    Facilitation of trialogic spaces: reflections from Irish and Scottish online lesson studies

    Digital innovations in teacher education have continued to evolve since the Coronavirus pandemic. As such, there has been recognition of the need to further examine the affordances and constraints of digitally mediated learning environments (Brown-Wilsher, 2021; White & Zimmerman, 2021). In response, this paper draws on the concept of trialogue (Hakkarainen, 2009), i.e. technology mediated dialogue, where digital tools are drawn on to make deliberate building and creation of knowledge accessible. Trialogue involves iterative communication and exchange of ideas in order to develop shared objects (Paavola & Hakkarainen, 2014), which can consist of artefacts, for example, lesson plans; and practices, such as pedagogical techniques. The paper focuses on two different Online Lesson Study projects facilitated by the authors, which took place in Scotland and Ireland. Insights gleaned from each project illustrating trialogue in action are shared, in order to illuminate the potential of trialogic space for enabling teachers’ collaborative learning

    Systematic review of smartphone-based passive sensing for health and wellbeing

    OBJECTIVE: To review published empirical literature on the use of smartphone-based passive sensing for health and wellbeing. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review of the English language literature was performed following PRISMA guidelines. Papers indexed in computing, technology, and medical databases were included if they were empirical, focused on health and/or wellbeing, involved the collection of data via smartphones, and described the utilized technology as passive or requiring minimal user interaction. RESULTS: Thirty-five papers were included in the review. Studies were performed around the world, with samples of up to 171 (median n = 15) representing individuals with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, older adults, and the general population. The majority of studies used the Android operating system and an array of smartphone sensors, most frequently capturing accelerometry, location, audio, and usage data. Captured data were usually sent to a remote server for processing but were shared with participants in only 40% of studies. Reported benefits of passive sensing included accurately detecting changes in status, behavior change through feedback, and increased accountability in participants. Studies reported facing technical, methodological, and privacy challenges. DISCUSSION: Studies in the nascent area of smartphone-based passive sensing for health and wellbeing demonstrate promise and invite continued research and investment. Existing studies suffer from weaknesses in research design, lack of feedback and clinical integration, and inadequate attention to privacy issues. Key recommendations relate to developing passive sensing strategies matching the problem at hand, using personalized interventions, and addressing methodological and privacy challenges. CONCLUSION: As evolving passive sensing technology presents new possibilities for health and wellbeing, additional research must address methodological, clinical integration, and privacy issues. Doing so depends on interdisciplinary collaboration between informatics and clinical experts

    Prediction of blanket peat erosion across Great Britain under environmental change

    A recently developed fluvial erosion model for blanket peatlands, PESERA-PEAT, was applied at ten sites across Great Britain to predict the response of blanket peat erosion to environmental change. Climate change to 2099 was derived from seven UKCP09 future projections and the UK Met Office’s historical dataset. Land management scenarios were established based on outputs from earlier published investigations. Modelling results suggested that as climate changes, the response of blanket peat erosion will be spatially very variable across Great Britain. Both relative changes and absolute values of sediment yield were predicted to be higher in southern and eastern areas than in western and northern parts of Great Britain, peaking in the North York Moors of eastern England. Areas with high precipitation and low temperature were predicted to have low relative erosion changes and absolute sediment yield. The model suggested that summer desiccation may become more important for blanket peat erosion under future climate change, and that temperature was more dominant than precipitation in controlling long-term blanket peat erosion change. However, in the North York Moors, precipitation appeared to be more dominant in driving long-term erosion change. Land management measures were shown to provide a means to mitigate against the impacts of climate change on blanket peat erosion

    The Evolution of the Field and Cluster Morphology-Density Relation for Mass-Selected Samples of Galaxies

    The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and photometric/spectroscopic surveys in the GOODS-South field (the Chandra Deep Field-South, CDFS) are used to construct volume-limited, stellar mass-selected samples of galaxies at redshifts 0<z<1. The CDFS sample at 0.6<z<1.0 contains 207 galaxies complete down to M=4x10^10 Msol (for a ``diet'' Salpeter IMF), corresponding to a luminosity limit for red galaxies of M_B=-20.1. The SDSS sample at 0.020<z<0.045 contains 2003 galaxies down to the same mass limit, which corresponds to M_B=-19.3 for red galaxies. Morphologies are determined with an automated method, using the Sersic parameter n and a measure of the residual from the model fits, called ``bumpiness'', to distinguish different morphologies. These classifications are verified with visual classifications. In agreement with previous studies, 65-70% of the galaxies are located on the red sequence, both at z~0.03 and at z~0.8. Similarly, 65-70% of the galaxies have n>2.5. The fraction of E+S0 galaxies is 43+/-3%$ at z~0.03 and 48+/-7% at z~0.8, i.e., it has not changed significantly since z~0.8. When combined with recent results for cluster galaxies in the same redshift range, we find that the morphology-density relation for galaxies more massive than 0.5M* has remained constant since at least z~0.8. This implies that galaxies evolve in mass, morphology and density such that the morphology-density relation does not change. In particular, the decline of star formation activity and the accompanying increase in the stellar mass density of red galaxies since z~1 must happen without large changes in the early-type galaxy fraction in a given environment.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables.     Towards a better understanding aquatic carbon losses from lowland peatlands across England and Wales

    Hydrological fluxes in lowland peatlands can be challenging to measure but they drive poorly understood aquatic carbon fluxes which may form an important part of the overall carbon budget for peatlands. In this study we examined 11 lowland peatland sites across some of the most important fen and raised bog complexes in England and Wales including agricultural peatlands, mining sites and restoration sites. These were intensively monitored between January 2013 and December 2015. The monitoring included continual hydrological measurements and regular sampling for dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC), particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. These data were used to calculate the amount of water flowing out of each site and the total aquatic carbon loss. In addition, the hydrological data were used to provide contextual data to explain carbon flux variations between sites and help explain and model variations in gaseous carbon fluxes. The hydrology of all these lowland peat sites is typically complex with most having been drained, which when combined with their relatively flat gradients results in most having no clear single outlet. In addition the drainage networks are often used to not only drain water during periods of excess rainfall but also to maintain raised water tables during summer months when rainfall totals are low. As a result, aquatic losses were determined using a mixture of water mass balance approaches (e.g. using flux tower evapotranspiration data) and groundwater flow monitoring. The hydrology of the 11 sites was found to vary considerably, even between co-located sites, however as might be expected given the west-east rainfall gradient observed in the UK, discharge was typically highest at the Anglesey Fens sites (western Wales) and lowest at the East Anglian Fens sites (eastern England). One influence on the observed differences in discharge was the impact of vegetation type on evapotranspiration rates, with sites with high ET having some of the lowest discharge. Compared to gaseous fluxes, aquatic carbon fluxes made a smaller but significant contribution to overall rates of carbon loss, with the ‘reactive’ aquatic C flux accounting for 2-26% of NEE. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) made the largest contribution. Concentrations of DOC were generally high, with all sites having mean concentrations greater than 20 mg L-1. DOC fluxes ranged from just 4 g C m-2 yr-1 up to 67 g C m-2 yr-1 being more variable than concentrations due to the wide variation in discharge from the different sites.     Law, Market Building and Public Health in the European Union

    European Union (EU) law is based upon a liberalising imperative, the goal of which is to construct a single market between member states. Yet the EU is no ordinary trade pact, incorporating as it does a range of supranational political institutions and common policies in a range of areas beyond simple market building. Scholars have nevertheless noted a distinction between ‘positive’ integration (the formulation of common policies applying to all member states) and ‘negative’ integration (the removal of national-level regulations acting as barriers to market integration). In the context of debates about the implications of trade law and corporate activity for health, this article poses three related questions. First, to what extent does EU law afford corporations opportunities to challenge national-level health regulations? Second, to what extent do EU legal and political processes provide opportunities for positive pro-health supranational regulation, including that which might offset the effects of negative liberalising integration? Third, how do EU market-building processes differ from those of more narrowly-drawn trade agreements and organisations in their implications for health? We analyse and compare two recent sets of health-related legal proceedings under EU law, the first of which challenges legislation passed by the Scottish Government to introduce minimum unit pricing for alcohol, and the second of which addresses the legality of specific aspects of the EU’s 2014 Tobacco Products Directive. We find, first, that EU law offers ample opportunities for corporations to challenge national health regulations; second, that there is significant scope for pro-health supranational regulations, but that these must be couched in the language of facilitating the single market, and are dependent on the political commitment of key policy actors; and, third, that this (limited) scope for pro-health supranational regulation distinguishes EU legal and political processes from those of other trade agreements and organisations
