    A New Kind of Production Multiplier for Assessing the Scale and Structure Effects of Demand Shocks in Input-Output Frameworks

    The main purpose of this paper is to develop a new kind of input-output multiplier that would be particularly well suited to quantifying the impacts of final demand changes on the sectoral output growth potential of an economy. Instead of using the traditional output multipliers, solving an appropriate optimization problem provides what can be called input-output Euclidean distance multipliers. This method does not impose unitary final demand shocks with a fixed (predetermined) structure, allowing the “IO economy” to change across the spectrum of all possible structures. It can be very helpful in measuring interindustry linkages and key sectors in a national or regional economy.     Economic complexity can be defined as the level of interdependence between the component parts of an economy. In input-output systems, intersectoral connectedness is a crucial feature of analysis, and there are many different methods for measuring it. Most of the measures, however, have drawbacks that prevent them from being used as a good indicator of economic complexity, because they were not explicitly made with this purpose in mind.     Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome: Pre-and Post-Surgical MRI and US Findings

    Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) is a rare congenital anomaly of the female urogenital tract that associates Müllerian duct anomalies with mesonephric duct anomalies. The triad of uterus didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis characterizes this syndrome. Patients generally present with non-specific symptoms after menarche. Pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and palpable mass due to hematocolpos or hematometra are the most common findings. Pyohematocolpos and pyosalpinx may appear as acute complications, while endometriosis and pelvic adhesions constitute potential long-term complications. When a prenatal diagnosis of unilateral renal agenesis in newborn girls is known, a gynecological imaging study should be performed to exclude uterine and vaginal abnormalities. These patients should be followed up to ensure that a timely surgical correction is performed. The diagnosis of HWWS is difficult due to the lack of specific symptoms or findings upon physical examination. An accurate imaging description of these congenital anomalies is crucial to guide patients toward surgical treatment, relieving acute complications, and preserving the normal fertility.     Calibration and validation of hydrodynamic, salt and heat transport models for Ria de Aveiro lagoon (Portugal)

    Ria deAveiro is a very complex shallow water coastal lagoon located on the northwest of Portugal. Important issues would be left unanswered without a good understanding of hydrodynamic and transport processes occurring in the lagoon. Calibration and validation of hydrodynamic, salt and heat transport models for Ria de Aveiro lagoon are presented. The calibration of the hydrodynamic model was performed adjusting the bottom friction coefficient, through the comparison between measured and predicted time series of sea surface elevation for 22 stations. Harmonic analysis was performed in order to evaluate the model's accuracy. To validate the hydrodynamic model measured and predicted SSE values were compared for 11 stations, as well as main flow direction velocities for 10 stations. The salt and heat transport models were calibrated comparing measured and predicted time series of salinity and water temperature for 7 stations, and the RMS of the difference between the series was determined. These models were validated comparing the model results with an independent field data set. The hydrodynamic and the salt and heat transport models for Ria de Aveiro were successfully calibrated and validated. They reproduce accurately the barotropic flows and can therefore adequately represent the salt and heat transport and the heat transfer processes occurring in Ria deAveiro

    IgG4 related disease (IgG4 RD) is a newly recognized entity that includes a group of immune-mediated fibro-inflammatory conditions. It can affect a wide range of organs, producing a broad spectrum of presentations. The selection of imaging modality is based on patient symptoms and the organs under evaluation. The diagnosis is based on a combination of radiological findings, serum IgG4 elevation levels, histopathological features, association with other IgG4-related diseases and response to steroids. We report a rare case of an IgG4-related sclerosing mesenteritis in a man who presented with an incidental right lower quadrant mesenteric mass and was unsuccessfully treated with corticoids.     Prostate cancer is the fourth most common cancer and the eight cause of death by cancer worldwide. In particularly, anterior prostate cancers are frequently missed since they can be neither palpable nor tangible on physical examination. Furthermore, traditional TRUS-guided prostate biopsy accomplishes poorly in their diagnosis because anterior prostate cancers, including anterior fibromuscular stroma cancers, are not normally sampled. Consequently, these tumors are often diagnosed after recurrent negative biopsies, being larger at diagnosis, carrying a higher risk for the patient. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the importance of multi-parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging in diagnosis of anterior fibromuscular cancers, describing the normal zonal anatomy and the typical tumors behave patterns at this location. In conclusion, MRI should perform a significant role in more precise lesion localization, particularly in the diagnosis of anterior prostate cancer. Prebiopsy MRI with an ADC map should be performed to avoid missing clinically significant cancer in the anterior gland, a problem inherent in the use of TRUS-guided biopsy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Multidimensional continued fractions, dynamical renormalization and KAM theory

    The disadvantage of `traditional' multidimensional continued fraction algorithms is that it is not known whether they provide simultaneous rational approximations for generic vectors. Following ideas of Dani, Lagarias and Kleinbock-Margulis we describe a simple algorithm based on the dynamics of flows on the homogeneous space SL(2,Z)\SL(2,R) (the space of lattices of covolume one) that indeed yields best possible approximations to any irrational vector. The algorithm is ideally suited for a number of dynamical applications that involve small divisor problems. We explicitely construct renormalization schemes for (a) the linearization of vector fields on tori of arbitrary dimension and (b) the construction of invariant tori for Hamiltonian systems.Comment: 51 page

    Applying ISO/IEC 25010 standard to prioritize and solve quality issues of automatic ETL processes

    The goal of any automatic process is to run without human intervention. However, it is not uncommon that unexpected issues recur, requiring repetitive human intervention in order to processes execute successfully. Such situations indicate that those processes were not designed with the necessary quality requirements to achieve the automation goal, and quality needs to be improved. This paper describes a case study of the quality improvements of several automatic ETL processes that required a growing amount of effort to ensure its successful execution. Key to the improvement process was the use of the ISO/IEC 25010 Standard for Systems and Software Quality Requirements and Evaluation to categorize all issues found. This approach proved beneficial in two important ways: first, it created a clear understanding of the overall ETL processes quality problems, second, it made obvious which issues deserved uttermost attention.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
