The Holographic Interpretation of Hawking Radiation

Holography gives us a tool to view the Hawking effect from a new, classical perspective. In the context of Randall-Sundrum braneworld models, we show that the basic features of four-dimensional evaporating solutions are nicely translated into classical five-dimensional language. This includes the dual bulk description of particles tunneling through the horizon.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, Honorable Mention in the Gravity Research Foundation Essay Competition 200

Ion channel-like activity of the antimicrobial peptide tritrpticin in planar lipid bilayers

The cationic peptide tritrpticin (VRRFPWWWPFLRR, Trp3) has a broad action spectrum, acting against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as some fungi, while also displaying hemolytic activity. We have studied the behavior of Trp3 in planar lipid bilayers (or black lipid membrane-BLM) and were able to demonstrate its ion channel-like activity. Channel-like activity was observed in negatively charged azolectin BLM as a sudden appearance of discrete current fluctuations upon application of a constant voltage across the membrane. Trp3 formed large conductance channels (500-2000 pS) both at positive and negative potentials. in azolectin bilayers, the predominant ion-channel activity was characterized by very regular and discrete current steps (corresponding to openings) of uniform amplitude, which exhibited relatively long residence times (of the order of seconds). Occasionally, multiple conductance steps were observed, indicating the simultaneous presence of more than one open pore. in bilayers of zwitterionic diphytanoylphosphatidyl choline (DPhk) Trp3 also showed ion-channel activity, but in a much less frequent and less prominent way. Studies of ion selectivity indicated that Trp3 forms a cation-selective channel. These results should contribute to the understanding of the molecular interactions and mechanism of action of Trp3 in lipid bilayers and biological membranes. CP-odd static electromagnetic properties of the W gauge boson and the t quark via the anomalous tbW coupling

In the framework of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian, the one-loop induced effects of the anomalous tbWtbW coupling, which includes both left- and right-handed complex components, on the static electromagnetic properties of the WW boson and the tt quark are studied. The attention is focused mainly on the CP-violating electromagnetic properties. It is found that the tbWtbW anomalous coupling can induce both CP-violating moments of the WW boson, namely, its electric dipole (μ~W\tilde{\mu}_W) and magnetic quadrupole (Q~W\tilde{Q}_W) moments. As far as the tt quark is concerned, a potentially large electric dipole moment (dt)(d_t) can arise due to the anomalous tbWtbW coupling. The most recent bounds on the left- and right-handed parameters from BB meson physics lead to the following estimates μ~W 10231022\tilde{\mu}_W ~ 10^{-23}-10^{-22} e-cm and Q~W 10381037\tilde{Q}_W~ 10^{-38}-10^{-37} e-cm2^2, which are 7 and 14 orders of magnitude larger than the standard model (SM) predictions, whereas dtd_t may be as large as 102210^{-22} e-cm, which is about 8 orders of magnitude larger than its SM counterpart.Comment: This paper has been merged with hep-ph/0612171 for publication in Physical Review

Two-dimensional Quantum Black Holes, Branes in BTZ and Holography

We solve semiclassical Einstein equations in two dimensions with a massive source and we find a static, thermodynamically stable, quantum black hole solution in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state. We then study the black hole geometry generated by a boundary mass sitting on a non-zero tension 1-brane embedded in a three-dimensional BTZ black hole. We show that the two geometries coincide and we extract, using holographic relations, information about the CFT living on the 1-brane. Finally, we show that the quantum black hole has the same temperature of the bulk BTZ, as expected from the holographic principle.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, RevTex, ``point particle of mass \mu '' changed with ``massive boundary source'' for better clarity. C. juncea apresentou a maior capacidade de fitorremediar solos contaminados com sulfentrazone.ABSTRACT: Use of leguminous plants for phytoremediation of soil contaminated with sulfentrazone. Residual sulfentrazone may remain in the soil for around two years, being a source of groundwater contamination and preventing the growth of usceptible plants. So, phytoremediation may represent an option for decontaminating areas which were highly affected by applications of this herbicide. This study aimed at evaluating the potential of Crotalaria juncea, Canavalia ensiformis, Cajanus cajan and Cajanus cajan (dwarf) for remediation of soil contaminated with sulfentrazone, using millet (Pennisetum glaucum) as a bioindicator plant. The experiment was installed in a greenhouse and treatments consisted of the four species already mentioned, plus a control, and four sulfentrazone doses (0 g a.i. ha-1, 200 g a.i. ha-1, 400 g a.i. ha-1 and 800 g a.i. ha-1). Plants height, phytotoxicity to sulfentrazone and fresh and dry matter were evaluated. When P. glaucum was grown after C. juncea, the fresh and dry matter, as well as plant height, were higher, while the phytotoxicity symptoms were less evident. C. juncea showed the best results for phytoremediation of soils contaminated with sulfentrazone

Visible-Light-Mediated Amide Synthesis in Deep Eutectic Solvents

In the present study, for the first time environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are used as reaction media to perform an efficient, simple and straightforward photocatalytic amide synthesis at room temperature using thioacids and amines. This method features mild conditions, a broad substrate scope, high yields (≤99%) under ambient conditions with air and moisture tolerance. Moreover, the applied operationally mild reaction conditions tolerate the presence of several different functional group substituents on the amine counterpart. Finally, the developed approach allows the recycling of the reaction medium and catalyst for at least three consecutive cycles without a significant decrease in the reaction yield. This research has been made possible thanks to the financial support received from the University of Alicante (VIGROB-316FI), the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (PID2021-127332NB-I00) and the Valencian Department of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society (APOSTD/2020/235 and AICO/2021/013).
