    Synthesis and Thermal Stability of Cubic ZnO in the Salt Nanocomposites

    Cubic zinc oxide (rs-ZnO), metastable under normal conditions, was synthesized from the wurtzite modification (w-ZnO) at 7.7 GPa and ~800 K in the form of nanoparticles isolated in the NaCl matrix. The phase transition rs-ZnO \rightarrow w-ZnO in nanocrystalline zinc oxide under ambient pressure was experimentally studied for the first time by differential scanning calorimetry and high-temperature X-ray diffraction. It was shown that the transition occurs in the 370-430 K temperature range and its enthalpy at 400 K is -10.2 \pm 0.5 kJ mol-1.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Stress Induced Acral Lick Dermatitis in a Domestic Rabbit: A Case Report

    This case report describes acral lick dermatitis in a six-month-old domestic rabbit, which presented with the complaint of excessive licking of the carpus of left forelimb. Clinical examination showed a single well demarcated, oval, alopecic, ulcerated lesion with peripheral hyperpigmentation and thickening at the carpus of left forelimb. Rabbit was successfully managed with oral fluoxetine and topical application of ointment containing fluocinolone acetonide in 0.025% concentration along with intralesional injection of hydrocortisone of 0.15 mL diluted in normal saline at two sites of a lesion at interval of one week. In addition to medical therapy, hard plastic cat ball, some baby toys, and gnawing sticks were kept with rabbit as a method of environmental enrichment with the purpose of mental stimulation

    A correlative study of serum zinc and in vivo cell mediated immune status in rheumatic heart disease

    This study was conducted to determine the zinc status and assess relationship between serum zinc and in vivo cell mediated immunity (CMI) in patients with rheumatic heart disease (RHD). The study comprised 22 patients with active rheumatic heart disease (ARHD), 15 patients with chronic rheumatic heart disease without activity (CRHD) (selection based on Jone's Criteria--Revised), and 15 age and sex matched healthy control. Zinc estimation was done by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. To assess CMI in vivo, phytohaemagglutinin skin test and skin window test were done. Serum zinc and in vivo CMI in patients with ARHD and CRHD compared with controls. Mean serum zinc was significantly decreased in patients with ARHD and CRHD, more pronounced in the former (P less than 0.001); and mean 24 h urinary zinc was significantly increased in patients with ARHD (P less than 0.001) as compared to controls. A significant depression in CMI in vivo was observed in patients with ARHD and CRHD (P less than 0.001). A significant positive correlation was seen among serum zinc and markers of in vivo CMI (P less than 0.001). In conclusion, depletion of zinc, observed in RHD, probably causes immune alterations and suggest role of zinc in immunopathogenesis of RHD.     Salting-out assisted liquid–liquid extraction for the determination of ciprofloxacin residues in water samples by high performance liquid chromatography–diode array detector

    Abstract Background The occurrence of emerging pollutants like pharmaceuticals and related compounds in the aquatic and terrestrial environments is of increasing concern. Ciprofloxacin is one of the pharmaceuticals which is active against a wide range of bacteria. The main objective of this research is to develop a simple method for the extraction and determination of ciprofloxacin residues in environmental water samples. Results A salting-out assisted liquid–liquid extraction (SALLE) method for the determination of ciprofloxacin in water samples by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC–DAD) was developed. The calibration curve was linear over the range of 0.1–100 μg/L with coefficient of determination (r2) of 0.9976. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of the method were 0.075 and 0.25 µg/L, respectively. The reproducibility in terms of relative standard deviation (% RSD) was less than 10%. The applicability of the developed method was investigated by analyzing tap water, bottled mineral water and waste water and demonstrated satisfactory recoveries in the ranges of 86.4–120%. Conclusion The method offered a number of features including wide linear range, good recovery, short analysis time, simple operation process and environmental friendly. The developed method can be utilized as an attractive alternative for the determination of ciprofloxacin residues in environmental water matrices
