A method for predicting interfacial freezing of a liquid flowing over a cold surface
Instantaneous thickness of a frozen layer is a function of specific heat, heat of fusion, temperatures, the frozen layer thickness at equilibrium, the thermal conductivity, and heat transfer coefficient. The equation can be evaluated on a desk calculator
Capital Gains Realizations of the Rich and Sophisticated
This paper attempts to bring theoretical and empirical research on capital gains realization behavior closer together by considering whether investors who appear to engage more in strategic tax avoidance activity also respond differently to tax rates. We find that such investors exhibit significantly smaller responses to permanent tax rate changes than other investors. Put another way, a larger part of their response to capital gains tax rates reflects timing, consistent with their closer adherence to tax avoidance strategies emphasizing arbitrage based on tax rate differentials. This finding holds for two alternative specifications of realization behavior, one of which suggests larger permanent responses to capital gains tax rates than those of previous panel studies.
Subcritical Superstrings
We introduce the Liouville mode into the Green-Schwarz superstring. Like
massive supersymmetry without central charges, there is no kappa symmetry.
However, the second-class constraints (and corresponding Wess-Zumino term)
remain, and can be solved by (twisted) chiral superspace in dimensions D=4 and
6. The matter conformal anomaly is c = 4-D < 1. It thus can be canceled for
physical dimensions by the usual Liouville methods, unlike the bosonic string
(for which the consistency condition is c = D <= 1).Comment: 9 pg., compressed postscript file (.ps.Z), other formats (.dvi, .ps,

Social uncertainty is heterogeneous and sometimes valuable
To win friends, help the needy, avoid exploitation or influence strangers, people must make decisions that are inherently uncertain. In their compelling and insightful perspective on resolving social uncertainty1, FeldmanHall and Shenhav (henceforth F&S) join a growing movement combining computational approaches with social psychological theory. F&S identify a range of negative and positive aspects of social uncertainty. Here we offer additional ways to think about social uncertainty and suggest potential avenues for future research
Green-Schwarz Formulation of Self-Dual Superstring
The self-dual superstring has been described previously in a
Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond formulation with local N=2 or 4 world-sheet supersymmetry.
We present a Green-Schwarz-type formulation, with manifest spacetime
supersymmetry.Comment: 11 pg., (uuencoded dvi file) ITP-SB-92-5
Direct current superconducting quantum interferometers with asymmetric shunt resistors
We have investigated asymmetrically shunted Nb/Al-AlO/Nb direct current
(dc) superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). While keeping the
total resistance identical to a comparable symmetric SQUID with , we shunted only one of the two Josephson junctions with
. Simulations predict that the optimum energy resolution
and thus also the noise performance of such an asymmetric SQUID can
be 3--4 times better than that of its symmetric counterpart. Experiments at a
temperature of 4.2\,K yielded for an asymmetric
SQUID with an inductance of . For a comparable symmetric device
was achieved, confirming our simulation results.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Linear Self-Motion Cues Support the Spatial Distribution and Stability of Hippocampal Place Cells
The vestibular system provides a crucial component of place-cell and head-direction cell activity [1-7]. Otolith signals are necessary for head-direction signal stability and associated behavior [8, 9], and the head-direction signal's contribution to parahippocampal spatial representations [10-14] suggests that place cells may also require otolithic information. Here, we demonstrate that self-movement information from the otolith organs is necessary for the development of stable place fields within and across sessions. Place cells in otoconia-deficient tilted mice showed reduced spatial coherence and formed place fields that were located closer to environmental boundaries, relative to those of control mice. These differences reveal an important otolithic contribution to place-cell functioning and provide insight into the cognitive deficits associated with otolith dysfunction
The N=2(4) string is self-dual N=4 Yang-Mills
N=2 string amplitudes, when required to have the Lorentz covariance of the
equivalent N=4 string, describe a self-dual form of N=4 super Yang-Mills in 2+2
dimensions. Spin-independent couplings and the ghost nature of SO(2,2)
spacetime make it a topological-like theory with vanishing loop corrections.Comment: 7 pg., ITP-SB-92-24 (uuencoded dvi file; otherwise same as original
