tumor volume, number of tumors and tumor margin definition on imaging were correlated with the local tumor response after TACE. The initial and end therapy local tumor responses were evaluated according to the response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (RECIST) and magnetic resonance imaging volumetric measurements.
RESULTS: The treatment protocols were well tolerated by all patients with no major complications. Local tumor response for all patients according to RECIST criteria were partial response in one patient (2.6%), stable disease in 34 patients (87.1%), and progressive disease in 4 patients (10.2%). The MR volumetric measurements showed that the PVT, APS, underlying liver pathology and tumor margin definition were statistically significant prognostic factors for the local tumor response (P = 0.018, P = 0.008, P = 0.034 and P = 0.001, respectively). The overall 6-, 12- and 18-mo survival rates from the initial TACE were 79.5%, 37.5% and 21%, respectively.
CONCLUSION: TACE may be exploited safely for palliative tumor control in patients with advanced unresectable HCC; however, tumor response is significantly affected by the presence or absence of PVT and APS
Exotic magnetism in the alkali sesquoxides Rb4O6 and Cs4O6
Among the various alkali oxides the sesquioxides Rb4O6 and Cs4O6 are of
special interest. Electronic structure calculations using the local
spin-density approximation predicted that Rb4O6 should be a half-metallic
ferromagnet, which was later contradicted when an experimental investigation of
the temperature dependent magnetization of Rb4O6 showed a low-temperature
magnetic transition and differences between zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and
field-cooled (FC) measurements. Such behavior is known from spin glasses and
frustrated systems. Rb4O6 and Cs4O6 comprise two different types of dioxygen
anions, the hyperoxide and the peroxide anions. The nonmagnetic peroxide anions
do not contain unpaired electrons while the hyperoxide anions contain unpaired
electrons in antibonding pi*-orbitals. High electron localization (narrow
bands) suggests that electronic correlations are of major importance in these
open shell p-electron systems. Correlations and charge ordering due to the
mixed valency render p-electron-based anionogenic magnetic order possible in
the sesquioxides. In this work we present an experimental comparison of Rb4O6
and the related Cs4O6. The crystal structures are verified using powder x-ray
diffraction. The mixed valency of both compounds is confirmed using Raman
spectroscopy, and time-dependent magnetization experiments indicate that both
compounds show magnetic frustration, a feature only previously known from d-
and f-electron systems
ADAPTATION OF QGIS TOOLS IN HIGH SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION
In the last decades, geography teachers have been trying to figure out how to adopt GIS (Geographic Information Systems) tools for their high school classes. Predominantly, teachers have come to use commercial versions. Lately, it has been QGIS getting more attention, especially in environments where teachers do not have access to sufficient funding. Nevertheless, there is a lack of ample research results and available teaching materials for geography teachers that want to give QGIS in their lessons a go. This paper presents our attempt to bridge this gap. We have set several goals in our search for the possibilities of adopting QGIS tools for high school geography lessons. The main one was to learn about the strategies that students have when they are learning about QGIS. Furthermore, we wanted to know what knowledge the students would demonstrate after attending a short course on QGIS basics and if their learning strategies during the lectures would impact their results. To find out, we created a set of 10 lessons and tested most of them on students from a high school in Brno, Czech Republic. The results of two pilot studies show that our research has not ended and that further investigation needs to be made about the circumstances that can affect a successful adaptation of QGIS tools in high school geography education
Leiomyoma of the tunica albuginea, a case report of a rare tumour of the testis and review of the literature
BACKGROUND: Leiomyomas are benign tumours that originate from smooth muscles. They are often seen in the uterus, but also in the renal pelvis, bladder, spermatic cord, epididymis, prostate, scrotum or the glans penis. Leiomyomas of the tunica albuginea are extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old white male has noted an asymptomatic tumour on the right side of his scrotal sac for several years. This tumour has increased slowly and caused local scrotal pain. An inguinal incision was performed, in which the hypoplastic testis, the epididymis and the tumour could be easily mobilized. Macroscopically the tumour showed a solid round nonencapsulated whorling cut surface. Histologically the diagnosis of a leiomyoma was made. CONCLUSION: We report here a very interesting and rare case of a leiomyoma of the tunica albuginea. Leiomyomas can be a possible differential diagnosis in this area. Interpreting regional and local diversities of the social acceptance of agricultural AD plants in the rural space of the Moravian-Silesian Region (Czech Republic)
Agricultural anaerobic digestion plants have recently become a typical part of rural landscape in the Czech Republic due to massive governmental subvention programmes. Yet, their potential as an effective tool how to response to global climate changes at a local level is rather underused (maize used as a primary input mainly, usage of waste heat is limited, etc.). This situation is caused by misguided subvention policies. The aim of this contribution is first to analyse the agricultural anaerobic digestion plants in the rural space of the Moravian-Silesian Region, and second, to deepen the knowledge on the perception of the digestion plants among the population of municipalities in which such facility was constructed. A questionnaire survey has been carried out in three model municipalities (n = 369) located in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Several recommendations and notes for public administration and potential investors concerning the location of future anaerobic digestion plants projects and settings of supportive programmes have been defined
MODELING THE ROOT-KNOT NEMATODE/NUTSEDGE PEST COMPLEX: PERSPECTIVES FROM WEED SCIENCE, NEMATOLOGY AND STATISTICS
Previous research by the authors has established that southern root-knot nematode (SRKN, Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid & White) Chitwood) and yellow and purple nutsedge (YNS, Cyperus esculentus L. and PNS, C. rotundus L.) form a pest-complex that adversely affects a wide variety of crops in the southern and western U.S. These pests appear to have co-evolved a mutually-beneficial relationship that promotes the survival of both nematodes and weeds to the detriment of crops. Traditional management has usually targeted one pest at a time, but managing this pest complex requires that all members of the complex be managed simultaneously. A series of experiments was performed to determine if this specific pest complex could be managed through crop-rotation using a non-dormant M. incognita-resistant variety of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) which can aggressively compete with, and hence decrease, occurrence of both species of nutsedges (NS), and subsequently decrease SRKN by decreasing the availability of root systems of host plants. A previous journal article discussed predicting counts of SRKN second-stage juveniles (SRKN-J2) as a function of YNS and PNS plant counts from a two-year alfalfa rotation experiment, using the Poisson distribution and a scale parameter to handle problems of overdispersion. In this paper, we examine three generalizations of the Poisson distribution that allow for the count variance being larger than the mean count: the Generalized Poisson, the Zero-Inflated Poisson (ZIP), and the Poisson Hurdle. The ZIP and Hurdle Poisson distributions both account for zero counts as a separate part of the distribution, while the Generalized Poisson incorporates a separate parameter that increases the variance relative to the mean. Different biological scenarios are presented for which each of these three general Poisson distributions might be logically appropriate. In addition, we use the alfalfa rotation data to present comparisons of fitted regression models of the three general Poisson distributions to the results from the previous analysis using the Poisson. For this data, there was no single probability distribution that worked best for all six sampling dates (three in each of the two years). This is not surprising in that over time the alfalfa rotation was, as planned, decreasing both nutsedge and nematode counts, thus presenting a moving target for the modeling process
Exponential and power law distribution of mass clusters in a (magnetic-like) deposition model of elongated grains in 2D piles
A generalized so called magnetically controlled ballistic rain-like
deposition (MBD) model of granular piles has been numerically investigated in
2D. The grains are taken to be elongated disks whence characterized by a
two-state scalar degree of freedom, called ''nip'', their interaction being
described through a Hamiltonian. Results are discussed in order to search for
the effect of nip flip (or grain rotation from vertical to horizontal and
conversely) probability in building a granular pile. The characteristics of
creation of + (or ) nip's clusters and clusters of holes (missing nips) are
analyzed. Two different cluster-mass regimes have been identified, through the
cluster-mass distribution function which can be exponential or have a power law
form depending on whether the nip flip (or grain rotation) probability is large
or small. Analytical forms of the exponent are empirically found in terms of

Forecasting Electricity Demand by Neural Networks and Definition of Inputs by Multi-Criteria Analysis
The planning of efficient policies based on forecasting electricity demand is essential to guarantee the continuity of energy supply for consumers. Some techniques for forecasting electricity demand have used specific procedures to define input variables, which can be particular to each case study. However, the definition of independent and casual variables is still an issue to be explored. There is a lack of models that could help the selection of independent variables, based on correlate criteria and level of importance integrated with artificial networks, which could directly impact the forecasting quality. This work presents a model that integrates a multi-criteria approach which provides the selection of relevant independent variables and artificial neural networks to forecast the electricity demand in countries. It provides to consider the particularities of each application. To demonstrate the applicability of the model a time series of electricity consumption from a southern region of Brazil was used. The dependent inputs used by the neural networks were selected using a traditional method called Wrapper. As a result of this application, with the multi-criteria ELECTRE I method was possible to recognize temperature and average evaporation as explanatory variables. When the variables selected by the multi-criteria approach were included in the predictive models, were observed more consistent results together with artificial neural networks, better than the traditional linear models. The Radial Basis Function Networks and Extreme Learning Machines stood out as potential techniques to be used integrated with a multi-criteria method to better perform the forecasting
