    Development of a prototype model for fully automated Sarawak layered cake machine

    Layered cake also known as kek lapis is very synonym to Sarawak and very famous souvenir to tourist who travels to Sarawak. The exclusive savour and colourful layered design attribute has secure its constant demand all the year especially during festive seasons. The products are not only catered for Sarawak but also exported to Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. The industry contributes almost RM 3 million a year to the entrepreneurs. However, the tedious traditional process is unable to cope with the demand. Manual process is highly dependent on labours and the labours skills has direct influence on the quality of cakes produced. The development follows systematic engineering design process. Concept of sectional base mechanism has been chosen for the machine. The automatic machine has includes all basic processes namely filling of mixture to the baking tray, baking, layered, pressing and cooling. The proposed model is expected to produce 216 moulds per day, which is 430% improvement from the current production rate (50 moulds). Estimated manufacturing cost is about RM 37,000 only.     A Review of Electrically-Assisted Manufacturing With Emphasis on Modeling and Understanding of the Electroplastic Effect

    Increasingly strict fuel efficiency standards have driven the aerospace and automotive industries to improve the fuel economy of their fleets. A key method for feasibly improving the fuel economy is by decreasing the weight, which requires the introduction of materials with high strength to weight ratios into airplane and vehicle designs. Many of these materials are not as formable or machinable as conventional low carbon steels, making production difficult when using traditional forming and machining strategies and capital. Electrical augmentation offers a potential solution to this dilemma through enhancing process capabilities and allowing for continued use of existing equipment. The use of electricity to aid in deformation of metallic materials is termed as electrically assisted manufacturing (EAM). The direct effect of electricity on the deformation of metallic materials is termed as electroplastic effect. This paper presents a summary of the current state-of-the-art in using electric current to augment existing manufacturing processes for processing of higher-strength materials. Advantages of this process include flow stress and forming force reduction, increased formability, decreased elastic recovery, fracture mode transformation from brittle to ductile, decreased overall process energy, and decreased cutting forces in machining. There is currently a lack of agreement as to the underlying mechanisms of the electroplastic effect. Therefore, this paper presents the four main existing theories and the experimental understanding of these theories, along with modeling approaches for understanding and predicting the electroplastic effect

    Serum Levels of CK18 M30 and Leptin Are Useful Predictors of Steatohepatitis and Fibrosis in Paediatric NAFLD

    Background: With the alarming growth in prevalence of paediatric nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), there is a need for noninvasive methods of stratifying disease severity. Our aim was to evaluate a combination of serum biomarkers as a measure of disease activity in paediatric NAFLD. Patients and Methods: Forty-five children with biopsy-proven NAFLD were enrolled. Caspase-cleaved CK18 fragments (CK18 M30), hyaluronic acid, leptin, and adiponectin were measured in serum using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein using a colorimetric assay. Results: Median age was 12.7 years (55% boys). Median body mass index z score was 1.7. CK18 M30 levels were significantly higher in patients with NAFLD versus controls, median 288 IU/L versus 172 IU/L (P = F2) could be differentiated from no/minimal fibrosis (= F2; 28.9 ng/mL versus 70.1 ng/mL (P = 0.037). Adiponectin, hyaluronic acid, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein did not achieve significance in predicting steatohepatitis nor significant fibrosis. Conclusions: The present study combines use of markers for different processes in the development of steatohepatitis. Serum biomarkers, especially CK18 M30, are useful in stratifying disease severity in paediatric NAFLD

    Permissivity of primary hepatocytes and hepatoma cell lines to support hepatitis C virus infection

    The major cell type supporting hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the hepatocyte; however, most reports studying viral entry and replication utilize transformed hepatoma cell lines. We demonstrate that HCV pseudoparticles (HCVpp) infect primary hepatocytes with comparable rates to hepatoma cells, demonstrating the limited variability in donor hepatocytes to support HCV receptor-glycoprotein-dependent entry. In contrast, we observed a 2-log range in viral replication between the same donor hepatocytes. We noted that cell proliferation augments pseudoparticle reporter activity and arresting hepatoma cells yields comparable levels of infection to hepatocytes. This study demonstrates comparable rates of HCVpp entry into primary hepatocytes and hepatoma cells, validating the use of transformed cells as a model system to study HCV entry
